University Libraries Librarian and Staff Articles and Papers
Our paper draws together conceptual innovations emerging from the work of a group of researchers focussed on the relational approach to information literacy, more recently labelled ‘informed learning’. Team members have been working together in various configurations for periods ranging from seven to seventeen years. Our collaborative approach continues to yield new concepts and constructs which we believe to be of value to ongoing research and practice. Some of the ideas discussed have been previouly published, while others are being put forward for the first time. All are significant in that they together form new constructs that have emerged from …

Comparative Analysis Of Big Data Analytics Software In Assessing Sample Data, Soly Mathew Biju, Alex Mathew
Comparative Analysis Of Big Data Analytics Software In Assessing Sample Data, Soly Mathew Biju, Alex Mathew
Journal of International Technology and Information Management
Over the last few years, big data has emerged as an important topic of discussion in most firms owing to its ability of creation, storage and processing of content at a reasonable price. Big data consists of advanced tools and techniques to process large volumes of data in organisations. Investment in big data analytics has almost become a necessity in large-sized firms, particularly multinational companies, for its unique benefits, particularly in prediction and identification of various trends. Some of the most popular big data analytics software used today are MapReduce, Hive, Tableau and Hive, while the framework Hadoop enables easy …

Building On Success: Using Assessment To Expand Library Outreach Services, Katie Bishop, Tammi Owens
Criss Library Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
Discussion:
- A needs assessment intake form standardizing program director interviews is important; original system of interview notes was not viable long-term.
- Workshops were well-attended when marketed to students who were rewarded for attendance: TLC primary audience in fall, Comp II in spring.
- Unpopular fall workshops were removed from the spring schedule.
- Because roving was less successful at OMVS we will teach library skills to their peer tutoring staff.
- Data sharing with OMVS uncovered unfilled need; led to outreach plan to support underachieving Comp II students.
Leadership And Innovative Practices In Nigerian Academic Libraries, Adetola Akanbiemu
Leadership And Innovative Practices In Nigerian Academic Libraries, Adetola Akanbiemu
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Abstract
The paper discusses the importance of leadership on innovative practices in academic libraries in Nigeria. Academic libraries are expected to provide services in all forms, they provide reference services, technical, readers’ services and so on, and also providing information resources in all kinds of format .Being a routine-like organization, users will desire new methods and expect creativity. Without creativity, turnout to the library may be less. Hence, good and innovative library leadership is important to keep its relevance to the university. It is therefore crucial for academic libraries to have effective leadership that will foster creativity and innovative practices. …

Posters and Presentations: Leon S. McGoogan Health Sciences Library
For the last three years, library faculty have provided face-to-face and distance literacy instruction sessions to health professional students on five campuses around the country, strengthening connections between students and the main campus. Faculty appreciate the interdisciplinary collaboration and students receive instruction in essential research skills. This model highlights the benefits of incorporating librarians into your curriculum.

Turning Wrongs Into Rights: Implementation Of Rightsstatements.Org At Washington University, Micah Zeller
WashU Libraries Presentations
As many librarians who work with digital collections know, ambiguous or meaningless rights statements can cause confusion and limit downstream use of materials. Following DPLA and Europeana's lead in drafting simple, standardized terms that help metadata contributors more effectively communicate copyright and re-use status of digital objects, we evaluated materials in 50+ exhibits at Washington University Libraries in order to assign each an appropriate statement from RightsStatements.org and help facilitate the same for other contributors to the Missouri Hub. This poster focuses on the implementation of project statements and recommendations. Its purpose is to share and discuss practical steps and …

What About Classification Bias?: Channeling Sandy Berman, F. Tim Knight
Librarian Publications & Presentations
As libraries explore new avenues of information access, the need for a critical evaluation of our bibliographic tools is more important than ever. With the potential of the emerging semantic web and the promise of linked data, how will systems originally designed to organize closed physical collections translate to an increasingly fragmented digital information space? How will deep-seated cultural biases affect access to a cross-cultural information environment? This paper will review the work of Sandy Berman’s Prejudices and Antipathies: A Tract on the LC Subject Heads Concerning People aiming to explore a critical framework to evaluate the cultural interoperability of …
