A Citation Study Of Andrews University Theological Seminary Dissertations, Cynthia Mae Helms, Bernard Helms
Journal of Adventist Libraries and Archives
Citations found in Theological Seminary Ph.D./Th.D. dissertations completed between 2006 and 2010 at Andrews University were analyzed to determine how much of the cited resources were held by the library, what types of resources were used, and their age. The study showed that 2/3 of the citations were books and almost 1/3 were periodicals, 84% of the citations were held by James White Library, and the majority of the citations were published within 60 years of the dissertations’ completion dates. The study also revealed that five of the 27 most frequently cited periodicals were included in ranked lists of three …

Toward Culturally Competent Archival (Re)Description Of Marginalized Histories, Annie Tang, Dorothy Berry, Kelly Bolding, Rachel E. Winston
Library Presentations, Posters, and Audiovisual Materials
Influenced by the radical archives movement, panelists discuss their (re)processing projects for which they wrote or rewrote descriptions in culturally competent approaches. Their case studies include materials regarding underrepresented peoples and historically oppressed groups who are marginalized from or maligned in the archival record. Targeted to processors, this session aims to teach participants to apply their cultural competencies in writing finding aids through an introduction to cultural competency framework, the case study examples, and a short audience-participation exercise.

Popular With Whom?: Usage Demographics Of Popular Science Nonfiction At An Academic Library, Megan Frost, Rebecca Walton
Faculty Publications
There is a large body of nonfiction written for a general audience which is infrequently promoted in popular reading collections at academic libraries. The aim of this research is to look at the usage of nonfiction science literature at a large university library in comparison to the science collection as a whole. This information can help librarians to not only determine how best to prioritize the collection of nonfiction science literature, but it can also be used to provide insight into how popular nonfiction science books can be most effectively promoted to library patrons.

This presentation is largely about strategies for dealing with archival legacy description. Not just in terms of data migration or updating standards, but what to do when you inherit a large scale collection that was organized using a methodology that no longer works in a 21st century context. How do you move forward, and how do you document your interventions and decisions? This is what happened to me at SUNY Maritime with the college’s institutional records.

Parental support is a predictor of children’s career interest and aspirations. However, mother and father support affects youth career choices differently. To understand how perceived mothers’ and fathers’ support affect career interest in computer science (CS), we developed two path models using both mother and father support gains to predict youths’ interest in CS. We hypothesized that perceived father’s and mother’s support would relate to youths’ interest in CS via youths’ perception of CS utility value as a mediator. We found that both mother and father support leads to interest in CS. However, father support was found to affect CS …

The Consequences Of Framing Digital Humanities Tools As Easy To Use, Paige C. Morgan
The Consequences Of Framing Digital Humanities Tools As Easy To Use, Paige C. Morgan
Library Articles, Papers, and Presentations
This article examines the recurring ways in which some of the most popular DH tools are presented as easy to use. It argues that attempts to couch powerful tools in what is often false familiarity, directly undermines the goal of encouraging scholarly innovation and risk taking. The consequences of framing digital tools as either easy or more difficult shapes the relationship between librarians and the students and faculty whose research they support, and, more broadly, the role and viability of libraries as spaces devoted to skill acquisition.

Role Of Infrastructure Adequacy In The Adoption Of Digital Book Production And Distribution Hardware, Emmanuel Ifeduba
Role Of Infrastructure Adequacy In The Adoption Of Digital Book Production And Distribution Hardware, Emmanuel Ifeduba
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Digital book production machines are adopted in many academic and educational environments to enhance book production and distribution beyond what could be accomplished through the printed book. In developing economies like Nigeria where book production and distribution is badly affected by poor infrastructure, adoption of these machines is likely to make a positive difference, but it appears that publishers are not eager to adopt them for reasons yet to be clearly understood. Explanations in available literature revolve around infrastructure deficit in the areas of power supply, telecommunication bandwidth, postal facilities, Internet service providers (ISP) facilities, digital content developers, venture capital …

Library Publishing Curriculum
This unit provides a primer on aspects of United States copyright law that relate to library publishing and provides guidance on creating two essential copyright policies: 1. An externally facing copyright policy for authors considering publishing with the library publishing unit; and 2. A copyright review policy for internal purposes (i.e. how to review submitted publications for copyright issues). Nothing in this unit substitutes for legal advice or constitutes legal advice. It is important to work closely with University Counsel when working to comply with University copyright policies, legal requirements, and the needs of the publishing group.

In this initial release, it is focused on policies related to copyright, diversity, and digital preservation, and guidance on creating legal agreements. We recognize that there are many more policies that may be used by library publishers, and hope to expand this module in future.
Validation Of Digital Publishing Innovation Adoption Framework, Emmanuel Ifeduba
Validation Of Digital Publishing Innovation Adoption Framework, Emmanuel Ifeduba
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Globally, digital publishing innovations have been shown to be effective in breaking down book production and distribution barriers. However, there has been a dearth of studies on digital publishing innovations (D.P.I.) in Nigeria, particularly as it relates to predictors of innovation adoption. This study, therefore, examined the extent to which perceived contextual factors and perceived relative advantage correlate with the extent of adoption of digital publishing innovations with a view to validating a framework to aid the adoption of digital publishing in developing environments. A framework modifying the diffusion of innovations theory and the Technology, Organisation, Environment theory was designed. …

The study consists of 115 Library and Information Science Postgraduate Students in South-South, Nigeria. The information literacy self-efficacy scale (7 factors) developed by Kurbanoglu, Akkoyunlu & Umay (2006) was used to collect data. Descriptive statistics and Pearson Correlation Coefficients were used for analysis. Results indicated that the postgraduate students across the three institutions possess information literacy self-efficacy skills. However, there is significant variation in three out of the seven factors predicting information literacy self-efficacy skills. Therefore, the study recommends that information literacy self-efficacy should be …
