Gaps In Affiliation Indexing In Scopus And Pubmed., Cynthia M. Schmidt, Roxanne Cox, Alissa Fial, Teresa Hartman, Martha L. Magee

Journal Articles: Leon S. McGoogan Health Sciences Library

OBJECTIVE: The authors sought to determine whether unexpected gaps existed in Scopus's author affiliation indexing of publications written by the University of Nebraska Medical Center or Nebraska Medicine (UNMC/NM) authors during 2014.

METHODS: First, we compared Scopus affiliation identifier search results to PubMed affiliation keyword search results. Then, we searched Scopus using affiliation keywords (UNMC, etc.) and compared the results to PubMed affiliation keyword and Scopus affiliation identifier searches.

RESULTS: We found that Scopus's records for approximately 7% of UNMC/NM authors' publications lacked appropriate UNMC/NM author affiliation identifiers, and many journals' publishers were supplying incomplete author affiliation information to PubMed. …

You’Re In Good Company: Developing A Research Conference For Advanced Graduate Students In The Humanities, Brian Vetruba, Daria Carson-Dussan, Melissa Vetter

WashU Libraries Presentations

In 2014, librarians at Washington University in St. Louis developed an annual research conference for advanced graduate students in the Humanities. This conference was inspired by the desire to connect to graduate students at the dissertation stage as librarians had observed a gap in librarian-graduate student interactions between the first years of graduate school and when students embark on their own dissertation research. Librarians discovered that graduate students often struggle in isolation with similar research questions as well as project management and dissertation writing; thus, we aptly entitled the conference “You’re in Good Company: A Mini-Conference for Advanced Graduate Students …

Scripts In A Frame: A Framework For Archiving Deferred Representations, Justin F. Brunelle Apr 2016

Scripts In A Frame: A Framework For Archiving Deferred Representations, Justin F. Brunelle

Computer Science Theses & Dissertations

Web archives provide a view of the Web as seen by Web crawlers. Because of rapid advancements and adoption of client-side technologies like JavaScript and Ajax, coupled with the inability of crawlers to execute these technologies effectively, Web resources become harder to archive as they become more interactive. At Web scale, we cannot capture client-side representations using the current state-of-the art toolsets because of the migration from Web pages to Web applications. Web applications increasingly rely on JavaScript and other client-side programming languages to load embedded resources and change client-side state. We demonstrate that Web crawlers and other automatic archival …

Faculty and Staff Publications

As a way to enhance their educational experience and promote global citizenship, students in higher education are often expected to participate in activities beyond the walls of their universities. These activities may include study abroad, internships, service learning projects, and much more. While these activities can take place far from the university setting, they also often occur in the university’s local community, where our students work or volunteer at local businesses, nonprofit organizations, and service agencies. These students bring their real world projects to their course work, where libraries and librarians engage with them to find real world solutions using …

24/7 Library Hours At An Urban Commuter College, Maureen Richards Mar 2016

24/7 Library Hours At An Urban Commuter College, Maureen Richards

Urban Library Journal

Historically, academic libraries have not provided their users with any form of 24-hour access. The evidence today is that many do. This article discusses the results of a survey of students using the library at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, which in the Spring 2014 began offering 24/7 library access during the final exam period. The objective was to gather demographic information about the users and get a better understanding of the reason for their visit. The data collected helps explain what might be driving the trend to extend hours, particularly as many library resources are available 24/7 electronically …

The Issues Of Chronology In Cataloging Chinese Archaeological Reports And Related Materials: An Investigation Of The Cultural Bias In The Library Of Congress Classification And Subject Headings, Junli Diao, Haiyun Cao

Publications and Research

This article discusses peculiarities of Chinese chronology in cataloging Chinese archaeological reports and related materials. It first examines cultural limitations embedded in the Eurocentric Library of Congress Classification (LCC) and calls for catalogers’ sensitivity to authors’ cultural background while cataloging the Bronze China archaeological materials. It then discusses the ambiguity in Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) Manual H1225 and presents a debate on the necessity of including Chinese dynastic information in constructing subject headings through the comparison of facets extracted in this manual and elements derived from title patterns of Chinese archaeological reports. Furthermore, this article elaborates the significance …

Students performing research in higher education, especially at the undergraduate level, is a progressively dazzling task in the universe of digital and print resources. Using sound pedagogy to create student confidence in approaching research, hand in hand with creating scholarship, is a challenge tackled well by librarians and teaching faculty together.

We will discuss three theories and their place in research methods, using ACRL’sFramework for Information Literacy as context. First, Mezirow’s Transformative Learning Theory. Second, Perry’s Epistemology of Learning: moving a student’s absolute belief in all things defined by authority toward a belief in his own values and …

Librarians And Student Affairs Professionals As Collaborators For Student Learning And Success, Dallas Long Mar 2016

Librarians And Student Affairs Professionals As Collaborators For Student Learning And Success, Dallas Long

Theses and Dissertations

Increased accountability in higher education is increasingly compelling librarians to demonstrate their impact on student learning and student success. To do so, they are encouraged to collaborate with student affairs professionals to improve students' experiences. However, the literature suggests librarians lack formal, structured partnerships with student affairs professionals, and that librarians and student affairs professionals are largely unfamiliar with each other's roles in student learning. They may have narrow or inaccurate perceptions of each other, and lack meaningful ways to collaborate. This study explored librarians' and student affairs professionals' perceptions of each other's roles in student learning and success. Additionally, …

Connecting Pedagogies: Service Learning And Information Literacy Accelerate Impact, Jennifer E. Nutefall, Alex Hodges

Staff publications, research, and presentations

Librarians can play an important role in supporting service learning initiatives and administrators in making informed use of the knowledge resources available to them. Presenters will outline how the pedagogy that underlies service learning also foregrounds the pedagogy that occurs in library-based research instruction, otherwise known as information literacy. Attendees will learn how to connect service learning and information literacy through the use of the Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education. This framework can serve as an important tool for: designing campus resources that can impact community welfare; creating environments of collaboration across the education continuum; and appraising the …
