The Influence Of The Online Availability Of Usgs Topographic Maps On Weeding Decisions In Academic Libraries, Cheri A. Folkner, Mary C. Aagard Apr 2016

The Influence Of The Online Availability Of Usgs Topographic Maps On Weeding Decisions In Academic Libraries, Cheri A. Folkner, Mary C. Aagard

Library Faculty Publications and Presentations

This study looked at the degree to which the online availability of U.S. Geological Survey historical topographic maps affects academic libraries’ decisions to withdraw the print versions of those maps. Other factors in making the decisions, such as usage, user preferences, support of academic programs, user discovery, shelving location, and printing options, were also investigated. Results show that while in 40% of the cases the online USGS historical topographic maps influenced the decision to weed, the need for space was the overwhelming driver of print USGS topographic map collection weeding within the past ten years.

A Survey Of Children’S And Young Adult Literature Collections In Academic Libraries Of Christian Higher Education, Shan Martinez, Melissa D. Atkinson Apr 2016

A Survey Of Children’S And Young Adult Literature Collections In Academic Libraries Of Christian Higher Education, Shan Martinez, Melissa D. Atkinson

Library Research and Publications

Children's and young adult literature collections have an important place in an academic library. Most often, these collections go unnoticed by many in academia, who may regard children's literature as irrelevant to the mission of the academic library. In reality, these important collections support institutional curriculum and include interdisciplinary resources used in many academic departments. Findings are reported of a survey conducted of private Christian colleges and universities regarding their management of children's and young adult literature collections which seeks to identify current practices and procedures being utilized. Results from the survey highlight use, promotion, and management.

Mobile Web Site Ease Of Use: An Analysis Of Orbis Cascade Alliance Member Web Sites, Zebulin Evelhoch Apr 2016

Mobile Web Site Ease Of Use: An Analysis Of Orbis Cascade Alliance Member Web Sites, Zebulin Evelhoch

Library Scholarship

This paper analyzes 37 Orbis Cascade Alliance members’ websites to determine ease of use across mobile devices. Based on that analysis and a literature review, guidance is provided on how libraries’ mobile websites may be improved. Websites were examined to determine ease of locating frequently accessed resources on mobile devices that were identified in the literature: contact information, hours, databases, library accounts, and search boxes. Scalability of websites on mobile devices was also evaluated and was found to be non-existent in nearly a quarter of examined libraries. Areas for consideration and improvement are presented across Orbis Cascade Alliance libraries that …

"The Sugar'd Game Before Thee": Gamification Revisited, Michael J. Hughes, Jeff Lacy Apr 2016

"The Sugar'd Game Before Thee": Gamification Revisited, Michael J. Hughes, Jeff Lacy

Library Faculty Research

Gamification, the application of game elements to nongame contexts, was recently a subject of great interest in the library literature, inspiring a number of articles. That interest tapered off in tandem with gamification’s wider decline, but signs point to its reemergence. Anticipating renewed interest in gamification, the authors reviewed the literature to determine what has—and has not—been examined by librarianship’s proponents of gamification. They found serious concerns regarding gamification’s practical and ethical limitations. Moreover, the authors believe that the purported benefits of gamification are more readily found in its progenitor—games.

If You Build It, Will They Come? Collateral Benefits Of Changing Strategies To Facilitate Faculty Participation In A Campus Ir, Lindsay Van Berkom, Elaine M. Lasda Bergman

University Libraries Faculty Scholarship

In October, 2014, the University at Albany Libraries launched Scholars Archive (SA), the University’s Institutional Repository (IR). Our first year of trial and error generated mixed results and low participation by non-library faculty. In year two, we redeveloped our strategy to yield benefits beyond simply increasing repository content. The new approach has three prongs: targeting outreach to deans, department heads and campus wide meetings instead of targeting to individual faculty members; second, we now provide a “full service” model for submitting content instead of merely mediating a “self-service” workflow model; third, we strategically highlight the IR platform’s available metrics to …
