Last year, three MLIS students from the University of Washington partnered with Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada and helped to identify an information need for new refugees. Although local city information for refugees is freely available online, this delivery method is not beneficial to individuals with limited English language proficiency or low digital literacy. To bridge this gap, we created a resource guide for refugees located in Southern Nevada, which can be adapted by libraries and resettlement organizations across the country.

digitization - from selection, through preparation, digitization, object

Chronicling America is a nation-wide project supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Library of Congress to make historical newspapers available online and full text searchable. Nevada has participated in the project since 2014. Each grant cycle lasts two years and produces 100,000 digitized news pages for online access. Title selection is guided by an Advisory Board to represent each county of Nevada. These newspapers are the first draft of history, show the daily lives, perspectives, and events of the past. The current environment for electronic resource management, discovery, and access is a very complex system on the back end, with the goal of having a simple experience for users on the front end. One way to understand the ER environment is to look back to the beginnings and build the system from the ground up. The presenters will build an electronic resource environment from the basic components, simplifying the complexity, so that participants can better understand the relationship between the library services platform and integrated discovery system, and its implications for our researchers’ discovery experience.

In the United States, children are exposed to literally hundreds of thousands of television commercials a year and virtually every aspect of kids’ lives are replete with commercial messages. The negative effects of this exposure are well documented. Yet, there remains very little regulation or limit on advertising to children beyond that which exists for adults. Additionally, only about 1/3 of U.S. parents wish for stronger controls. This presents a challenge for media literacy scholars and practitioners. This short handout was distributed to the faculty members of Gettysburg College during the Friday Forum Presentation that took place during Open Access Week 2018. It was designed to bring awareness to the Open Access movement and its benefits, as well as to advertise the #GburgOAscore Quiz designed for faculty members to evaluate their engagement with Open Access.

Cataloging Research By Design: A Taxonomic Approach To Understanding Research Questions In Cataloging, Rachel Ivy Clarke

This paper asserts that many research questions (RQs) in cataloging reflect design-based RQs, rather than traditional scientific ones. To support this idea, a review of existing discussions of RQs is presented to identify prominent types of RQs, including design-based RQs. RQ types are then classified into a taxonomic framework and compared with RQs from the Everyday Cataloger Concerns project, which aimed to identify important areas of research from the perspective of practicing catalogers. This comparative method demonstrates the ways in which the research areas identified by cataloging practitioners reflect design RQs—and therefore require design approaches and methods to answer them.

Clemson Libraries have been using ILLiad for more than a decade. Upon recently hosting representatives from OCLC for eventual Tipasa migration, we learned that we currently use flags the way we will need to use tags in the future. As Tipasa will not offer an option for custom queues, which are a major part of our workflow, we will need to adapt tags for use in place of custom queues. This poster will outline our current plan for transforming our workflows after migration.

Identifying constituent needs regarding Open Educational Resources is a key part of the process when engaging with stakeholders. Input gathered is crucial to influencing OER initiatives at the state and local level--and taking informed next steps. One presenter, a consultant hired by the state of Colorado, conducted a statewide OER survey in order to gain the input from a variety of populations and provide a report to a state legislative committee. The other presenter, a Colorado academic librarian and SPARC Open Education Leadership Fellow, deployed OER surveys for students and faculty at their institution to help guide campus OER initiatives. …

Today, users of all backgrounds obtain a huge amount of information from Wikipedia. Attempting to increase the visibility of the Wayne State University Digital Collections, I introduced links to our Collections on relevant Wikipedia articles. Following an analysis of data obtained through Google Analytics, I discovered that traffic to our Digital Collections from Wikipedia had increased significantly.

Archives Exhibits

To honor Dr. Leon Lederman (15 July 1922-3 October 2018), a Nobel Laureate and former Director of Fermi Lab, and most importantly one of the founders of IMSA. After retiring as director of Fermi Lab, Dr. Lederman served as our resident scientist. In that capacity, he organized the Great Minds Program through which he invited scientists and other scholars to campus. Typically, the visitor would interact with students in the afternoon and then hold a more formal lecture in the evening, often open to the Aurora community.
