Phenotypes are used for a multitude of purposes such as defining species, reconstructing phylogenies, diagnosing diseases or improving crop and animal productivity, but most of this phenotypic data is published in free-text narratives that are not computable. This means that the complex relationship between the genome, the environment and phenotypes is largely inaccessible to analysis and important questions related to the evolution of organisms, their diseases or their response to climate change cannot be fully addressed. It takes great effort to manually convert free-text narratives to a computable format before they can be used in large-scale analyses. We argue that …

The Anchor: 2018

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Effective electronic resources management is comprised of ever evolving complex processes. One especially challenging component is to seamlessly ensure continuity of access and service to transferred journals, or journals that have changed publishers. The aspect that is particularly problematic throughout this process is the tracking of these changes. In the past at Rowan University Library, this process had not been monitored proactively. The concern today is to ensure that these changes are tracked so as to not interrupt the user’s research.

Academic liaison roles have seen massive changes over time and grown into an ever-broadening range of duties. What began as subject-focused collection involvement has evolved into a mix of instruction, reference, and various forms of course-embedded services, all while also retaining the earlier focus on subject-specific collection management. The mission of the Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP) is to provide free, permanent public access to federal government information now and for future generations. In the 20th century, depository libraries received tangible materials, in mostly print format, creating what is now often called the “legacy collection.” Currently the majority of government information is distributed in a born-digital format, sometimes with multiple avenues to online information through government agencies themselves and repositories collecting and digitizing materials. Scientometrics is an important field of information science as it represents a unique set of techniques and tools for the monitoring and analysis of information resources and for the management of knowledge in social and organizational contexts. This article analysed the various Scientometric components of the articles published by top six universities of Tamil Nadu from 2000-2017. The study identifies research trend, characteristics growth and collaboration pattern of published literature. The analysis of data reveals that the average growth rate increases at the rate of 9.76%. Further, the average citation per paper observed is 12.18%. High degree of international collaboration …

The Upstate Health Sciences Library, located in Syracuse, New York and serves Upstate Medical University and its surrounding communities. The Library is open 361 days a year, closing only for New Year’s Day, Independence Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day. The standard hours of operation are M-Th 7:30am to 12am; Fri 7:30am to 10pm; Sat 10am to 9pm; and Sun 10am to 12am with an average of 104 open hours per week. A case study is presented in order to prompt discussions of how to serve faculty who have fallen victim to predatory publishers. After learning of a field-specific predatory journal, a search of the publisher’s website revealed an institutional researcher had been included on the board of editors. After reaching out, the researcher confirmed that he was not legitimately associated with the journal, and asked for assistance in removing his name. I was unprepared to help him, and while an internet search provided information on how to approach removal, other questions surfaced. For example, how do we approach faculty with the …

This study assessed the effectiveness of one-shot library instruction sessions on knowledge acquisition and retention in Biology undergraduate students. In early Spring 2018 semester, the students enrolled in six sessions of Bio 112 at Adelphi University attended library instruction classes to learn about scientific literature. One-shot library instruction sessions were conducted to teach students in each section how to identify research, review and popular science magazine articles. A post-instruction test was conducted in late April and early May, 2018, to determine whether the students retained information from library instruction classes. The United States wastes approximately 133 billion pounds of food annually while 15 million American households are food insecure. Current and proposed U.S. legislation attempts to encourage food recovery efforts to address both of these problems by incentivizing donation of surplus foods by businesses to charitable organizations, yet legislation has failed to deliver. Food insecure individuals who use food banks or other safety net programs are often required to provide personal information and are subject to scrutiny in the process of acquiring food. Information can be leveraged in different ways to stigmatize or marginalize those in need. This presentation discusses …

Assessment of student learning has been a component of this instruction team’s workload, but the approach was narrow, and responsibility was not equally shared. The instruction assessment efforts were based on quiz results from online tutorials administered by certain team members. When the tutorial quiz scores remained consistent over time, the responsible librarians decided that it was no longer useful to conduct an annual tutorial assessment. With the support of the library assessment committee chair, instruction team members were asked to try their hands at assessment using techniques of their own choosing with a class that they selected. Weeding books is a scary prospect for many librarians and faculty, particularly for humanities faculty, since monographs are critical scholarship in those disciplines. At this library, a renovation in one area created the need for a large-scale review of monograph collections in other areas. Library leadership began conversations with campus stakeholders early on, emphasizing renovation needs and outcomes, careful deselection methods, stakeholder opportunities for input, and sustainable collections. In the Fall 2017 semester, all subject librarians began identifying relevant titles for deselection and communicating with departments about the process. Effective collaboration between archivists and technical services librarians can increase the discoverability of special collection materials. In this panel presentation, archivists and a technical services librarian from a medium-sized institution discussed archival tools available to preserve collections of digital content and how to make the collections available universitywide.

Working together, the panelists had created a plan to integrate these collections into the discovery layer so that metadata was indexed on a single user-friendly platform. After advertising the collections, they collected usage statistics to determine impact.

This presentation highlights the best practices for metadata, workflows, and exhibit-based storytelling using the hosted Omeka.net service. UNO Libraries Archives & Special Collections has created metadata best practices for the Dublin Core metadata in Omeka.net, including a guide for community partners who might be willing to create their own descriptive metadata. Upstate’s Department of Nursing adopted the Johns Hopkins Nursing Evidence -Based Practice (JHNEBP) Model as part of their journey toward Magnet recognition. To receive Magnet certification hospitals must have the infrastructure and resources to support the advancement of evidence-based practice (EBP) in all clinical settings. Nurses are expected to be able to speak the concept of EBP and cite examples of how they use evidence in their practice to achieve optimal patient outcomes.
