This research work was designed to examine the utilization of library resources by lecturers in University of Cape Coast. The objective of the study was to find out the level of availability of library materials in the university, and determine the extent of use of the materials by lecturers. It is also to find out factors that impede lecturer’s use of the library and make recommendations for improvement. A descriptive survey was used for the study. Jeffrey C. Hall, Michael Rosbash, and Michael W. Young are the 2017 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine Laureates, having earned the award for their “discoveries of molecular mechanisms controlling the circadian rhythm.” They identified the genes involved in the circadian rhythm mechanism and explained how all of the different pieces of the mechanism work together. These discoveries explain how the biological cycles of Earth’s organisms correspond to the rotation of the planet, acting as an inner clock. Their research also provides further opportunities to continue learning about the role of circadian rhythm and its relationship to human health (Nobelprize.org …

The Impact Of Library Tutorials On The Information Literacy Skills Of Occupational Therapy And Physical Therapy Students In An Evidence-Based Practice Course: A Rubric Assessment, April Schweikhard, Toni Hoberecht, Alyssa Peterson, Ken Randall

This study measures how online library instructional tutorials implemented into an evidence-based practice course have impacted the information literacy skills of occupational and physical therapy graduate students. Through a rubric assessment of final course papers, this study compares differences in students’ search strategies and cited sources pre- and post-implementation of the tutorials. The population includes 180 randomly selected graduate students from before and after the library tutorials were introduced into the course curriculum. Results indicate a statistically significant increase in components of students’ searching skills and ability to find higher levels of evidence after completing the library tutorials.

Libraries are uniquely positioned to support academic institutions that seek to reflect community values and respond to issues of diversity and inclusion. The transformation in higher education is occurring through the incorporation of high impact educational practices and libraries are ideally placed to play a key role in this transformation. High impact education practices increase student retention and engaged and include practices such as learning communities, first-year seminars, internships, and service learning. Service learning integrates credit-based educational experiences with service in the community, and provides students space to reflect on what they have learned. Students are sometimes asked to complete course assignments that are rich in media, such as videos, posters, or presentations. Sometimes they create their own original content by shooting and editing their own video scenes or photographs. More often, students will use existing digital assets--such images, video, and audio files--that were created by other people, and they repurpose those works to create their own new products. In order to create quality remixed media projects, students need to have some level of multimedia literacy. The Secret Lives Of Ebooks: A Paratextual Analysis Illuminates A Veil Of Usage Statistics, Jonathan H. Harwell, Erin Gallagher

This study applies the method of paratextual analysis to six electronic books, or ebooks, in an academic library collection at a small liberal arts college. Two books are selected from each of three platforms: ebrary, EBSCO, and SpringerLink. The characteristics of each book are described, including design and readership, as well as 2 years of usage statistics from the specific library, and altmetrics where available. The paratextual study leads to a closer investigation of the usage statistics themselves and concludes that despite industry standards, they are not calculated consistently across vendor platforms and that while these data are invisible …

Research universities have developed in symbiosis with a robust set of commercial providers that serve their needs. From food service providers to run dining halls to private equity firms to manage parts of the endowment, outsourcing has allowed universities to remain more focused on their core educational and research functions. But universities have also at times elected to outsource academic infrastructure. Commercial firms have developed a major role in several significant university functions, including scientific publishing, library management systems, and course management systems. December 7, 2016 marked the 75^th anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and the sinking of the USS Arizona. The University of Arizona Special Collections Library holds a large archive documenting the life of the ship and her crew. To commemorate this anniversary, Special Collections curated an exhibit highlighting materials from the collection and a complete refresh of an existing digital collection that was built in the mid 1990’s.

This case study describes the process L. Tom Perry Special Collections used to create and promote a digital collection of ephemera on Internet Archive. It follows the process from selection to uploading, discusses how decisions related to digitization were made, and how the collection was promoted following digitization. This paper establishes the value of digitizing ephemera related to topics known to be of interest to patrons and demonstrates one approach to special collections outreach. Since its introduction at HICSS-39, Informed Systems has evolved both through and as a process of organizational design for -˜learning in action.’ Fortified by Bruce’s informed learning theory and fostered by Checkland’s soft systems methodology, the approach is catalysed by participatory design, elaborated by action research, and expressed as information experience. The Luce Foundation Center of the Smithsonian American Art Museum ran a transmedia game, called PHEON, as an in-museum scavenger hunt-style game from October 2010 through September 2011. Players took on missions that sent them throughout the Museum's collections. From a summative evaluation of the game, we learned that PHEON supported problem solving skills, increased museum literacy, and help players connect with the Museum and its resources. Players also identified opportunities for improvement related to the game materials and its narrative. Evolution has been a paradox in the field of science, but, the study of evolutionary medicine applies both the evolutionary game theory and medicine. This study was conducted to explore evolution by analyzing two 19th century collections of medical formulations and prescriptions while compared to the trend of public health and pathogenic mechanisms. Analysis of organic structure in historical prescriptions, descriptive epidemiology in Kentucky, and the idea of the germ theory will be used explicitly to show the evolutionary change of health and disease.
