Identification And Development Of Patron Personas For An Academic Library, Holt Zaugg, Scott Rackham
Identification And Development Of Patron Personas For An Academic Library, Holt Zaugg, Scott Rackham
Faculty Publications
Purpose. Ranganathan’s Laws of Library Science and continued refinements to his initial laws place identification of patron’s needs and connection of those needs to library services of primary importance in libraries (Ranganathan, 1931; Crawford & Gorman, 1995; Noruzi, 2004). Identifying and developing personas or user group descriptions helps to identify the unique nature of library patrons. Each persona helps librarians to identify or create services specific to the persona of library patrons. As each library persona is better understood, the library faculty and staff are able to prepare and plan for service delivery. Initially personas were developed for undergraduate …

Working over a span of nearly eight years, the University of Michigan Library received three grants from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) to generously fund CRMS, a cooperative effort by partner research libraries to identify books in the public domain in HathiTrust. In CRMS- US (2008– 11), CRMS reviewed over 170,000 volumes in the HathiTrust Digital Library that were published in the United States between 1923 and 1963 (“CRMS- US”). That first project team— which included reviewers from the University of Michigan, the University of Wisconsin, the University of Minnesota, and Indiana University— identified nearly 87,000 volumes …

Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.
This report identifies ways through which subscription-based scholarly journals have converted their publishing models to open access (OA). The major goal was to identify specific scenarios that have been used or proposed for transitioning subscription journals to OA so that these scenarios can provide options for others seeking to “flip” their journals to OA. The report is based on the published literature as well as “gray” literature such as blog posts and press releases. In addition, interviews were conducted with eight experts in scholarly publishing. The report identifies a variety of goals for converting a journal to OA. While there …

Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.
This tool is designed to help presses of all sizes determine the full costs of publishing monographs. It may be useful if you are preparing to apply for a subvention to publish a monograph and need an itemized cost statement. Or, it might just be information you need to have in order to better assess and run your business. The process described below will be easiest if centrally coordinated, whether by the press director, business manager, or the Chief Financial Officer. It will almost certainly require some time for departmental heads. Whether or not you choose to involve more staff …

Open Educational Resources (OER) — teaching, learning and research materials that their owners make free for others to use, revise and share — offer a powerful means of expanding the reach and effectiveness of worldwide education.
The Commonwealth of Learning (COL) and UNESCO co-organised the World OER Congress in 2012 in Paris. That Congress resulted in the OER Paris Declaration: a statement that urged governments around the world to release, as OER, all teaching, learning and research materials developed with public funds.
This book, drawing on 15 case studies contributed by 29 OER researchers and policy-makers from 15 countries across …

The NISO Alternative Assessment Metrics Initiative was begun in July 2013 with funding from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, and divided into two phases. Phase II of the Project, which began in late 2014, set out to develop standards covering particular action items identified in Phase I through the creation of three NISO working groups. This document represents the output of the working group tasked with the following action items:
1. To come up with specific definitions for the terms commonly used in alternative assessment metrics, enabling different stakeholders to talk about the same thing; and
2. To identify the …
Strengthening Research Through Data Sharing, Elizabeth Warren
Strengthening Research Through Data Sharing, Elizabeth Warren
Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.
Data sharing has incredible potential to strengthen academic research, the practice of medicine, and the integrity of the clinical trial system. Some benefits are obvious: when researchers have access to complete data, they can answer new questions, explore different lines of analysis, and more efficiently conduct large-scale analyses across trials. Other advantages, such as providing a guardrail against conflicts of interest in a clinical trial system in which external sponsorship of research is common and necessary, are less visible yet just as critical. I appreciate that there are many policy, privacy, and practical issues that need to be addressed in …

Are Self-Perception Measures Used In School Library Research Transferable To The Context Of Public Library Summer Reading Programs?, Marilyn P. Arnone, Ruth V. Small, Shicheng Weng
School of Information Studies - Faculty Scholarship
Several instruments previously validated for use in school library research were tested for their appropriateness in the context of public libraries’ summer reading programs for youth. The researchers were also interested in whether the connection between perceived competence in one’s own information skills and perceived competence in one’s own reading skills, as found in school library research, might also exist for participants in public library summer reading programs. In addition, a separate research question explored whether youth participants connected the summer reading program to increased confidence and improvement in their reading abilities. Findings suggest that reliable measures that can be …

Classifying Identity: Organizing An Lgbt Library, Kristine Nowak, Amy Jo Mitchell
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Although we tend to see classification as a socially and morally neutral activity, classification systems often incorporate societal prejudices and marginalize disadvantaged populations. These systematic prejudices are not only problematic because they are oppressive, but they also impair successful information access. In this paper, we will discuss our work as librarians at the Gay and Lesbian Services Organization (GLSO), a pride center in Lexington, Kentucky. We will discuss the problems that resulted from initially using Library of Congress classification to classify a library of LGBT materials, as well as our decision to create a unique classification system for that collection. …

Conceptual Models On The Effectiveness Of E-Marketing Strategies In Engaging Consumers, Cheristena Bolos, Efosa C. Idemudia, Phoebe Mai, Mahesh Rasinghani, Shelley Smith
Journal of International Technology and Information Management
Effective marketing has always been an important factor in business success. Without the ability to identify customers and convince them to purchase the product or service being offered, businesses would not survive. Recent advancements in technology have given rise to new opportunities to engage customers through the use of electronic marketing (e-marketing). E- marketing draws from traditional marketing principles, while also expanding the types of strategies available to companies. Websites, social media, and online marketplaces are just some examples of how businesses are leveraging e-marketing approaches to connect with potential customers. In formulating sound e-marketing strategies, it is important for …
Healthcare System-Use Behavior: A Systematic Review Of Its Determinants, Jiming Wu
Healthcare System-Use Behavior: A Systematic Review Of Its Determinants, Jiming Wu
Journal of International Technology and Information Management
To understand patient and physician behavior, researchers have investigated the determinants of using healthcare information systems. Although this stream of research has produced important findings, it has yet to appreciably advance our understanding of system-use behavior in healthcare. To fill this gap, the current paper employs a systematic review to synthesize past research, reveal the key determinants of healthcare system usage, and illuminate a deeper understanding of the topic. This study thus helps healthcare researchers expand their baseline knowledge of these core determinants and conduct more fruitful future research on system-use behavior in healthcare.

Working Information Literacy : The Instruction Librarian Specialty In Job Advertisements, 1973-2013., Claudene Sproles, Robert Detmering
Faculty and Staff Scholarship
As information literacy has developed into one of the library profession‟s most important guiding principles, library instruction programs have increased in complexity and academic librarian job duties have expanded. This paper broadly tracks the evolution of information literacy instruction through an examination of select literature, as well as teaching-related requirements listed in select professional job advertisements published in ten-year increments from 1973-2013. These advertisements reflect the growing diversity of teaching-oriented positions appearing over time and the increasingly specialized nature of the required qualifications for those positions. The advertisements also demonstrate how information literacy continues to provide a conceptual rationale by …

Factors considered during decision-making and implementation are also reviewed.
The Ultimate Irony: An Information Age Without Librarians, Dawn S. Ady
The Ultimate Irony: An Information Age Without Librarians, Dawn S. Ady
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In this thesis, the continuing relevance of the profession of librarianship in the digital age is explored and assessed. After defining the library as information itself, the thesis establishes that electronic formats replacing printed matter is not an indication of libraries becoming extinct. Further, various aspects of the profession of librarianship—including library ethics, information extraction skills, and information literacy instruction—are discussed. Additionally, the potential for librarians to play an important role in a largely “jobless” society (as forecast by some experts and scholars as well as in a recent Oxford University study) is evaluated. Finally, a proposal is made for …

Libguides Two Ways: Teaching Information Literacy In And Out Of The Classroom, Lucinda Rush
Libraries Faculty & Staff Publications
Librarians at Old Dominion University (ODU) Libraries use the LibGuides platform in a creative way to meet immediate, practical needs. Traditionally, we have offered two types of information literacy tutorials. The first is a lengthy, module-based tutorial and is used in our information literacy-designated courses to cover skills in-depth and which students must complete over the course of a semester. The second is a short tutorial designed to give students an introduction or a refresher covering basic research skills, information literacy concepts, and library services.
Prior to migrating to a new web platform, ODU Libraries hosted short click-through tutorials on …

Social Influence And Organizational Innovation Characteristics On Enterprise Social Computing Adoption, Vincent Di Palermo
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Ample research has been conducted to identify the determinants of information technology (IT) adoption. No previous quantitative researchers have explored IT adoption in the context of enterprise social computing (ESC). The purpose of this study was to test and extend the social influence model of IT adoption. In addition, this study addressed a gap in the research literature and presented a model that relates the independent variables of social action, social consensus, social authority, social cooperation, perceived relative advantage, perceived compatibility, perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness, and organizational commitment to the dependent variables of social embracement and embedment. A …

Creative Connections: Engaging Students And Faculty Through A Library Artist In Residence, Alexandra Chappell
Creative Connections: Engaging Students And Faculty Through A Library Artist In Residence, Alexandra Chappell
Library Staff Publications and Research
It can be challenging to forge connections between an academic library and undergraduate art students, who are often heavily engaged in beginning studio practice and may only associate the library with the more traditional research done by other disciplines. One way to overcome this challenge is to change their perceptions of the library through programming that demonstrates that the library can be a site for exploration, inspiration, research, and innovation by artists. At the Claremont Colleges Library, we partnered with a member of the art faculty to create a Library Artist in Residence (LAIR) program, which has the twin goals …
