Marketing And Development For Libraries, A Luxury Or A Necessity?, Essraa Nawar
Library Presentations, Posters, and Audiovisual Materials
For many libraries across the world, marketing, development and fundraising can be dirty words and if you add outreach people do not even get it. In this poster, the presenter will prove why libraries across the globe should embrace marketing, outreach and development for what they are, and let outreach spread and be part of our daily routine in libraries. Just like corporations and start-up, libraries of all kinds need to invest time; energy and resources on their marketing and development strategies. By applying some of these techniques, libraries will not just be able to better understand their users’ needs …

The Lived Experiences Of Women In The Information Technology Field As They Transition From One Leadership Level To The Next: A Phenomenological Study, Marilyn Delmont
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
There is an increasing disparity of women in the IT field, when compared to men, specifically within IT executive leadership roles. The number of women in IT executive leadership lags drastically behind men IT executives and has gone down by five percent since 2008. Despite significant growth in the IT field women are not growing with it. IT jobs are expected to increase by 1.5 million in the next decade. The purpose and central question of this qualitative phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences of women and how they develop as IT leaders. Beginning with 19 broad questions, …

Northwest Coast Native American Art: The Relationship Between Museums, Native Americans And Artists, Karrie E. Myers
Museum Studies Theses
Museums today have many responsibilities, including protecting and understanding objects in their care. Many also have relationships with groups of people whose items or artworks are housed within their institutions. This paper explores the relationship between museums and Northwest Coast Native Americans and their artists. Participating museums include those in and out of the Northwest Coast region, such as the Museum of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia, the Burke Museum, the Royal British Columbia Museum, the American Museum of Natural History and the Smithsonian Museum. Museum professionals who conducted research for some of these museums included Franz Boas, …
To Submit, Click Here: Teaching Novice Undergraduate And Graduate Researchers The Submission And Revision Steps Of The Publication Process Via The Institutional Repository, Jonathan Bull
Library Faculty Presentations
For undergraduate and graduate students aiming to transition into formalized researcher roles, learning the steps of the publication process can be difficult and unclear. Even with sound advice from mentor faculty members, learning academic publishing practices many times relies heavily on word-of-mouth and unwritten rules. Using a modified version of content submission and peer-review options within the institutional repository, Valparaiso University’s Christopher Center for Library and Information Resources (CCLIR) formed partnerships to teach these emerging scholars about the steps in the publication and conference presentation processes by mimicking professional submission and revision practices online. Two specific examples of this new …

Using Interlibrary Loan To Strengthen Regional Library Collections, Kate Ross, Kourtney Blackburn, Michael Mulligan
Lavery Library Faculty/Staff Publications
Academic libraries in New York State have benefited from Coordinated Collection Development Aid (CCDA), meant to support resource sharing, since 1981. In recent years, dwindling academic library budgets have increased the need to utilize funds effectively and reduce unnecessary duplication across physical library collections. Patrons already benefit from the connection between resource sharing and collection development, where ILL is important and shared collections are valued. A need existed to connect the dots between library collection development and resource sharing cooperatives, where the strength of resource sharing groups is the strength of the combined, diversified collections of its members. The presentation …

Navigating The Institutional Review Board For Librarianship Research, Carolyn Schubert
Navigating The Institutional Review Board For Librarianship Research, Carolyn Schubert
Libraries
Librarians are encountering more opportunities to conduct original research and contribute to evidence based practices, but only 26% believe they have the educational training to conduct these tasks (Kennedy & Brancolini, 2012). One key step in this process is navigating an Institutional Review Board (IRB) to assure participants are treated in an ethical manner. What does it mean to protect research participants today? What does an IRB look for? What tips, tricks, and best practices can save you time with this process? Discussion of these questions and more are the focus of this webinar.

Criss Library Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
The Queer Omaha Archives, in Criss Library Archives & Special Collections at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, preserves and provides access to the history of LGBTQIA+ life in the region. The archives collects, preserves, and makes available to the public material documenting the diverse people and organizations of the greater Omaha region and their experiences and work. In this session, we’ll share how this new community collecting initiative was begun and how the library is extending existing and establishing new relationships with campus and community members to preserve the region’s LGBTQIA+ history and make it available for use.

Blogging the Library
This summer, as the Smith Intern at Special Collections, I was tasked with working on a hodge-podge of assembled documents, previously referred to as the “18th Century Document” collection. The box’s contents had been around for just about as long as anyone could remember, and really only got exposure for the Revolutionary War classes that had class sessions through Special Collections. Yet, as I browsed through the collection (which was really a small assemblage of papers), the box was much more than a Revolution collection. [excerpt]

An Olympic Ode To Cataloging, Maureen E. Schlangen
Roesch Library Staff Publications
When my colleagues in the University Libraries gathered on the west portico of Roesch Library June 9 for our own version of the Olympics, our competitive nature, mostly dormant in our daily work, emerged in events that put our teams to the test both physically and mentally: journal Jenga, journal toss, cart racing, book balancing, speed sorting and the hardest scavenger hunt I’ve ever participated in.
But like many things I’ve discovered in my two years in the Libraries, the information science that inspired these trivial games is anything but trivial.
As I raced to put a cart full of …

Blogging the Library
I had not met Michael Ritterson before he visited the Conservation Lab at Special Collections, where he was having a book mended, but I had certainly heard of him. A former faculty member of the German department, Mr. Ritterson is now a German translator, taking on projects from translating the work of a 17th German woman’s study of butterflies to the poetry of a Berlin leftist written during the 1968 Movement. And, by previous contact in the mail, he had heard of me. So after Mary Wooton showed him the fully repaired book, we were formally introduced and had the …

A group of 16, mostly librarians, met in the Archives Reading Room of City College Library on Friday, June 17, 2016. The format of our meeting was an unconference, which means the conversations were driven by the concerns of the participants. I have no doubt that anyone who reads this document will come away with different impressions. The ideas that jumped out at me include learning a lot more about universal design for learning. Be aware that phones can be used in the classroom as assistive technology. Consider doing a usability study of library resources in concert with students with …

Developing A Campus-Wide Research Lifecycle: Perspectives From The University Of Central Florida Libraries, Lee Dotson, Sarah A. Norris
Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Librarians at the University of Central Florida created their Research Lifecycle (RLC) to illustrate the research process, highlight campus-wide support services, and identify unmet needs. This session will explore the development of the RLC model, provide an in-depth analysis of the graphic that was created, and explain how the RLC contributed to the developing Scholarly Communication model at UCF. The speakers will also review the steps taken to vet the RLC with faculty and other campus units and emphasize other outcomes such as building stronger relationships with key partners, as well as highlighting spinoff projects. A broad assessment will illustrate …
