While there have been efforts to increase diversity programming in LIS, there is still progress to be made in highlighting the voices and research interests of marginalized identities. In Summer 2018, the William H. Hannon Library at LMU held its first People of Color in Library and Information Science (POC in LIS) Summit to create a brave space for POC narratives and support research interests. In this workshop, the presenters will discuss the summit as a leadership opportunity to create a POC space in LIS. The presenters will: 1) examine issues of inequity in conference organization in order to apply …

The research surveyed computer self-efficacy as determinants to the use of online public access catalogue. Based on a detailed literature review, a total of three research questions were raised: What are the available access points for the use of OPAC by the library users? What are the various search methods/technique used by users to locate needed materials through the OPAC? And what is the level of the user’s computer self-efficacy? The study adopted the descriptive survey design. The population of the study is made up of 18,332 registered under -graduate library users and the sampling size of 920. The findings …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Cloud computing is a service through which we access in a remote application server and consume computing services through the internet. This modification of cloud computing has been quite popular since the last decade in enabling computing. Cloud computing plays a key role in the development of Modern Library. Modern libraries are being rejuvenated rapidly through cloud computing. The Bibliometric study of the publication on cloud computing has been done in the research paper presented. Web of Science Core collection database has been used for data collection. Total 11776 articles were retrieved on Cloud Computing through Web of Science database. …

A Ulysses Pact With Artificial Systems. How To Deliberately Change The Objective Spirit With Cultured Ai, Bruno Gransche
A Ulysses Pact With Artificial Systems. How To Deliberately Change The Objective Spirit With Cultured Ai, Bruno Gransche
Computer Ethics - Philosophical Enquiry (CEPE) Proceedings
The article introduces a concept of cultured technology, i.e. intelligent systems capable of interacting with humans and showing (or simulating) manners, of following customs and of socio-sensitive considerations. Such technologies might, when deployed on a large scale, influence and change the realm of human customs, traditions, standards of acceptable behavior, etc. This realm is known as the "objective spirit" (Hegel), which usually is thought of as being historically changing but not subject to deliberate human design. The article investigates the question of whether the purposeful design of interactive technologies (as cultured technologies) could enable us to shape modes of …

Legal And Technical Issues For Text And Data Mining In Greece, Maria Kanellopoulou - Botti, Marinos Papadopoulos, Christos Zampakolas, Paraskevi Ganatsiou
Computer Ethics - Philosophical Enquiry (CEPE) Proceedings
Web harvesting and archiving pertains to the processes of collecting from the web and archiving of works that reside on the Web. Web harvesting and archiving is one of the most attractive applications for libraries which plan ahead for their future operation. When works retrieved from the Web are turned into archived and documented material to be found in a library, the amount of works that can be found in said library can be far greater than the number of works harvested from the Web. The proposed participation in the 2019 CEPE Conference aims at presenting certain issues related to …

Creating A Library Orientation Card Game To Reach New Transfer Students, Kelly Giles, Kristen S. Shuyler, Andrew Evans, Jon Reed
Libraries
Librarians and staff at a public university drew upon previous experience with instructional games to develop, implement, and assess a card game as a library orientation activity for new transfer students. This project was shaped by a desire to meet transfer students’ unique needs as well as the logistical constraints associated with the university’s transfer student orientation. The card game, modeled after Apples to Apples, presented information about the campus library system in a fun, informal way that allowed transfer students to socialize with each other while learning. Survey responses indicated that students found the game both enjoyable and …
Words And Worldviews: Decolonizing Description, F. Tim Knight
Words And Worldviews: Decolonizing Description, F. Tim Knight
Librarian Publications & Presentations
Recommendation #5 in the CFLA-FCAB Truth & Reconciliation Report advises that libraries address the “structural biases in existing schemes of knowledge organization and information retrieval arising from colonialism.” It suggests that one way to do this is by “integrating Indigenous epistemologies into cataloguing praxis and knowledge management.” This requires conversations and collaborations, learning and unlearning. In this panel, F. Tim Knight and Sharon Farnel will discuss their paths toward understanding the inherent differences that exist between Western and indigenous approaches to knowledge, and explore what decolonization means in the context of library resource description.
