Build Your Resume And Leave An Impact: Publish In The Cupola, Hana Huskic
Student Publications
The Cupola actively serves as a resistance to the academic publishing system that makes knowledge exclusive to the wealthy and privileged who have the ability to access it. Instead of keeping scholarship “behind the paywall” with high subscription costs, The Cupola and the other open repositories keep the knowledge freely accessible to everyone at any time, anywhere in the world. The Cupola has only existed since April 2012, but we have already reached 1 million downloads (...) To find out more about how The Cupola is perceived on the campus and how to make more students interested in student nominations, …

Work In Progress: A Meta-Literature Review Of Moral Foundations Theory As Applied In Game Studies, Sarah E. Hodge, Nicholas D. Bowman, Sven Jockel, Alyssa Wright
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
This paper outlines an in-progress systematic review of extant research in game studies that has incorporated Moral Foundations Theory (MFT), or relevant extensions of that theory to media entertainment, such as the Moral Intuition and Media Entertainment/Model of Intuitive Morality and Exemplars (MIME). Due to the interdisciplinary nature of these theoretical perspectives as well as game studies broadly, systematic review is critical to helping us collectively understand and collate the research in this area. The systematic review is done in two parts, one as a deep description of the characteristics of included studies, and one as a statistical analysis (as …

Environmental Laws And Restrains Of Criminal Sanctions In India, Annapurna Pattnaik, Sabyasachi Das, Banalata Pradhan
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The Issue Protection of environment has become one of the major global issues in 21st century. Man's conquest over the nature and his capacity to manipulate his environment through scientific and technological accomplishment has made him callous not only toward himself but towards other living creatures, plants, living organisms and macro-organisms. The technological advancement and economic developments have brought comforts to many, but unfavourable to our ecosystem in many ways. There are different kind of pollutions such as Water pollution, Air Pollution, Environmental pollution, Soil pollution, Oceanic pollution, food pollution, fossil fuel pollution etc. Many contaminations mixed in solid …

2019 Symposium on Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Purdue University Libraries and School of Information Studies, like many other libraries and archives, collects, preserves, and provides access to dissertations as original works of student scholarship in conjunction with degrees awarded by the University. The processes of collecting and preserving student scholarship becomes difficult as new ETD models and formats force existing workflows and platforms to adapt. This talk will identify emerging preservation and long-term access challenges associated with new forms of scholarship and will borrow from the digital preservation field to identify innovative and collaborative approaches for addressing these challenges.

2019 Symposium on Electronic Theses and Dissertations
It started with a question: how would we collect a museum exhibit, a blog, or a borne-digital dissertation? Three years later, the University of Iowa Graduate College and University Libraries collaborated to organize a regional meeting on the future of the dissertation and applied lessons from three fine arts, non-monograph, thesis pilots to ingest our first borne-digital dissertation. Insights will be shared from these experiences as well as advancements in our thesis and dissertation policies and practices.

Purdue Graduate School Thesis And Dissertation Policy Changes: Giant Leaps Forward, James L. Mohler, Ashlee Messersmith
2019 Symposium on Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Inspired by the University of Iowa’s Beyond the PDF event last year, the Purdue Graduate School evaluated their policies pertaining to theses and dissertations. The evaluation concluded last summer and found that existing policies were unclear regarding acceptable types of theses, in particular, requiring submission in the PDF format. As students continue to utilize emerging technologies and publish journal articles to supplement their research, policies were rewritten to include non-traditional formats and types of theses. The challenges, motivations, and inspirations for the new policies will be shared as well as early indications of their impacts.

The Doctoral Dissertation: Observations, Perspectives, Protean Nature?, Jean-Pierre Herubel
2019 Symposium on Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Dissertations represent different doctoral cultures as well as artifacts of research achievement. Beyond general contours identifiable as contribution to knowledge, the dissertation is as much symbol as acculturation within disciplinary cultures. Each dissertation represents training, discovery, unique contribution, as well as the acculturative properties inherent to the dissertation’s liminal process and raison d'être. This exploratory presentation challenges us to consider what the dissertation is and how it may vary in purpose and form.

A 2013 study found that 70% of URLs in law journal articles and 50% of URLs cited by U.S. Supreme Court cases had suffered from reference rot and additional studies have demonstrated that reference rot increases over time. Information published online by government agencies is not immune to this phenomena. One startling example is the removal of climate change information from the Environmental Protection Agency's website. Perma.cc is a service developed by the Harvard Innovation Lab to preserve web-based content cited by scholars and the courts. Unlike archiving techniques that rely on random captures of web content, Perma.cc creates a …

Adventures In Rightsizing : Enhancing Discovery And Research With Open Access Journals In The University Library, Barbara M. Pope
Faculty Submissions
Academic libraries have long had print journals to support the university’s discovery and research needs. However, academic libraries are challenged with needs for relevant content, cost control, and space availability, and some have downsized their print journal collections as a result. Many academic libraries are replacing or supplementing print journal subscriptions with online subscriptions and open access journals. Pittsburg State University’s (PSU) Axe Library faces the challenge of providing access to print and online journals in order to support the university’s needs and stay on budget. To that end, PSU began rightsizing its print journal collection in 2016. In 2017, …
