Promoting A Service Culture Across Technical And Public Services: Lessons From Electronic Resource Access (Era) Troubleshooting And Support, Jeffrey M. Mortimore
Promoting A Service Culture Across Technical And Public Services: Lessons From Electronic Resource Access (Era) Troubleshooting And Support, Jeffrey M. Mortimore
University Libraries: Faculty Presentations
This session explores the public and technical services nexus from the viewpoint of electronic resource access (ERA) support. The presenter considers competencies for delivering effective ERA support, including recent research that suggests communication and referral skills fostered in reference work may rank more highly than technical skills alone. In addition, the presenter will consider the importance of triage and communications planning for managing expectations of library personnel and shaping user needs.

We are developing an experiential learning program, “Preparing Students to be Arbiters of New Scholarship,” funded by our campus teaching center. Through this work, we have found much enthusiasm for publishing student scholarship. However, we have also heard a wide range of concerns about sharing student work more widely. In this poster, we will describe how we are engaging both the enthusiasm and the concerns as rich opportunities in an experiential learning framework.
Student journal publishing is intrinsically a co-curricular experiential learning activity. Our campus’s framework for experiential learning includes: 1. Innovate and take risks 2. Solve complex problems 3. …

Librarians and instructional designers formed an informal partnership to promote low-cost textbook solutions in the absence of formal initiatives at a public, four-year institution. Learn how we negotiated institutional barriers such as bookstore contract prohibitions and protected revenue streams. Our case examples describe solutions and workflows undertaken to transform course materials, in addition to activities being pursued to make textbook affordability an institutional priority.

This poster will highlight techniques for the visualization of scholarly impact data being used at a masters-granting public university for the purpose of outreach to faculty. We have built a scholarly communication support service through liaison librarians who are provided with scholarly communication professional development. A key component of this outreach is the utilization of new metrics that celebrate and highlight academic achievements of department faculty. Presented March 24, 2017, ACRL 2017, Baltimore MD.

El Croquis, GA Houses, AV Monografías: monographic serials or serial monographs? These titles represent some of the highest-quality sources for the plans, sections, elevations, and site plans students rely on in their study of architectural precedents, so we want students to be able to exploit them thoroughly. How our library catalogs display these resources–as periodicals with a basic serial record, or as monographs with individual titles, subject headings, and content notes –significantly affects how discoverable and, ultimately, how useful their best features are. This presentation examines how we at Clemson’s Gunnin Architecture Library went about rethinking and reconfiguring our treatment …

Rethinking Library Technical Services
Rethinking Library Technical Services
Faculty Publications and Presentations
The purpose of this roundtable presentation was to discuss the value or lack of value in tracking cataloging statistics; to query how other technical service departments are handling poor quality vendor records for electronic resources; and the stress of limited budgets and shrinking staff. The title of this discussion came from the book with the same title by Mary Beth Weber. The attached document contains topics of interest within that book, quotes from that book, as well as related resources.

Repository managers can never be one hundred percent sure of the security of hosted research data. Even assuming that human errors and technical faults will never happen, repositories can be subject to hacking attacks. Therefore, repositories accepting personal/sensitive data (or other forms of restricted data) should have workflows in place with defined procedures to be followed should things go wrong and restricted data is inappropriately released. In this paper we will report on our considerations and procedures when restricted data from our institution was inappropriately released.

Warning! This Program Contains Graphic Content: Facilitating Understanding Of Library Terms Through Visual Rhetoric, Gayle Schaub, Vinicius Lima
Presentations
Building on recently published research, an academic librarian and art professor facilitate the design and creation of visual and text pieces that illustrate information literacy terms’ meanings. This informational campaign uses data from a large-scale assessment of student comprehension of terms used in library instruction and syllabi. It offers an innovative way to teach students the language they need to be effective researchers, while detailing a library-art department collaboration that gives students a real-world learning experience.

For decades, student folklorists have been collecting stories, jokes, and tall tales from their neighbors in our community. This is an integral part of research lives of students as well as an essential collection for those interested in American folklives. This poster explores the design of an online database and preservation process for this collection as well as ongoing digitization efforts to make this work available to larger scholarly communities.

Copley Library: Faculty Scholarship
It’s tempting to view academic social networking sites (ASNS) -- such as Academia.edu -- as rivals to library publishing efforts. They compete for faculty attention and operate under dubious intentions. On their website, Academia.edu claims “the company's mission is to accelerate the world's research” but Kathleen Fitzpatrick, Associate Executive Director and Director of Scholarly Communication at the Modern Language Association, points out that “Academia.edu is not an educationally-affiliated organization, but a dot-com, which has raised millions in multiple rounds of venture capital funding” while Gary Hall, Professor of Media and Performing Arts and Director of the Centre for Disruptive Media …

Open access textbook publishing initiatives not only provide libraries the opportunity to recast their longstanding mission to facilitate research and remove barriers to information but they also impact student affordability efforts. How can a library build a program that will meet the needs of students, faculty, and administrators? The answer lies in collaboration and sharing. In 2013, with the support of a Provost-backed initiative, Portland State University (PSU) Library developed an open textbook publishing program that works with faculty to create open textbooks specifically designed for a course. The publishing initiative, PDXOpen, has published 10 open textbooks with an additional …

Going Beyond The One-Shot: Spiraling Information Literacy Across Four Year, Shawna E. Egan, Alan Witt, Shawna M. Chartier
Milne Library
Many institutions overwhelm the first year seminar with “one-shot” library instruction sessions, which are not necessarily linked to any form of assignment or assessment. So how can librarians maintain information literacy instruction throughout a student's academic career? Data collected by the Rivier University librarians showcases the ability to implement information literacy more effectively by streamlining and leveling it out over a four-year period.

Digital Renewal: Exposing Local Urban Planning Publications To A New Audience, Emily Stenberg
WashU Libraries Presentations
In late 2015 the Art & Architecture librarian contacted the Digital Publishing Librarian about expanding access to a high-demand local book. This was a HUD report on the Pruitt-Igoe public housing project in St. Louis. Our university had the only print copy in circulation in the region, and the report was in high demand among design and urban planning students. Following consultation with the Copyright and Digital Access Librarian, it was decided to digitize the report and publish it in the repository. Since then at least five additional publications have been published online and have become part of the St. …

Teaching Citation Rhetorically: Reading, Not Just Writing, Nancy M. Foasberg

Citation practices are often taught as a list of rules, rather than a rhetorical practice necessary to the scholarly conversation. This presentation recommends some pedagogical strategies that encourage students to read citations and consider them as messages, rather than a set of rules to follow.

From Digital Literacy To Digital Wisdom, Michael Paulus
From Digital Literacy To Digital Wisdom, Michael Paulus
SPU Works
Marc Prensky, who popularized the term “digital natives” more than ten years ago, now emphasizes the need for “digital wisdom”: using digital technologies wisely to become wiser people. Research reveals that we cannot presume the digital literacy of so-called digital natives, and that many of us do not use technology wisely. This presentation will introduce a framework for digital literacy that library and educational technology faculty and staff are using at Seattle Pacific University to shape service, curricular, and faculty development strategies to cultivate reflective and ethical uses of digital information technologies.
