A History And Analysis Of Cala's Social Media, Sai Deng, Xiao Hu Jun 2016

A History And Analysis Of Cala's Social Media, Sai Deng, Xiao Hu

Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Under the rapid development of social media and social networking sites, a number of social media channels have been deeply integrated into people's professional and private lives. The Chinese American Librarians Association (CALA), started its social media presence in 2012 with Facebook, and then expanded to YouTube and WeChat. While CALA's Facebook and YouTube channel are more public and social platforms for its news, announcements and documents, its WeChat group is more of an informal space for sharing news and embarking discussions. This poster will look into the various aspects of these social media channels and provide statistical and textual …

A Virtuous Circle Of Student Engagement: The Tech Corner, Brian R. Schuck, Susan B. Wainscott

Library Faculty Presentations

How can a culture of student innovation and interdisciplinary creativity be fostered when library facilities and / or budget do not accommodate a maker space? We allowed students to help develop a new collection of devices and equipment, the Tech Corner, launched in early 2016. We seek to provide ready access to unique, easy-to-use devices that support creativity, curricular work and recreation but may be too expensive for our average student to purchase. Student focus groups helped design the branding, marketing, and a starter collection of items that include virtual reality headsets, digital art brushes, tablet-compatible MIDI keyboards, digital microscopes, …

Library I.T.: Information Technologists Or Information Thought-Leaders?, Craig A. Boman, Whitni Watkins

Roesch Library Staff Presentations

Library staff employed in information technology departments are often seen as support staff, only providing services when something breaks. But what more can library IT staff do to support the mission of their libraries? In this presentation we will explore why library IT staff should maximize their ability to work across various library departments to collaboratively design new library services rather than being relegated to support staff. We will also explore how library IT staff may challenge traditional bureaucratic organization structures to lead change efforts.

Collaborating Across Departments For Image Metadata, Courtenay Mcleland

Library Faculty Presentations & Publications

The Digital Projects & Preservation Department and the Discovery Enhancement Department, each within the Technical Services Division of the Thomas G. Carpenter Library, have collaborated to ensure that metadata is embedded in image-based collections in the institutional repository. Our initial project is nearly complete and now we have begun a second. The first project utilized freeware so that staff members in Discovery Enhancement, who did not have access to the Adobe Suite, could embed metadata and geographic coordinates. Now that a campus-wide agreement has provided access to Adobe Photoshop Lightroom, members of the team can apply metadata using presets and …

Shut Up And Listen: How One Academic Library Used Social Listening To Connect With Students And Build A Community, Maria Atilano Jun 2016

Shut Up And Listen: How One Academic Library Used Social Listening To Connect With Students And Build A Community, Maria Atilano

Library Faculty Presentations & Publications

Marketing consultant and social media expert Chris Brogan once wrote: "[Social listening] is the closest thing to printing money that I can tell you about." While social media and networking tools such as Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram are often used by organizations to communicate information to their constituents, the real return on investment comes from listening. Over the past two years, the University of North Florida's Thomas G. Carpenter Library has used its social media presence (@unflibrary) to listen and then engage with students. This practice has led the Carpenter Library to build a reliable, friendly, and helpful online community …

Get The Eteam, Stat! Managing Era Troubleshooting Triage Tier By Tier, Jeffrey M. Mortimore

University Libraries: Faculty Presentations

Triage of electronic resource access (ERA) troubleshooting takes planning and rarely is straightforward. Who reported the problem? How visible is it? How long will it take to resolve and who is involved? Without a good triage plan, ERA troubleshooting can spin out of control fast.

This poster session will present a three-part tiering scheme for performing triage on ERA troubleshooting requests reported to the eTeam, the ERA response team at Georgia Southern University in Statesboro, GA. This framework evaluates requests in terms of 1) origin, scope and urgency of request; 2) required stakeholder input to resolve the request; and 3) …

Web-Scale Discovery: Impact On Library Database Web Page Views And Usage, Zebulin Evelhoch

Library Scholarship

Web page views of databases by title and databases by subject pages, in conjunction with COUNTER Database Report 1 and Journal Report 1 statistics, were examined to determine what impact a migration to Primo, a Web-scale discovery layer, had at Central Washington University Brooks Library. The analysis determined that the first year post-migration (2015) compared to the two years pre-migration (2013–14) saw a decline in Web page views of database Web pages, journal full-text article requests, and database record views and result clicks. The implementation of Primo thus had a noticeable negative impact on both direct database access and overall …

Strategies For Engaging In International Librarianship: Misconceptions And Opportunities, Melanie Sellar Jun 2016

Strategies For Engaging In International Librarianship: Misconceptions And Opportunities, Melanie Sellar

School of Information Student Research Journal

Higher education institutions are increasingly formalizing internationalization priorities into their strategic plans. As a result library and information science (LIS) programs are beginning to encourage the inclusion of more international perspectives in student experiences. One means of doing so is by drawing upon international librarianship (IL), an LIS field of study since the 1950s. However, IL is a relatively small field that is not understood well. In order for IL to be studied, practiced, and funded in ways that are appropriate to its potential, this essay revisits the concept of IL, discusses some of its misconceptions, and advocates for more …

Open Access Metadata For Journals In Directory Of Open Access Journals: Who, How, And What Scheme?, Lisa E. Cheby

School of Information Student Research Journal

Open access (OA) is a form of publication that allows some level of free access to scholarly publications. The Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) is a repository to which OA journals may apply and upload content to increase discoverability. OA also refers to metadata that is freely available for harvesting. In making metadata open access, standards for schemes and protocols are needed to facilitate interoperability. For open access journals, such as those listed in the DOAJ, providing open access metadata in a form that promotes interoperability is essential for discoverability of their content. This paper investigates what standards exist …

Authenticity Key To Success In Life And In Legal Information, Susan Drisko Zago Jun 2016

Authenticity Key To Success In Life And In Legal Information, Susan Drisko Zago

Law Faculty Scholarship

[Excerpt] "Authenticity is defined as something that is not false or an imitation. Savvy consumers pay a premium for an authentic product and treat with suspicion a product that does not ring true.

We have a system of trademark and copyright protections that protect a company’s intellectual property rights and brands and consumer protections to protect the consumer from counterfeit and unsafe products. Now, there is model legislation that will provide a systematic way to protect, preserve and provide better electronic access to the bread and butter of our legal profession: our official state legal documents."

Transformations: From Social Media Campaign To Scholarly Paper, Hilary Yerbury, Ahmed Shahid Jun 2016

Transformations: From Social Media Campaign To Scholarly Paper, Hilary Yerbury, Ahmed Shahid

Proceedings from the Document Academy

This paper takes up the challenge given at the 2015 meeting of the Document Academy to explore relationships between the conference paper being presented and the social media campaign on which it was based. Using Genette’s notion of transtextuality, through which he shows that all published texts are networked to other texts, and Frohmann’s argument that our understanding of a document and the justification of that understanding are to be found in the “the stories we tell”, the report of the exploration describes the way that the relationships between the two emerge from the links created between the content of …

“Windows” Of Time: Memory, Metaphor, And Storytelling As Documents, Lynnsey K. Weissenberger Jun 2016

“Windows” Of Time: Memory, Metaphor, And Storytelling As Documents, Lynnsey K. Weissenberger

Proceedings from the Document Academy

This paper describes how alternative documents – memory, metaphor, and storytelling – negotiate musicians’ ongoing process of knowledge building. Examples are drawn from five music practitioners of different traditions around the world. In the contexts of teaching and learning, these documents provide evidence of changing epistemic perspectives in these music practitioners, and can be used to examine the complex relationships between time, knowledge building, and experience. Recent work in oral information and oral documents by Turner (2007; 2010), in addition to conceptual views of documents and documentation as early as Otlet (1934) and Briet (1951) and revisited by Buckland (1991; …

The Document: A Multiple Concept, Sabine Roux Jun 2016

The Document: A Multiple Concept, Sabine Roux

Proceedings from the Document Academy

This paper discusses the concept of the document evolved throughout the 20th century in France, particularly through the writings of Robert Escarpit and Jean Meyriat. The document began as a simple notion and then gradually took on new meanings such that it is now seen as a construction of social values. Multiplicity is posited as a fundamental characteristic of the document, which affects its meaning, its interpretation and its social values. Like a rhizome, the document circulates in social spaces with multiple, nomadic associations through attribution, intention, meaning, interpretations and social values (political issues, artistic and aesthetic dimensions, economy, etc.) …

Jungles, Rabbit Holes, And Wonderlands: Comparing Conceptions Of Museality And Document, Kiersten F. Latham

Proceedings from the Document Academy

Following from the Document Academy 2012 presentation of a similar name, this article commits to paper the beginnings of an exploration between the concepts around document (from neo-documentation studies) and museality (from museum studies). It will serve as an initial mechanism for the exploration into the history, use, and comparative usefulness of the terms in order to blaze a path towards organizing their relationship and potential use in practice. The article is a purposefully open-ended exploration that encourages feedback and suggestions.

The Documentality Of Ethics – Codes Of Library Ethics As Support Of Professional Practice, Joacim Hansson Jun 2016

The Documentality Of Ethics – Codes Of Library Ethics As Support Of Professional Practice, Joacim Hansson

Proceedings from the Document Academy

This study analyzes codes of ethics, seen as documents, and their role in supporting the professional practice of librarianship. Theoretically it is placed within the scholarly discussion on the role and function of documents in various practices. Specific interest is directed towards the concept of ”performative documentality”. Empirically, the analysis is concentrated on one example, the Code of Ethics of the American Library Association (ALA). Both the immediate pre-history of this code, and its subsequent editions are described and analyzed in relation to the given theoretical position. Results show that the development ALA code of ethics corresponds to the ideas …

Sense In Documentary Reference: Documentation, Literature, And The Post-Documentary Perspective, Ronald E. Day Jun 2016

Sense In Documentary Reference: Documentation, Literature, And The Post-Documentary Perspective, Ronald E. Day

Proceedings from the Document Academy

Reference in modern documentation is largely governed by theories of evidential representation by documents, as the ‘contents’ of documents. In contrast, newer, what I call ‘post-documentary,’ technologies more emphasize the role of sense in the creation of reference. This paper investigates the implications upon the modernist category of ‘documentation’ and ‘document’ when this shift is taken into account. It also examines the implications upon ‘literature’ as a modernist category that evolved toward contesting modern documentation in the creation of evidence.
