A Black Art: Ontology, Data, And The Tower Of Babel Problem, Andrew J. Iliadis
A Black Art: Ontology, Data, And The Tower Of Babel Problem, Andrew J. Iliadis
Open Access Dissertations
Computational ontologies are a new type of emerging scientific media (Smith, 2016) that process large quantities of heterogeneous data about portions of reality. Applied computational ontologies are used for semantically integrating (Heiler, 1995; Pileggi & Fernandez-Llatas, 2012) divergent data to represent reality and in so doing applied computational ontologies alter conceptions of materiality and produce new realities based on levels of informational granularity and abstraction (Floridi, 2011), resulting in a new type of informational ontology (Iliadis, 2013) the critical analysis of which requires new methods and frameworks. Currently, there is a lack of literature addressing the theoretical, social, and critical …

New Journals For Publishing Medical Case Reports, Katherine G. Akers Phd
Library Scholarly Publications
Because they do not rank highly in the hierarchy of evidence and are not frequently cited, case reports describing the clinical circumstances of single patients are seldom published by medical journals. However, many clinicians argue that case reports have significant educational value, advance medical knowledge, and complement evidence-based medicine. Over the last several years, a vast number (~160) of new peer-reviewed journals have emerged that focus on publishing case reports. These journals are typically open access and have relatively high acceptance rates. However, approximately half of the publishers of case reports journals engage in questionable or "predatory" publishing practices. Authors …

One-To-Many: Building A Single-Search Interface For Disparate Resources, Cole Hudson, Graham Hukill
Library Scholarly Publications
Libraries provide access to a complex array of resources, but it comes as little surprise that many struggle with this task. The ubiquity of Google in modern research has placed libraries in the position of trying to emulate or set themselves apart from the search engine, regardless of how appropriate it is to compare libraries to Google. There are numerous ways in which libraries can improve the search and discovery experience for patrons, and for many, this improvement currently comes in the form of custom-built or commercial discovery systems—which aggregate disparate library content into a single results display. But, regardless …

Personal Communication Networks And Their Positive Effects On Online Collaboration And Outcome Quality On Wikipedia, Michail Tsikerdekis
Personal Communication Networks And Their Positive Effects On Online Collaboration And Outcome Quality On Wikipedia, Michail Tsikerdekis
Information Science Faculty Publications
Online collaborative projects have been utilized in a variety of ways over the past decade, such as bringing people together to build open source software or developing the world's largest free encyclopedia. Personal communication networks as a feature do not exist in all collaborative projects. It is currently unclear if a designer's decision to include a personal communication network in a collaborative project's structure affects outcome quality. In this study, I investigated Wikipedia's personal communication network and analyzed which Wikipedia editors are utilizing it and how they are connected to outcome quality. Evidence suggests that people who utilize these networks …
Intellectual Freedom And Freedom Of Speech: Three Theoretical Perspectives, Shannon M. Oltmann
Intellectual Freedom And Freedom Of Speech: Three Theoretical Perspectives, Shannon M. Oltmann
Information Science Faculty Publications
Freedom of speech encompasses not only a right to express oneself but also a right to access information. This right is particularly pertinent to libraries, whose mission is often focused on enabling and expanding access to information. Libraries can support this activity with a theoretical background that draws upon the three predominant jurisprudential theories of freedom of speech: the marketplace of ideas, democratic ideals, and individual autonomy. In this article, each of these theories is explained and then applied to the library context, creating a starting place for further investigation and application of these judicial theories to information access.

How To Find A Particular Article Or Journal In A Library Database: Using The E-Journal Portal, John A. Drobnicki
How To Find A Particular Article Or Journal In A Library Database: Using The E-Journal Portal, John A. Drobnicki
Publications and Research
In most cases, the research process begins with a topic: one types some keywords into a database or search engine, gets a result list, selects appropriate/reliable/useful articles, and is (hopefully) satisfied. But what happens if you already know what you’re looking for, because you have an exact citation? Or if you are looking for a specific journal that you would like to browse? How do you know which journal is included in which database? The author discusses the York College Library's e-journal portal, a subscription product from Serials Solutions.

Exploring How Problem Solving In Technology-Rich Environments Can Be Used To Design Responsive Programming, Jill Castek, Amy Honisett
Presentations and Publications
This session explored a project that assesses community members’ digital skills using Education and Skills Online (ESO) – a valid and reliable assessment tool based on PIAAC that addresses Literacy, Numeracy, and Problem Solving in Technology Rich Environments (PS-TRE). The project will use these data to determine how the abilities of patrons map to the common library tasks that libraries assume patrons are able to access and use in a meaningful way.

Understanding Academic Patrons’ Data Needs Through Virtual Reference Transcripts: Preliminary Findings From New York University Libraries, Margaret Smith, Jill Conte, Samantha Guss
University Libraries Faculty and Staff Publications
New York University (NYU) Libraries has an extremely high-volume chat reference service. This popularity presents a unique opportunity for gaining insight into library patrons’ conceptualizations of their data reference needs and how these needs are changing. Through analysis of three years’ worth of chat transcripts, we began to explore user needs and familiarity related to locating secondary data and statistics, performing data analysis, and using existing data services. Ultimately, we focused our analysis on requests for census data. This article discusses, in detail, the methods, preliminary results, limitations, and proposed next steps of our investigation. Our final goal is to …
