Public Libraries As Conduits For Indigenous Knowledge In South Africa, Maned Mhlongo, Patrick Ngulube Feb 2018

Public Libraries As Conduits For Indigenous Knowledge In South Africa, Maned Mhlongo, Patrick Ngulube

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The dearth of indigenous knowledge (IK) in libraries in general and in South Africa in particular is cause for concern as the situation can lead to its demise. Awareness of the usefulness of IK in various aspects of community life is well documented. It is imperative that public libraries, as gateways to information and knowledge should be at the forefront of facilitating access to all knowledge, including IK. The article explores how public libraries in South Africa can facilitate access to indigenous knowledge. Data for this multiple case study was collected through semi-structured interviews with directors of provincial library services. …

Manuscript Preparation Rules And Guidelines, February 2018 Feb 2018

Manuscript Preparation Rules And Guidelines, February 2018

Insecta Mundi

Insecta Mundi is an ongoing experiment in publishing. Our goal is to produce taxonomic publications that are free for authors (no page charges) and openly accessible for users (see Skelley and Thomas 2007). To accomplish this, we require the participation of authors in the publication process. Authors are required to make their manuscripts publishable by our standards prior to submission. Authors unwilling or unable to follow the guidelines should ask friends for help or consider paying to have their article published in journals which charge for the services.

The purposes for these rules and guidelines are to ensure consistency in …

Culture Shift: Facilitating Institutional Culture Change To Boost The Adoption, Use, And Sharing Of Oers, Stephanie Walker

Librarian Posters and Presentations

In 2015, the University of North Dakota (UND) had no institutional program to promote adoption, creation, or utilization of Open Educational Resources (OERs). That September, UND’s new Dean of Library & Information Resources was given a mandate to advocate for OERs. Initial campus climate was resistant; a respected senior faculty member gave a speech in opposition to OERs at the University Senate, claiming OERs infringed on academic freedom. In 2 years, we’ve achieved a major cultural shift. UND has become a state leader in OERs. We are on our 4th round of funding for faculty stipends, workshops, and support for …

Use Of Research By Librarians And Information Professionals, Hamid R. Jamali

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The study’s aim is twofold: first to determine the extent to which Australian library and information professionals produce research literature (specifically journal articles); and second to explore the status of the use of research literature by library and information science (LIS) practitioners as evidence for their practice. Out of 152 articles published in 2015 by Australian authors, 37 articles (20.3%) were authored by at least one practitioner, 29 articles (15.9%) were fully authored by practitioners, and eight …

What Usc Upstate Alumni Say About Information Literacy In The Workplace, Andrew Kearns

The Southeastern Librarian

Librarians have rightly focused their efforts on helping students acquire the information literacy skills needed to complete academic research while in college, but what comes after? While the way we teach information literacy may be a good preparation for those students going on to graduate school, many of us teach in institutions where a majority of our students will be heading directly to the workplace after they graduate. What information literacy skills are most important in the workplace? What are the differences or similarities in the process of finding and using information? What can librarians do to help prepare these …
