Using case studies from two academic libraries (Gettysburg College and Lycoming College), this presentation demonstrated how libraries can strengthen the profession by nurturing undergraduates to explore librarianship as a career. The presentation provided a snapshot of how libraries may mentor students, either informally or through a formal internship program, including how to supervise interns and fund, market, and structure the internship.

This case study reviews the responsive Web design project undertaken by the Library, Technological University Dublin, with Granite Digital, including the preparatory literature review, the design process, task allocation, and the technologies leveraged to deliver the final design. The library is a small academic library with limited resources, and the project took place during a particularly challenging period in Ireland. The different types of testing the site underwent before launch are discussed, including testing of the design itself across browsers, accessibility testing using free online resources, testing the responsive design using free online resources, and physical device testing. Medium of performance is critical for music retrieval and has long been a complex facet of music cataloging. Recent years saw significant strides towards standardizing the vocabulary and encoding medium of performance data in the MARC environment as well as in the linked data environment. In the course of leading the MLA BIBFRAME task force to examine the potentials of expressing, standardizing, and implementing music-related data and data structures, I discovered our handling of medium of performance has not been consistent with respect to the FRBR constructs of “work” and “expression,” as well as the concept of “event.” After the …

This research examines the development of the system brands of three public libraries: Live Oak Public Libraries, Richland Library, and Charlotte Mecklenberg Library. A system brand may be defined as the overall brand of a library system, as opposed to any of its sub-brands, such as those associated with individual library services, branches, departments, and events. Using a descriptive, case study approach, this research characterizes the efforts behind branding in these library systems.

Editing and publishing a student research journal is a high-impact educational practice that libraries are uniquely suited to support. Gettysburg College’s Musselman Library hosts three student-edited journals in our open access institutional repository. We train student editors to use the online journal publishing platform to receive, assign, and review submissions. We also expose them to the scope of undergraduate publishing beyond our institution, describe the benefits of open access publishing to authors (including sharing their own use metrics), invite professors who edit professional journals to share their expertise with the students, and facilitate a discussion about how their editing process …

This presentation will suggest reports to run, comparisons to make, and tables to be familiar with in order ensure your circulation policies are in step with your library collections. We’ll examine specific circulation parameters such as the Loan Rule Determiner Table, Patron Blocks, and Loan Rules. We’ll also discuss how Create Lists and Statistical Reports can identify problematic areas in your item record coding.

Undergraduate Library Collection Use And Diversity: Testing For Racial And Gender Differences, Gail Herrera

Library Publications

This study examined gender and racial differences among undergraduate library collection users at the University of Mississippi. Checkout and electronic resource use data were compiled for the calendar year 2014. These data were used along with statistical testing to distinguish between groups and determine how well the library collection was serving both historically underserved and nonminority populations. The results indicate that minority groups are served as well as, if not better than, the control groups.

The presentation will give an overview of the migration of the Louisiana Digital Library (LDL) from CONTENTdm to Islandora. Metadata transformation, file conversions, workflows, and useful tools will be covered. The presenter will provide a tour of the new software from the user's perspective, and will highlight improved features such as faceting, search capabilities, and viewers. A comparison of the uploading and editing processes in Islandora versus CONTENTdm will be offered. The presentation will conclude with a discussion of features in development.

As federal funding requirements continue to evolve and more publishers are requiring open data sharing as a condition of publication, academic libraries have an important role to play supporting campus researchers’ data management needs. During this session, we will explore in detail the National Science Foundation’s current data management requirements, giving special attention to data planning as part of the NSF’s grant application process. In so doing, we will discuss basic tools and levels of service for supporting campus researchers throughout the data life cycle.

When a position for Interlibrary Loan Librarian came open at Georgia Southern University in the latter part of 2015, I was intrigued. Although ensconced happily in a public library position and a 10-year veteran of public systems, the lure of an academic position-along with logistical considerations-prompted me to apply for the position. I believe my observations about the hiring, though anecdotal, begin to unravel a conversation comparing and contrasting academic libraries with public libraries, possibly to the benefit of both institutions.

This session focuses on how ILL and Technical Services personnel at Georgia Southern University are using ILL request information to troubleshoot and improve electronic resource access across our collections. We will explore the kinds of access issues ILL lending and borrowing requests reveal, discuss strategies for issue reporting and feedback, and consider the benefits of leveraging ILL requests to identify, mediate, and resolve access issues, sometimes before they ever crop up at the reference desk.
