Circulation Policies In Major Academic Libraries, Duane E Wilson, Cynthia Frazier, Diana Harter

Faculty Publications

As part of an assessment of its patron circulation policies, Brigham Young University's Harold B. Lee Library Circulation Committee studied the circulation policies of ARL members and like-sized academic institution's libraries. Access Services Department Heads or their equivalent at 165 academic libraries were surveyed. This paper reports on policies relating to circulation, renewals, fines, and recalls for these libraries. The majority of circulation policies are traditional (typical circulation periods, low numbers of renewals and traditional fines), though non-traditional policies (longer circulation periods, more renewals, and elimination of fines) provide better service and satisfaction for patrons. The allure of passing an institutional open-access (OA) policy as a strategy to populate an institutional repository is clear. After all, educating faculty to retain their rights to their scholarly publications through passage of such a policy, then requiring them to make those publications available through an IR seems a sure path to success. However, this approach of “if you pass it, they will comply” rings eerily similar to the early and decidedly misplaced optimism of populating institutional repositories through a “build it and they will come” proposition (Salo, 2007). While there is a rich literature about how academic faculty manage to balance work and family life, there is a surprising paucity of research centered on academic librarianship and motherhood. In this phenomenological study based on interviews, the lived experiences of 21 librarians who are also mothers of young children are explored. Six themes focused on the benefits and rewards of combining librarianship and motherhood emerge.

Internet-based technology has birthed a variety of ebook acquisition modes that differ significantly in number of accessible titles per acquisition dollar. We review these acquisition modes and argue that it is crucial for libraries to define a well-reasoned, comprehensive acquisition strategy that represents their optimal mix of all six modes. Each library’s strategy should reflect its institutional priorities relative to five key factors (choice of content and quality, discount, ease of use, permanence, and cost predictability) and integrate three complementary tactics (relating to subscription, demand-driven acquisition, and ebook approval plans) rather than rejecting one or more acquisition modes on principle. …

Cu Law Library Launches New Resource For Historical Colorado Statutory Research, Robert Linz

Colorado legal researchers have a new tool for statutory research. The University of Colorado's William A. Wise Law Library (Law Library or CU Law Library) has completed a digitization project of Colorado session laws. The collection contains PDF files of session law volumes from 1861 (when the Territory of Colorado was created) through 1992. The collection is available at lawlibrary.colorado.edu/colorado-session-laws. This article describes the need for such a collection, how it was created, and how to search it.

Examining Inclusive Programming In A Middle School Library: A Case Study Of Adolescents Who Are Differently- And Typically-Able, Clayton A. Copeland, Karen W. Gavigan Dr.

Numerous national and international studies have shown the importance of school libraries and librarians in students’ educations, including literacy skill development and academic achievement. However, published research investigating school library accessibility and services from the perspectives of students who are differently-able are extremely limited, as are studies of inclusive library programming, or programming serving both typically-able and differently-able students. This case study examines inclusive library programming with adolescents in a middle school library. Findings indicate that the impact of inclusive school library programming was meaningful and often extended beyond the library’s walls. The purpose of this paper is to explore whether journalism education techniques can be adapted for use in the information literacy classroom as a means of teaching the ethical use of information. The author uses personal experience as a journalist and graduate of journalism education programs to examine the similarities between journalism pedagogy and information literacy and whether any aspect of journalism pedagogy is transferrable to the information literacy classroom.

This article highlights the vast resources available in the Harold B. Lee Library at Brigham Young University (BYU) for those conducting genealogical research. The BYU Family History Library and other library departments provide extensive collections of genealogical records in print and online as well as experienced librarians, missionaries, and staff to help genealogists find needed information about their ancestors.

Describes Raynor Library’s process to export MARC records and upload them to the Catholic Research Resources Association (CRRA) database. Steps through the process of extracting the records from local Innovative Interfaces Sierra database, and editing/massaging the MARC records with the MarcEdit software . The process is documented with many screenshots demonstrating the search queries, and command/menu paths needed to extract and update the MARC records.

Describes the steps taken to extract Author/Corporate names from our local catalog (III-Sierra), the initial data cleanup work done in Microsoft Excel, and the final data cleanup work and Name reconciliation against the Virtual International Authority File (VIAF) and Library of Congress Name Authority file (LCNAF) using OpenRefine. Familiarity with extracting data from the local catalog and basic knowledge of how to use Excel is assumed. How to use OpenRefine for data cleanup and reconciliation is covered in depth (and with many screenshots).

The most recent iteration of the ACRL Standards for Information Literacy has added “dispositions” to the repertoire of information literacy practice. This poster will explore how these “dispositions” might be understood in Adventist Theological Education. The first iteration of ACRL Standards for Information Literacy was largely instrumental and most instruction was focused on using technology. This development shifts the focus from learning an ICT skill to transformative learning. Information seeking has been transformed from a scarcity model to an abundance model. Academic libraries in New York State have benefited from Coordinated Collection Development Aid, meant to support resource sharing, since 1981. In recent years, dwindling academic library budgets have increased the need to utilize funds effectively. Patrons already benefit from the connection between resource sharing and collection development, where ILL is important and shared collections are valued. A need existed to connect the dots between library collection development and resource sharing cooperatives, where the strength of resource sharing groups is the strength of the combined, diversified collections of its members.
