I teach history for Houston Community College. Among my various breads and butters is the US survey: US history from pre-contact to 1877 and 1877 to the present. We use a textbook, a reader (essays, articles, and primary source documents) and a monograph or two. In 2006 I was faced with using a $100 reader. I was concerned if the student population could be able to afford the book (in addition to the textbook and monographs). Especially knowing (fearing) that the entire book will not be used by my colleagues nor read by students. So, I was given the green …

Libraries Faculty and Staff Presentations
Article 1 of the US Constitution assigns the US Congress numerous responsibilities. These include creating new laws, revising existing laws, funding government programs, and conducting oversight of these programs' performance. Oversight of US Government agency space policy programs is executed by various congressional space policy committees including the House and Senate Science Committees, Armed Services, and Appropriations Committees. These committees conduct many public hearings on space policy, which invite expert witnesses to testify on US space policy programs and feature debate on the strengths and weaknesses of these programs. Documentation produced by these committees is widely available to the public, …

In Review: Effective Difficult Conversations: A Step-By-Step Guide, M. Anne O'Reilly
Urban Library Journal
Having difficult conversations is, well ... difficult, but Catherine B. Soehner and Ann Darling make it a bit easier in their book, Effective Difficult Conversations: A Step-by-Step Guide. This text by ALA Editions does not claim to be a self-help book; rather it aims to “bring something new to the discussion while focusing on having ‘difficult’ conversations in your professional life” (p. xii). The authors give examples of difficult conversations: those dealing with hiring and promotion, performance, tasks that need to be done, and tasks or behaviors that may need to stop. They define which types of difficult conversations …

Validation Theory And Culturally Relevant Curriculum In The Information Literacy Classroom, Torie L. Quiñonez, Antonia P. Olivas
Urban Library Journal
In four separate undergraduate information literacy classes where students predominantly identified as Latinx, two instruction library faculty revamped the standard information literacy curriculum to emphasize Latinx scholarship. They affirmed student life experience as authority in order to understand how validation theory affects the student scholar identity of first year Latinx college students from a large metropolitan area in the U.S.-Mexico border region. The two librarians who designed and team-taught these information literacy sessions are also both Latinx and come from urban borderlands backgrounds. Both identify as first-generation college students and one identifies as having a mixed status family background.

This article will describe a process at the University of Kentucky Libraries for utilizing an unlimited Google Drive for Education account for digital library object storage. For a number of recent digital library projects, we have used Google Drive for both archival file storage and web derivative file storage. As a part of the process, a Google Drive API script is deployed in order to automate the gathering of of Google Drive object identifiers. Also, a custom Omeka plugin was developed to allow for referencing web deliverable files within a web publishing platform via object linking and embedding.

User Experience As A Rhetorical Medium: User At The Intersection Of Audience, Reader And Actor, Áine Doyle
English Honors Theses
The goal of this project is to demonstrate how digital interfaces are bodies of visual language that can be “close-read” and interpreted critically, just like any other traditional text; digital user interfaces, like poetry and novels, have form and content that complement and shape the meaning and interpretation of the other. It is meant to encourage academic discussions about digital interfaces to go beyond whether social media is “good” or “bad” to how digital interfaces are structured, why they are structured the way they are, and what effects these structures have on the way they communicate information and content to …

Google Scholar Versions: Errors And Implications, Daniel S. Dotson
Google Scholar Versions: Errors And Implications, Daniel S. Dotson
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Google Scholar combines versions of what should be the same item into a single record with multiple versions listed and a common citation rate for all versions. However, these versions are not always the same document. A study on the citations of theses and dissertations found unusually high citation rates for some titles. On closer examination, these titles had versions that were other formats, sometimes with additional authors. A close examination of highly cited theses and dissertations revealed that nearly half of the titles were considered versions of other different formats, often much shorter and sometimes multi-authored journal articles.

Automating 35mm Photographic Film Digitization: X-Y Table Capture System Design And Assessment, Michael J. Bennett
Published Works
35mm still image formats are some of the most abundant photographic film types in cultural heritage collections. However, their special handling needs coupled with high resolution digital capture requirements have traditionally posed logistical constraints with regard to the formats’ digitization at scale. Through the use of a programmable X-Y table camera capture system, both slide and strip 35mm photographic film can be digitized in an automated fashion following Federal Agencies Digitization Guidelines (FADGI).

Academic Librarian Perceptions Of Academic Librarians: Building A Foundation Of Shared Understanding, Jody Fagan, Hillary Ostermiller, Elizabeth Price, Lara Sapp
Libraries
A survey concerning perceptions of academic librarians was conducted at a large, 4-year university with three populations: librarians, faculty, and undergraduate students. The high response rate and the use of an instrument based on previous studies offers the possibility of longitudinal comparison and the identification of relationships between groups within one environment. This article focuses specifically on academic librarian perceptions about what librarians know (expertise and skills), what librarians do (role and duties), and what librarians are like (motivations and affective behaviours). Twenty librarians employed in James Madison University Libraries responded to an online survey (62.5% response rate); four follow-up …

Sifting And Four-Moving Online: Opportunities And Challenges With Teaching Lateral Reading Through An Online Module (Conference Presentation), Andrea Baer, Daniel G. Kipnis
Libraries Scholarship
As the ways in which information gets produced and distributed online have substantially changed, librarians’ approaches to teaching source evaluation are also evolving. Many librarians are pointing out the limitations of formulaic approaches to source evaluation (e.g., checklists like CRAAP and RADCAB), given how source evaluation has become increasingly challenging in online environments. Research on “lateral reading” from the Stanford History Education Group (SHEG) and from Mike Caulfield has informed much of this work. In a 2016 study SHEG found that professional fact-checkers who practice “lateral reading” - spending little time on a website and more time reading what other …

Who doesn’t love the Internet Archive? As one of the longest running vehicles for capturing content generated online, it also serves as one of the primary databases for Public Domain and Creative Commons licensed media. Founded in 1996, the vast archive includes more than 430 billion web pages, but the fun doesn’t stop with the web. As a non-profit library, it also presents a broad spectrum of collections, from live audio to feature films, ebooks to software, and even patents and other government documents. In this post I wanted to share some favorites from the archive I’ve enjoyed recently, …
