Here, There And Everywhere: An Analysis Of Reference Services In Academic Archives, Amanda Oliver, Amanda Jamieson, Anne Daniel May 2017

Here, There And Everywhere: An Analysis Of Reference Services In Academic Archives, Amanda Oliver, Amanda Jamieson, Anne Daniel

Western Libraries Publications

The purpose of this study is to investigate how archivists conduct reference services. The investigators administered two surveys to 19 participants at 15 Canadian academic archives to understand archivists’ behaviour while performing reference. There is no standard approach to reference as many archivists use institution-specific tools coupled with their own knowledge. Finding aids are the most frequently accessed tool and are most often used in conjunction with other tools. Limited resources are the primary barrier to the provision of effective reference services. The tools that are employed by archives are archivist focused, which results in reference services that are not …

The Protection Of Indigenous Intellectual Property Rights, Melissa Seelye May 2017

The Protection Of Indigenous Intellectual Property Rights, Melissa Seelye

FIMS Presentations

Librarians and archivists have played prominent roles in initiatives aimed at preserving indigenous cultural heritage in recent decades. Such initiatives have evolved in response to the relative lack of legal protections for indigenous cultural heritage of an intangible nature, especially compared to title laws intended to regulate the use of indigenous lands, burial sites, and plants. Even non-legally binding resolutions that take a holistic approach to indigenous property have proven contentious, with the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) having only been ratified in 2007, despite being drafted in 1993. Grounded in a critical understanding of …

"Where Are The Bathrooms?": Academic Library Restrooms And Student Needs, Stephanie Margolin, Jennifer Poggiali May 2017

"Where Are The Bathrooms?": Academic Library Restrooms And Student Needs, Stephanie Margolin, Jennifer Poggiali

Publications and Research

This article investigates bathrooms, paying specific attention to those in academic libraries. The authors describe how bathrooms have been considered in the library literature for the past century and challenges to changing the status quo. Finally, this work sets the stage for future inquiry. Research materials come from a range of sources: historical library literature, building codes, social science theory and research that address the issues around bathroom taboos, and checklists for assessing bathrooms. The authors propose librarians and library administrators reconsider all aspects of their own bathrooms: location, features, equity/inclusiveness, and maintenance in service to their patrons.

Faculty–Library Collaborations In Digital History: A Case Study Of The Travel Journal Of Cornelius B. Gold, Ann Marie Davis, Jessica Mccullough, Benjamin Panciera, Rebecca Parmer

Information Services Staff Publications and Presentations

In this article, the authors present a case study on a teaching and learning initiative in digital humanities at Connecticut College. The article outlines a project in which students in a midlevel history course collaborated with library staff and faculty to develop a digital exhibition on a nineteenth-century journal in the College's collection. The cooperative approach and institutional support that the team received provided an effective and flexible means for achieving common goals. As students applied emergent technologies to college collections, they were able to conduct meaningful research and bring archival resources to new audiences.

Creating A Virtuous Circle Of Student Engagement With The Tech Corner, Brian R. Shuck, Susan B. Wainscott, Jennifer Church-Duran, Darcy C. Del Bosque

Library Faculty Research

While many academic libraries have followed the public library lead in developing maker-spaces, not all libraries have the money or space to dedicate to such large-scale operations. This case study explores a different approach to engaging users with new technology and investigates how to support their creativity without a costly investment in space and staffing. It demonstrates not only how students can be provided a virtual space to explore technology equipment, but also how their opinions can be leveraged for growing the collection and creating training materials.

Stitching Codeable Circuits: High School Students' Learning About Circuitry And Coding With Electronic Textiles, Breanne Krystine Litts, Yasmin B. Kafai, Debora A. Lui, Justice T. Walker, Sari A. Widman

Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications

Learning about circuitry by connecting a battery, light bulb, and wires is a common activity in many science classrooms. In this paper, we expand students’ learning about circuitry with electronic textiles, which use conductive thread instead of wires and sewable LEDs instead of lightbulbs, by integrating programming sensor inputs and light outputs and examining how the two domains interact. We implemented an electronic textiles unit with 23 high school students ages 16–17 years who learned how to craft and code circuits with the LilyPad Arduino, an electronic textile construction kit. Our analyses not only confirm significant increases in students’ understanding of …

To identify areas for quality and consistency improvement, we evaluated the search methodologies in 64 Urology Group Reviews/Protocols.

METHODS

64 published Urology Group Cochrane Systematic Reviews (CSR) and Protocols (CSP) were downloaded from the Cochrane Library on September 15, 2016. A data form was created using Qualtrics consisting of several sections including expanded PRESS (Peer-Review of Electronic Search Strategies) elements, database selection, search methodology reporting, & consistency. Four librarians, …

Collect Them All: Helping Students Find Their Subject Librarian With Bitmojis, Lauren Puzier, Tyler Norton May 2017

Collect Them All: Helping Students Find Their Subject Librarian With Bitmojis, Lauren Puzier, Tyler Norton

University Libraries Faculty Scholarship

The University Libraries Marketing Committee launched a campaign in Spring 2017 to connect students with their subject librarians and to increase awareness of the role of subject librarians and the services they provide. Trading cards were implemented to do this; they serve as an alternative to business cards and feature Bitmoji, cartoon keyboard avatars. The Bitmoji mobile app has grown 3986% in the past year among adults aged 18 and older, therefore Bitmoji offered a potentially popular and recognizable way to represent subject librarians. Bitmojis are also very versatile: they can be personalized, they offer librarians a digital identity, and …

Designing Effective Teams For Technical Services: The Role Of Leadership, Followership, And Group Emotional Intelligence, Emily A. Hicks

Roesch Library Faculty Presentations

Teams make better decisions, develop more creative solutions, and achieve a higher level of productivity when the group has a high level of trust, a sense of group identity, and a sense of group efficacy. This presentation will discuss the role of leadership, followership, and group emotional intelligence in teams and the implications for library technical services. Good followership is vital in today’s highly collaborative, team-oriented libraries because the line between leaders and those they lead is often blurred. The key to defining followership, as in leadership, lies with the relationship between leaders and followers. Effective followers possess skills that …

Mainstreaming University Publications: Designing Collaboration Across Library Units For Discovery And Access, Cindy Cline, Ruth E. Bryan

Library Presentations

Various divisions, branches, and departments within the University of Kentucky Libraries collect University publications, most especially the University Archives. Depending on the reasons for acquisition and the Library area's descriptive practices, the publications are more or less discoverable by fellow librarians and by researchers. Is it possible to develop workflows that allow the University Archivist to collect and maintain University publications at a collection or unit level, while simultaneously providing bibliographic item-level access to the same publications? In today's environment of high levels of technology, library and archives online management systems, and discovery systems, is it possible for libraries and …

Faculty Publications

A unique collection of English land indentures from the 16th to 20th centuries is at the center of a large undertaking at BYU’s Perry Special Collections. Born of a simple faculty digitization request, a much larger project with the potential to benefit other classes and researchers developed through the collaboration and coordination of multiple departments and individuals. This project required close collaboration between the faculty member who made the original digitization request, the Special Collections curator, our Collection Management team, the Conservation lab, our Manuscripts Cataloger, the digital lab, our Metadata Cataloging Specialist and multiple student workers. This presentation gives …
