Two and a half decades into the open access (OA) movement, rapid changes in scholarly communication are creating significant demands on scholars. Today’s scholars must wrestle with meeting funder mandates for providing public access to their research, managing and preserving raw data, establishing/publishing open access journals, understanding the difference between “green OA” and “gold OA,” navigating the complicated issues around copyright and intellectual property, avoiding potentially predatory publishers, adapting their tenure plans to OA, and discovering increasing amounts of OA resources for their research and their curricular materials. As academic law librarians, we should all be concerned with identifying whether our students are meeting AALL’s Principles and Standards for Legal Research Competency. I was excited to attend this session on Creative Assessment so that I could learn new ways in which librarians can evaluate their students to see if they are adequately trained in these core competencies. The panelists were Pamela Rogers Melton, Associate Director for Administration at the University of South Carolina, Gail Partin, Interim Director at the Dickinson School of Law Library, and Barbara Gabor, Senior Research and Reference Specialist at WilmerHale.

Re-Thinking Information Literacy Instruction With The Acrl Framework, Judith Arnold, Veronica E. Bielat

As academic librarians transition from a teaching and learning paradigm for Information Literacy (IL) that is reliant on the ACRL Competency Standards to the new ACRL Framework, how can librarians support and learn from each other as a community during this transition? This program will share the examples of reframing successful, standards-based IL instruction for two discipline-focused research assignments to a framework-based approach. Attendees will participate in a hands-on activity that helps them strategize how to re-think existing instruction to integrate the threshold concepts into instruction, and discuss options for assessing student learning as part of a new instruction paradigm.

Publications and Research

The Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education, since their publication in 2000, have drawn criticism for ignoring the social and political aspects of information literacy. The ACRL Information Literacy Competency Standards Task Force responded with the Framework for Information Literacy in Higher Education, which rethinks information literacy by acknowledging that it is a social phenomenon and by recognizing students as participatory learners. This article contrasts the constructions of information, information literacy, and students in the Framework and the Standards to show how the Framework addresses some of the critiques of the Standards.

Introduction

The Himmelfarb Health Sciences Library, at The George Washington University, introduced Health Information @ Himmelfarb, a custom health sciences focused implementation of EBSCO’s Discovery Service (EDS) in the fall of 2012. Less than a year later, the Library Catalog was migrated to Innovative’s Encore. With two different discovery tools delivering some overlapping content and features, librarians wanted to know more about how the two services were being used.

Methods

Himmelfarb Library Faculty Posters and Presentations

The launch of the revised medical school curriculum in Fall 2014 provided new opportunities for librarians to collaborate with clinical faculty. As a result of our past informatics instruction embedded in the first year curriculum, we were invited to expand this content as part of a new formative Objective Structured Clinical Examination (FOSCE) initiative. Two reference librarians worked closely with faculty to develop original case-based scenarios that were taught by a team of six reference librarians over the course of a year.

University Libraries: Faculty Presentations

The institutional repository Digital Commons@Georgia Southern launched in Fall 2013. Faculty immediately began to utilize the services including journals/conferences sites and SelectedWorks faculty profiles. The repository also sparked an unexpected success: collaboration between the Zach S. Henderson Library and the Office of Research. The Office of Research created an Expertise Search and purchased Plum Analytics, two services that integrate with SelectedWorks profiles. The Expertise Search is a tool for users to find faculty members by expertise keywords. Plum Analytics provides faculty with traditional metrics (citations) as well as altmetrics (usage, captures, mentions, and social media). Through these tools, the Henderson …

Library Faculty and Staff Publications and Presentations

In the context of rapid change in social work practice related to policy, research findings, and theoretical developments, faculty are challenged to prepare students to engage in lifelong learning, a concept that has not been well-articulated in social work education. This article reports on an exploratory study of students,' social workers,' and field instructors' perspectives and experiences of lifelong learning. Based on focus group discussions, findings reveal the multi-faceted nature of lifelong learning, the personal characteristics and motivations of lifelong learners, and the roles of social work faculty and workplace environments in supporting learning.
