JETstream: Library Newsletter
The JET Library kicked off 2017 with an always well-received event, our annual “Beat the Blahs” Party, sponsored by the Office of the President. This year, we featured a dessert table where members of the Molloy Community brought in their favorite desserts to share with everyone. We also held our first JET Bake-off, with Karen Cusumano, Executive Assistant in the President’s Office, being awarded a “Certificate in Excellence in Baking” with her “Classic Sour Cream Cheese Cake.” Requests have been received by the library asking if she will share her recipe! Although we definitely did enjoy a delicious feast, I …

How many questions can you generate when looking at a single comic panel? Which are researchable, and why? These are questions that we’ve asked our students and our library colleagues. We invite you to ask these questions and more, and consider the broader significance of question-asking and reflective teaching to information literacy and ask if there is a place for comics -- or image-laden materials -- in your classroom.

University libraries are increasingly moving to develop programs to eliminate or dramatically reduce textbook costs. These services appeal to prospective students and can also improve student learning outcomes and retention rates. But how do you get buy-in, build consensus, get funding, and drive real change? This panel discussion will present four libraries’ successes and challenges as they work to eliminate textbook costs for students.
Search Strategy Development In A Flipped Library Classroom: A Student-Focused Assessment, Michael C. Goates, Gregory M. Nelson, Megan Frost
Search Strategy Development In A Flipped Library Classroom: A Student-Focused Assessment, Michael C. Goates, Gregory M. Nelson, Megan Frost
Faculty Publications
Librarians at Brigham Young University compared search statement development between traditional lecture and flipped instruction sessions. Students in lecture sessions scored significantly higher on developing search statements than those in flipped sessions. However, student evaluations show a strong preference for pedagogies that incorporate elements from both lecture and flipped methodologies. Reasons for lower flipped-session scores may include a lack of student accountability, strong preference for a live demonstration, and disconnections between online tutorial content and in-class collaborative activities. Librarians using a flipped classroom should consider ways to help students make meaningful connections between online tutorials and in-class activities.

Library Scholarship
As scholars begin their tenure-track position, so too begins the expectation that they will publish within all the traditional channels. However, many of these publication channels often restrict access to who will read and learn from these works. The academic culture has traditionally focused on where scholars should publish, and less frequently on how to make these works open and public. Open access publishers and institutional repositories are influencing academic culture, but there are still many reservations, anxieties, and lack of awareness. Marcel Mauss (1990) is well known for his gift theory, human exchange is expected to be reciprocal. The …
