Making A Mark In The First Year: Initiating And Implementing Large-Scale Projects As A New Librarian, Teagan Eastman, Amber Willenborg

New librarians are in a position to bring innovative ideas to their organization, but are often unsure of how to go about implementing big projects. This article presents a case study of two online learning librarians in their first year of librarianship, outlining how they initiated and implemented large-scale projects and discussing challenges they faced and lessons they learned.

With shrinking print collections and the increase in automation, technical services departments are looking for new ways to utilize their skills. Digital humanities projects offer the opportunity for technical services departments to expand their workflows while using skills they already possess. This article details Bowling Green State University’s technical services department’s project to use the digital humanities to make World War I soldiers’ letters available online using the metadata schema, Text Encoding Initiative (TEI). By partnering with special collections and increasing staff focus on metadata, the department has created a new path forward that can be replicated at other institutions.

This article presents the results of a survey designed to benchmark the use of vendors to support authority control activities in Association of Research Libraries member libraries. Such activities include updating authority or bibliographic records, sourcing authority records, participation in cooperative cataloging efforts, and more. The survey investigated whether and how responding libraries used vendors to create and maintain an authority file and process current cataloging records. The survey gathered demographic and other information about the libraries, and the authors sought to identify trends and correlations between these and other factors.

In today’s fast-paced, data-driven world, researchers need to have a good foundation in informatics to store, organize, process, and analyze growing amounts of data. However, not all degree programs offer such training. Obtaining training in informatics on your own can be a daunting task for both new and established researchers who have little informatics experience. Providing educational opportunities appropriate for various skill levels and that mesh with a full-time schedule can remove barriers and foster a collaborative, informatics-savvy community that is better equipped to push science forward.

Elsevier, Bepress, And A Glimpse At The Future Of Scholarly Communication, Christine Ferguson

The acquisition of bepress by Elsevier in August 2017, while unpopular among many librarians, provides both companies opportunities for expansion and growth. This Balance Point column outlines some of the benefits to both companies and the reaction by the library community. Also addressed is the announcement by the Penn Libraries that they are searching for a new open source repository potentially to replace bepress’s Digital Commons. The column concludes with some discussion of Elsevier’s relationship with open access content and the impact of the acquisition on the scholarly communications infrastructure.

Out On The Shelves is Vancouver’s only Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Two-Spirit, Queer, Intersex, Aromantic/Asexual (LGBT2QIA+) library. Due to recent organizational changes, it has become apparent that its current classification system is no longer working effectively. Not only was the previous system unstructured and confusing, it failed to explicitly represent many aspects of the community it serves. This project was undertaken during the summer of 2018, researching alternative classification and queer issues in knowledge organization to determine how to improve it. The recent explosion of “fake news” highlights the need for academic libraries to provide access to reliable information resources and for librarians to instruct students in using them effectively. Providing reliable resources with minimal barriers to access involves cooperation between librarians, publishers and vendors. However, I suggest that there is tension between our mutual desire to satisfy student demands for instant and perfect results and encouraging them to become persistent and critical information seekers. What Do Chemists Cite? A Five-Year Analysis Of References Cited In American Chemical Society Journal Articles, Lisa Madeleine Rose-Wiles, Cecilia Marzabadi

This study analyzes references cited by articles published in ten American Chemical Society journals between 2011 and 2015. The median age of references was 6 years. On average, 44% of the references were five years old or younger, and only 11% were more than 20 years old. There appears to be a modest increase in references to older sources, possibly due to the increased availability of older articles online. References tended to be concentrated on a small core of journals. Overall, 20% of the journals cited accounted for 80% of the references. However, there was considerable variation among subdisciplines.

Serving Students: The Legacy of Milner’s Library

Many student-centered services valuable in previous libraries are no longer necessary. The “microcomputer lab” appeared in 1989 replacing the need for typewriters in the three typing rooms. The 58-cabinet card catalog was dismantled in 2002 when it became superfluous following the advent of the online catalog. Access to sources and assistance expanded dramatically in 1996 when the Library developed its first webpage. Milner Library was the first campus building to offer wireless access in 2004, allowing students to use or borrow laptops, tablets and other devices anywhere in the library.

And as we scale up to working with interdisciplinary teams, even the researchers on the team do not understand each others’ data. Epistemological barriers prevent researchers from good team science. Epistomological silos also provide a barrier to good grantwriting. Just as fashion trends change over time, so do our standards for finding aids. Recently, we revisited a number of our guides that have existed unchanged online for years and found that many have not aged well. Some finding aids were written by untrained staff or were created prior to the introduction of DACS. Others suffered from neglect in that they weren’t updated to reflect accruals to a collection or were not checked for grammar and spelling errors. It was time to take our finding aids from drab to fab, but how?

Himmelfarb Health Sciences Library was an early health sciences library adopter of web scale discovery with introduction of a customized instance of EBSCO’s Discovery Service (EDS) in 2012. After three years with EDS, the library initiated an evaluation project involving two user surveys and a library staff focus group to assess user satisfaction with the service. Resulting changes included introduction of widgets to improve access to clinical content, addition of radio buttons to the search box to make defaults easier to enable and disable, and a custom course reserves search feature. The improvements launched fall semester 2016.

This paper focuses upon the collection of works by Scottish printmaker James J. Guthrie (1874-1952) housed in the University of Kentucky Libraries Special Collections Research Center. The collection includes numerous prints, drawings, and book plates from the Pear Tree Press, the private press Guthrie operated in England from 1899 until his death. My research will in part analyze the influence of the Romantic period in Guthrie’s work, particularly that of William Blake, as well as the connection between Guthrie’s own creative autonomy and the Romantic movement’s notion of poetic genius. It will examine this revival of Romantic poetry in …

The library's mission is to provide students and faculty with access to various industries’ most innovative materials and products. Utilising Social Media To Improve Relationship Quality: The Case Of The University Library, Melissa N. Clark, Scott Bacon

As the centre of academic life at a university, the university library plays an important role in how students perceive their relationship with the university. This study analyses the effect that participation in library social media has on student perception of relationship quality with the university. The hypotheses proposed in this study were found to be substantiated: following the library on social media is positively related to a student's perception of their relationship quality with the university; students interested in multiple library services are likely to report the perception of a higher quality relationship with the university.

Serving Students: The Legacy of Milner’s Library

Since its unassuming beginnings, the library has grown to meet the changing needs of the University. The physical building has gradually expanded from its 160 square foot entryway to our current 224,000 square foot building. Over the years, the collection has grown in size and breadth to accommodate the transition from a teacher education institution into a multipurpose university with degree programs at the bachelor's, master's, and doctoral levels. To adjust to student demands, the Library’s hours of service have extended to include weekends and evenings.

Milner developed a library collection of varied formats to meet a variety of needs. She provided classroom instruction and reference assistance to help students make use of the collections but felt “…the pupils are best off when they learn how to help themselves." Under Milner’s helpful direction students used the collections and her services hand in hand to conduct their research.

Cook Hall was built in 1898 to serve the dual purposes of the gymnasium (as the building was referred to at the time) and the library. The library was a single room (49′×90′) located on the second floor above the gym.

This article describes a lesson plan that uses constructivist learning theory and the Information Creation as Process Frame. The lesson plan helps students identify and locate empirical journal articles in the field of psychology.

One of the most fruitful collaborative relationships a library can have is with its Friends of the Library organization, providing that group is vibrant and progressive. This article provides insight into the history of the Friends of the Library group at a regional comprehensive university since its founding in 1962 to nearly becoming defunct in 2015. The steps taken in the transformation of the Friends of the Library since then from an inactive group with no clear direction, to a robust organization with an active board who have identified goals and strategies for successful library advocacy are described.
