Serving The Professional Graduate Student: Health Sciences, Julie Evener

Education Collection

Students pursuing graduate-level degrees for careers in the health sciences have specific, and sometimes unique, needs regarding library resources and information literacy (IL) skills and instruction. The key to these considerations are the principles of evidence-based practice (EBP) taught in health science curriculums. EBP, also known as evidence-based medicine or evidence-informed practice, is best defined as “the conscientious, explicit, and judicious use of current best evidence in making decisions about the care of individual patients.” The library can help both in providing resources that contain the current best evidence and in teaching graduate health sciences students how to find the …

Discussions of diversity in American librarianship usually focus on gender or ethnicity, but historical studies also show a lack of diversity in educational and disciplinary backgrounds. Librarians traditionally hail from the humanities, especially English and history. But as current educational attention shifts to science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields, are librarians reflecting this change? Anonymized data from ALA-accredited graduate programs from the last five years was collected, coded, and classified to determine librarians’ educational and disciplinary backgrounds and in what ways, if any, they differ from the past 65 years and from the contemporary U.S. general population. In Nebraska, little is known of the potential needs and perceived challenges related to stewarding digital materials in libraries, archives, and museums (LAMs)), many of which are operating in small communities with limited resources. This presentation outlines the preparation, design, and results of a questionnaire distributed to Nebraska-based LAMs to gain a better understanding of the current state of digital stewardship across Nebraska.

Background interview by Elaine Lasda and Kelsey O’Brien for the book: All That's Not Fit to Print: Fake News and the Call to Action for Librarians and Information Professionals, by Amy Affelt (2019) London: Emerald (ISBN: 9781789733648). This interview provides perspective from two academic librarians regarding the prevalence, spread and fight against fake news in America today. One librarian works primarily with undergraduates and sees this as part of a greater need for metaliteracy education. One librarian works primarily with graduate students and faculty, and has seen effect of fake news on those groups.

Using Virtual Reality In Medical Education To Teach Empathy, Elizabeth Dyer, Barbara Swartzlander, Marilyn R. Gugliucci

Objective: The project adopted technology that teaches medical and other health professions students to be empathetic with older adults, through virtual reality (VR) software that allows them to simulate being a patient with age-related diseases, and to familiarize medical students with information resources related to the health of older adults.

Methods: The project uses an application that creates immersive VR experiences for training of the workforce for aging services. Users experience age-related conditions such as macular degeneration and high-frequency hearing loss from the patient’s perspective. There are many avenues for researchers and practitioners working in higher education to become involved in the open education movement via their research (e.g., publishing in or editing open access (OA) journals), teaching (e.g., creating, adopting, or adapting open educational resources (OER) and/or engaging in open pedagogy and open educational practices), or service activities (e.g., serving on university, college, or departmental open education committees). However, the value assigned to these efforts by administrators in colleges and universities throughout the United States (US) is not always clear (Jhangiani, 2017). Increasing serials costs and shrinking budgets present challenges for academic libraries to continue providing sufficient access to scholarly articles. Rapid document delivery services can serve as an effective means to fill the gap caused by serials cancellations. This column examines several of the existing document delivery service providers and addresses issues involved in their implementation.

An important goal of the open access movement in scholarly publishing has been to broaden access to research globally. Electronic delivery and removing paywalls has allowed published, open access research to flow more readily across borders. Furthermore, although subscription publishing platforms continue to be maintained as they have been historically in the Global North (GN), new publishers, often located in the Global South (GS), have seen an opportunity to offer platforms of their own that publish in an open access environment.
