Preparing To Preserve: Three Essential Steps To Building Experience With Long-Term Digital Preservation, Cory Lampert, Jason Vaughan

Library Faculty Research

Many organizations face complex questions of how to implement affordable and sustainable digital preservation practices. One strategic priority at the University Libraries at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas, United States, is increased focus toward preservation of unique digital assets, whether digitized from physical originals or born digital. A team comprised of experts from multiple functional library departments (including the special collections/archives area and the technology area) was established to help address this priority, and efforts are beginning to translate into operational practice. This work outlines a three-step approach: Partnership, Policy, Pilot taken by one academic research library to strategically build …

Faculty Publications

In times of crisis, public libraries, in addition to health, fire, and police departments, are community outreach centers and sources of credible information. In October 2015, several counties in the state of South Carolina in the United States of America experienced catastrophic flooding that caused severe damage. Situation-specific research was conducted to investigate public libraries’ value to their communities in providing critical information services, as well as the libraries’ legitimacy as partners of public health agencies. The research framework is one recommended by public health experts for risk communication preparedness and implementation during pandemic influenza. In 2015, a case study …

Adoption Factors Of Integrated Library Management Systems (Ilms) In Selected Nigerian University Libraries, Adebayo Muritala Adegbore Ph.D

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Adoption of Integrated Library Management System (ILMS) in Nigerian university libraries is becoming popular. However, the literature review revealed that many libraries have been moving from one system to another and in the process losing a large chunk of library records. This situation poses a serious threat not only to ILMS adoption but also to its use. This study, therefore, sought to determine adoption factors of ILMS in Nigerian university libraries. The study design was descriptive of the qualitative survey. Twenty-five Systems Librarians from the selected university libraries formed the population. Data collection instrument was an interview checklist. Results showed …

Note-Taking And Science Inquiry In An Open-Ended Learning Environment, Yang Jiang, Jody Clarke-Midura, Bryan Keller, Ryan S. Baker, Luc Paquette, Jaclyn Ocumpaugh

Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications

Note-taking is important for academic success and has been thoroughly studied in traditional classroom contexts. Recent advancements of technology have led to more students taking notes on computers, and in different situations than are common in traditional instructional contexts. However, research on computer-based note-taking is still an emerging area, and findings from these studies are mixed. In this exploratory study, we conducted multilevel analysis to comprehensively investigate the relationship between note-taking measures and subsequent student success at science inquiry among middle school students, using two scenarios of an open-ended learning environment named Virtual Performance Assessments. Analysis revealed an advantage for …

Documentation For Team Processing: A Strategy For Internal And External Transparency, Jessica Serrao, Taylor De Klerk

Presentations

Have you ever asked yourself, what was that archivist thinking?!? This question especially rings true for legacy collections processed long ago following now-outdated theories, but it may also apply to recently processed collections. If we want to avoid becoming that archivist whose decisions our successors question, we must create and uphold more transparent processing practices. This, in turn, supports the integrity of each collection’s arrangement and description. In this presentation, two processing archivists/graduate students who processed collections together shared the strategies they created to facilitate transparency during team processing. They documented decisions in Google Sheets as they arranged materials, created …

The Rent’S Too High: Self-Archive For Fair Online Publication Costs, Robert Thibault, Amanda Macpherson, Stevan Harnad, Amir Raz

Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.

The main contributors of scientific knowledge—researchers—generally aim to disseminate their findings far and wide. And yet, publishing companies have largely kept these findings behind a paywall. With digital publication technology markedly reducing cost, this enduring wall seems disproportionate and unjustified; moreover, it has sparked a topical exchange concerning how to modernize academic publishing. This discussion, however, seems to focus on how to compensate major publishers for providing open access through a pay-to-publish model, in turn transferring financial burdens from libraries to authors and their funders. Large publishing companies, including Elsevier, Springer Nature, Wiley, PLoS, and Frontiers, continue to earn exorbitant …
