Many competing claims have been made about the time and expense of maintaining different discovery tools in the academic library setting. Analysis of traffic, visits, and views may be inadequate data to focus this discussion. Analysis of high impact referrals, those that lead directly to downloads and denials, is more meaningful. Downloads are an indicator of worth, as are denials. This brief session will outline what a major STM publisher looks for in the profile of the discovery layer of its academic clients.

During the 2015-16 academic year, librarians at the University of Rochester River Campus Libraries prototyped and refined Taking Control of Your Research Path, an eight-week/one-hour-per-week workshop. This workshop series covered a process for success: identifying one's own research interests, learning about the work of researchers and research groups, building skills in elevator pitches and informational interviewing, networking with peers advisors and finally interviewing with potential research groups. Every Fall, Cornell’s Mann Library holds a Local Food & Fiber Fair bringing together farmers and artisans from the local community and students, faculty and staff in the library lobby. In this talk, we will discuss efforts to transform this annual community festival from a mere transactional market to an experiential learning fair. By asking that all vendors incorporate an educational demonstration with their booth, the fair becomes a collection of active workshops where visitors can learn to spin wool, compost with worms, pickle produce, and inoculate logs while also supporting local merchants. Undergraduate biology students at St. John Fisher College have several opportunities to engage with the concept of Scholarly Publishing and consequently three different frames from the Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education; Information Creation as a Process, Information Has Value, and Scholarship as Conversation. In an effort to improve the users’ experience when accessing our institutional repository, we decided to add closed captioning to all videos. We investigated a number of options such as local streaming servers and vended products, but could not find one that could meet our needs in terms of accessibility, compatibility with our repository platform, and easy of storage and management of videos. We then decided to test YouTube as a possible solution. We were pleased to learn that YouTube had auto closed captioning/transcription, a method of merging previously transcribed text with videos posted in YouTube, and an easy method …

Both librarians and student employees staff our virtual reference service, so ensuring consistent and quality chat transactions is important. Sample transcripts from fall 2014 were evaluated, and a fall 2015 follow-up analysis reviewed service improvement efforts. This year Cornell University Library on Ithaca's campus launched a systematic review service in response to demand from non-medicine disciplines on campus. We have worked with various disciplines, including nutrition and the natural sciences, and soon realized that the definition of what is a "systematic review" is not universal. I will speak about the experience of setting up the systematic review service, challenges in communicating what a systematic review is, and what we have learned.

At Le Moyne College, Information Literacy (IL) is one of the learning goals for the Department of Biological Sciences. This presentation will discuss how the Science Librarian worked with Biology faculty to identify five measurable learning outcomes that meet Biology’s broader IL learning goal. Additionally, I will discuss the collaboration with faculty to scaffold the teaching approach for these five learning outcomes. The University of North Florida’s Thomas G. Carpenter Library offers a research consultation service that allows users to schedule one-on-one meetings with a research librarian to discuss their projects. These sessions may consist of a general orientation to library facilities and resources, or may focus on specific research needs. The service has experienced amazing growth since its inception in 2009. The research librarians decided to assess the consultations in large part to decipher why it has grown so significantly, and to ensure that the service remains high quality in the face of growth.

Play Your Cards Right: Creating A Library Orientation Game (Poster), Kelly Giles, Kristen S. Shuyler, Andrew Evans, Jonathan Reed

A team of four librarians and staff drew upon previous experience with game-based learning to develop an orientation activity for transfer students. "Apples to Apples"-style cards were created using a free online card generator. The game exposed transfer students to information about the campus library system in a low-key way that allowed players with different knowledge levels to socialize and compete against one another on an equal basis.

Assessment, planning, and budgeting are interrelated disciplines that play an important role in accomplishing a library's mission. This conference session introduces tools and concepts that will equip attendees to manage library services strategically in response to evolving customer needs and environmental conditions. Four tools—the logic model, six dimensions of assessment, the balanced scorecard, and the business model canvas—will enable managers to evaluate, plan, and communicate progress in the pursuit of mission and vision. Additionally, two concepts—opportunity cost and the principal-agent problem—will provide context for planning and budgeting decisions.

This study was designed to investigate core values of librarianship and practice of Information Ethics by librarians in four higher institutions in Oyo State, Nigeria. Survey research design was employed to study the population size consisted of 47 librarians using total enumeration sampling technique. Questionnaire and interview for four (4) Senior Librarians at the selected institutions were the instruments used for data collection; three research questions and one null hypothesis were formulated for this study. Output format of SPSS based on simple frequency count, percentage distribution, mean, standard deviation, and Pearson’s Chi-Square was used for data analysis. The findings of …
