Typical discussions of academic library resource sharing focus on activities between and among institutions: interlibrary loan, reciprocal borrowing, document delivery, group acquisitions, etc. But there is another equally important type of cooperation, i.e. working with other campus units to provide better service, more convenience, and enhanced resources for library users. Sometimes referred to as campus collaboration or convergence, this activity also advances institutional priorities, in particular that of student success. Library partners include information technology services, student development, writing centers, academic departments, and centers for teaching excellence, among others. Archives and “the archives” are culturally-specific places and materials. In the same way, both individual archivists and users of archives are situated in specific, often different, contexts of culture and identity. Archives are also spaces where researchers encounter sources for creating history. Thus, as both archival professionals and users of archival material, the meanings we construct for ourselves through understanding our past can be thought of as being constantly generated in the ever-changing spaces within and across archival sources, where individual donors, archivists, and researchers, archival professional standards, daily practical needs, and repositories’ organizational missions interact and interrelate. Increasingly, librarians have been engaged in discussions of the disconnect between the content covered in LIS education and the skills required to successfully navigate the first several years of work as a library professional (Andersen, 2002; Westbrock & Fabien, 2010). Mentoring has proven to be an important avenue for newly-degreed professionals to transition into the professional environment and bridge the gap between education and practice (Hallam & Newton-Smith, 2006). While examining the existing literature, a clear divide emerges between discussions of mentoring programs and mentoring relationships. Open Access And Irs: Educating And Empowering The Campus Community, Adam N. Hess

Library Faculty Scholarship

With the trend moving toward universities developing their own institutional repositories (IRs), the need to educate and empower the campus to embrace this new space for publishing research has grown exponentially. This session will provide a background on open access and IRs, including the many benefits and complex issues, as well as an overview of the scholarly communication crisis and the importance of authors’ rights education. The session will go on to provide practical examples and guidance from several pilot projects launched at Arcadia University that emphasized open access education and participation.

Finding “Diversity Levers” In The Core Library And Information Science Curriculum: A Social Justice Imperative, Kafi D. Kumasi, Nichole Manlove

School of Information Sciences Faculty Research Publications

In this exploratory study, the researchers examined the core library and information science (LIS) curriculum, looking for diversity levers, or conceptual access points, where transformative academic knowledge related to diversity and social justice could be meaningfully integrated. Multicultural curriculum reform, conceptualized as a social justice approach, was the guiding framework for the research design and analysis. The researchers began by establishing what constitutes the core curriculum and essential knowledge taught across thirty-six ALA-accredited master’s of library and information science degree programs. These data were then used to construct a survey that went to one hundred LIS faculty at ALA institutions …

A New Iris: Better Integration Of Research Outputs And Tracking Of Research Impact, Pin Pin Yeo

SMU moved from an in-house research publications solution to a commercial solution with integrated workflows for research management. The Library is the module lead for the Publications Module. The new Integrated Research Information System (IRIS) went live with the Publication Module as the first module in July 2015. The presentation covers the features of the new IRIS, the challenges of going live with the module, the benefits of the new IRIS. IRIS comes with new functionalities and integration with Scopus, Web of Science, and SherpaRomeo. This gave the Library opportunities to improve workflows, to review the system, to put in …

The purpose of this study was to explore the characteristics of a previously identified successful school library program (SLMP) in a Connecticut public school. The primary goals of this research are to answer these questions by conducting a single case study to examine the nature of this previously identified SLMP so that promising practices identified from this study can be applied to other SLMPs in Connecticut public schools. The data collection methods embodied both qualitative and quantitative instruments that included surveys, interviews and documents.
