Patterns, Collaboration, Practice: Algorithms As Editing For Historic Periodicals, Elizabeth Lorang

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Presentations

This presentation positions my recent work on the algorithmic “discovery” of poetic material in historic newspapers within the contexts of my various roles as an editor of periodical literature and also consider how duplicative processes and algorithms encode principles and values and function as editorial acts. Ultimately, I hope to pose a range of questions to prompt discussion around the place (or not) of machine learning in identifying and selecting texts and bodies of work; what ideas we’re actually exploring/are able to explore when we enlist technology in stages of this work; and the stakes of these activities, whether human …

The 'Missing' Link: A Collaborative Effort To Improve The Accuracy Of Our Holdings, Angelina Brown, Kelly Hayden

TCLC Program Proceedings

Campbell Library, the Glassboro Campus branch of Rowan University Libraries houses a physical collection of over 300,000 books and DVDs. Two years ago, Campbell Library conducted the first inventory of this collection in almost two decades. This inventory uncovered approximately 8500 missing items. This discovery lead us to ask the questions: What is our policy on missing items? How long should missing items remain in the catalog? Should missing items be viewable in the OPAC? Can these items be replaced? It was quickly realized that there was no guidance or past policy in regards to reconciling missing items in the …

"Forming" A Collaborative Resolution To Ezproxy Host Errors, Lauren Gibbs Apr 2018

"Forming" A Collaborative Resolution To Ezproxy Host Errors, Lauren Gibbs

TCLC Program Proceedings

When a library user finds an electronic resource that is not properly configured for access through Ezproxy, an error message states that a host error has occurred. This error message, full of text and technical jargon, can be confusing to users. The page also does not give users an easy option to report the problem or a way to navigate back to where they started. As a result, Electronic Resources staff at Rowan University rarely received notifications of host errors from users. In order to improve user experience and correct host errors, a Google Form was created and customized to …

Librarians As Partner Teachers: Rewards And Challenges, Jen Hasse, Ellie Knickman Apr 2018

Librarians As Partner Teachers: Rewards And Challenges, Jen Hasse, Ellie Knickman

TCLC Program Proceedings

After a long period of exploration, in 2015, Cabrini University added an information literacy component to its freshman seminar, Engagements with the Common Good (ECG). Librarians teach 25% of the course. Class content mirrors the progress of the course topic, which varies by professor. This requires that the librarian go beyond the traditional supportive role of providing students with skills necessary to complete course assignments, and make significant contributions to the teaching and learning of course topics and themes.

Overall response to the component is favorable, but librarians note challenges that impact the quality of the course. Currently four librarians …

Disseminating Open Scientific Communication In Psychology: An Overview Of Platforms And Policies, Kristen Hoffman

SPU Works

In August 2017, APA announced a collaboration with the Center for Open Science to host data and preprints on PsyArXiv. APA journals and those of many other publishers allow posting prepublication manuscripts on the internet. More and more, scholars are pushing against the closed systems of publishing in favor of opening access, narrowly in regards to scholarly publications and more broadly in terms of the entire life cycle of research. When I talk with faculty at my institution, the two general responses I receive to the question, “What does open access look like in your discipline?” is either that it …

Research Models, Primo, & The First Year Experience, Kimberly Willson-St. Clair Apr 2018

Research Models, Primo, & The First Year Experience, Kimberly Willson-St. Clair

Library Faculty and Staff Publications and Presentations

Research can be daunting for freshman who are challenged to gather scholarly information beyond Google for their research projects. By blending two research models, ASE (Analyze, Search, Evaluate) with BEAM (Background, Exhibit, Argument, and Method), students can think critically about their topics and strategically search PRIMO [Library catalog] for relevant results. This approach addresses several ACRL Framework threshold concepts, especially research as strategic exploration and scholarship as conversation. This presentation shows how effective Primo can be for first year experience students in regards to discovering relevant scholarly resources, and discovering other pertinent, authoritative resources.

Iterative Design Of A Simulation-Based Module For Teaching Evolution By Natural Selection, Jody Clarke-Midura, Denise S. Pope, Susan Maruca, Joel K. Abraham, Eli Meir

Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications

Background: This research builds on a previous study that looked at the effectiveness of a simulation-based module for teaching students about the process of evolution by natural selection. While the previous study showed that the module was successful in teaching how natural selection works, the research uncovered some weaknesses in the design. In this paper, we used design-based research to investigate how design changes to the module affected not only students’ understanding of the concepts but also their usage of misconceptions in the assessments. We present results from two studies. In study 1, we looked at gains in understanding …

How Research Becomes Impact: Librarians Helping Faculty Use Scholarly Metrics To Select Journals, Marc Vinyard, Jaimie Beth Colvin

Pepperdine University Libraries

Many librarians support faculty with the publishing process, which includes journal selection and evaluating the impact of their scholarly output. While large universities have the resources for entire departments devoted to bibliometrics, the authors of this article give strategies for faculty publishing support at a smaller liberal arts university. The authors created a LibGuide with publishing resources and presented the initiative to several academic divisions. Faculty were surveyed, and the results indicated that the majority of respondents were interested in assessing journal quality and viewed the library as a resource for help with the publishing process.

The Anchor: 2018

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Digital Initiatives Symposium

Over the course of two years, a team of librarians and programmers from LSU Libraries migrated the 186 collections of the Louisiana Digital Library from OCLC's CONTENTdm platform over to the open-source Islandora platform.

Early in the process, the team understood the value of creating a reproducible metadata transformation pipeline, because there were so many unknowns at the beginning of the process along with the certainty that mistakes would be made. This presentation will describe how the team used innovative and collaborative tools, such as Trello, Ansible, Vagrant, VirtualBox, git and GitHub to accomplish the task.

Digital Initiatives Symposium

Awareness and usage of open educational resources (OER) in higher education is on the rise, thanks to OER advocates and digital repositories such as the Open Textbook Library, MERLOT, Cool4Ed, OER Commons, and more. But as the Open Education Librarian at the University of Arizona Libraries, I’ve encountered a variety of concerns from faculty and administrators about OER. These range from worries about content quality to the amount of time it takes faculty to adopt/adapt/create OER to the difficulty of finding OER in a particular subject (particularly for upper-division courses). Concerns also relate to academic freedom, campus bookstore relationships, copyright …
