During a time of stagnating budgets and rising journal costs, Central Washington University’s Brooks Library evaluated and added a popular print magazine collection and worked with faculty to eliminate redundant and low-use resources. The process of identifying the need, researching, evaluating, and gaining student input for popular magazines to be added to a recently opened coffee shop is addressed first. Secondly, the systematic approach the library used to identify journal titles received in multiple formats and low-use/high-cost resources then worked with faculty to change access models to realize a net savings is discussed. Universities expand their online graduate programs daily, which challenges academic librarians to maintain research support and information literacy instruction for the growing number of online students. Performance support offers a scalable solution to the problems of limited time and staffing that academic librarians face. When embedded in the learning management system throughout a course or program, performance support provides point of need research help and scaffolds students’ information literacy development. Librarians are able to focus their limited time helping students with their more advanced research needs.

The chapter appears in the second volume of the series Creating the 21st-Century Academic Library, and addresses the legalities and practicalities of open access in academic libraries, including support for courses that require public distribution of student work. It begins by examining literature on scholarly communications, undergraduate students, and the role of libraries, and then shares the authors’ specific experience with a cross-section of courses: an engineering capstone where students are required to “publish” their final papers to the institutional repository, an archaeology course where students create and upload videos to YouTube, and an American Culture Studies seminar where students …

The University of Central Florida's institutional repository, STARS (Showcase of Text, Archives, Research & Scholarship), has presented new opportunities for collaboration amongst the Libraries' Office of Scholarly Communication, Digital Initiatives, Research Services, and Subject Librarians. Open Peer Review is a current and developing practice in scholarly publishing that librarians need to continue to explore and discuss. To that end ACRL should continue to support experiments with and conversations about OPR in its publications. As academic librarians, we observe and engage with new practices in scholarly communication, and OPR should be no exception. Whether academic librarianship embraces OPR as a model of peer review for its publications, or we simply observe experiments in other disciplines, we can position ourselves to better support our patrons and our publishing ventures by examining OPR.

Most top impact factor ecology journals indicate a preference or requirement for short manuscripts; some state clearly defined word limits, whereas others indicate a preference for more concise papers. Yet evidence from a variety of academic fields indicates that within journals longer papers are both more positively reviewed by referees and more highly cited. We examine the relationship between citations received and manuscript length, number of authors, and number of references cited for papers published in 32 ecology journals between 2009 and 2012. We find that longer papers, those with more authors, and those that cite more references are cited …

These slides were used in an interactive session at the Professional and Organizational Development Network in Higher Education (POD) conference held in Louisville, KY, November 9-13, 2016. The session focused on instructors applying informed learning design to craft better learning experiences and prepare students for success by providing more guidance about student engagement with information. Drawing from informed learning pedagogic theory, informed learning design provides a framework for developing learning activities that foster learning through intentional engagement with information.
