Two factors are converging that make business as usual no longer viable for academic law libraries: transition of legal resources from print to digital formats and economic changes in legal education.

Libraries and librarians have a variety of relationships with Institutional Review Boards (IRBs). These relationships differ by the institution type, engagement level with the IRB, and the type of library within which a librarian works. What roles, then, might a librarian fill with regard to an institution’s IRB? This article provides a short history and an overview of the purpose of the IRB, and proposes three possible roles for librarians: that of the lead investigator in their own research, that of a reviewer for the IRB, and that of an ex-officio member or research liaison serving as an information consultant …

Home Grown Ebooks: North Carolina’S Collaborative Ebook Pilot Project, Jill Morris

This article describes how NC LIVE, a large, statewide, multi-type library consortium piloted new models for funding and purchasing a shared ebook collection that concentrated on books published by local publishers. Although the pilot is still being evaluated, the consortium counts the project as a success in that 200 libraries statewide gained unlimited simultaneous user access to more than 1,200 titles not previously available in libraries. NC LIVE is now working with publishers and a platform provider to move the ebook pilot into its next phase as a full-fledged ebook program. The aim of this article is to describe the …

This article describes collaboration between a research librarian and application developer at the University of Utah with a teen services librarian at Salt Lake County Libraries. Our group came together as part of the Innovative Librarians Explore, Apply, and Discover-Utah (ILEAD Utah) program. We discuss how we worked together to create and develop a project, the opportunities and difficulties we faced, and offer suggestions for how to build similar partnerships successfully.

A Study Of Authorship Patterns And Collaborative Research In Collaborative Librarianship, 2009-2014, Kotti Thavamani

This paper presents a bibliometric study of Collaborative Librarianship (CL) during the period of 2009-2014. A total of 223 research contributions and 343 authors were examined by growth of contributions by year and volume, authorship patterns by year and volume, growth of authors by year, authorship patterns, author productivity, authorship patterns by global, most prolific contributors and degree of collaboration. Average number of authors per paper is 1.538. The highest number of author productivity i.e., 0.650. The average degree of author collaboration in the Collaborative Librarianship is 0.354, which clearly indicates its dominance upon single authored contributions.

Despite declarations that libraries are the heart of the institution, they are frequently overlooked or taken for granted. Collaborations are a way librarians can more fully participate in the culture of the institutions they serve. A review of the literature finds an emphasis on collaboration with faculty members, both full-time and adjunct, but there is less emphasis on the many departments in academia that do not have faculty members. As academic librarians position themselves at the heart of their institutions, it is vital to work with all departments and not focus solely on faculty-based departments. Growing Our Own: A Regional Leadership Challenge, Melissa Jadlos

This chapter describes a leadership institute based on the theories of Kouzes and Posner created in Rochester, NY. Participants were surveyed 10 and 12 years after their participation about the impact of the institute on their career and leadership style. The leadership characteristics taught in the institute are compared to leadership characteristics proposed by two library organizations. Due to the similarity, the author suggests future institutes aligned with Kouzes and Posner would be a good way to train future library leaders.

The Xavier University of Louisiana Library Resource Center was built in 1993. After Hurricane Katrina filled the library with 18 inches of water in 2005, its first floor was re-carpeted, its bookshelves refurbished and the reference room was returned to its original state. In 2013, the Xavier Library began acquiring electronic resources to replace the majority of its print reference and print journal collections. As more virtual resources were purchased, less shelving space was needed, inspiring Xavier librarians to seize this opportunity to create a more inviting library that students could use for research, gathering, and studying. Use Existing Data First: Reconcile Metadata Before Creating New Controlled Vocabularies, Jeremy Myntti, Anna Neatrour

The use of controlled vocabularies is essential in the creation of metadata for digital collections in order to provide consistency and ease of use for patrons and researchers. The University of Utah has been working to clean up metadata for digital collections to ensure that data adheres to best practices with the use of specific, controlled vocabularies. This has included a major data-cleanup project utilizing multiple approaches including a vendor's authority control service, data reconciliation in OpenRefine, and the exploration of different tools used for the creation and maintenance of local controlled vocabularies.

Libraries have been building publishing programs in increasing numbers, with motivations including the needs of local authors and editors and the desire to positively impact scholarly communications. Library publishers offer diverse services, depending on their goals and capabilities. In this column, two librarians involved in managing publishing services profile their institutions' respective programs. Efforts aimed at increasing library–publisher cooperation and education are briefly mentioned.

Austin State University (SFASU), we have discovered that there are many complex details to launching a successful online journal-publishing program. In our lead role at SFASU, we have streamlined implementation to make this a relatively straightforward process for the journal managers and editors.

Most of the journal editors with whom we currently work are experienced authors and reviewers, but they rely upon us to assist them with the design, implementation and editorial processes. Sam Houston State University’s Special Collections (SHSU) needed a way to expose finding aids to more users. Using social media to promote online awareness, while simultaneously improving search engine result rankings for the finding aids, seemed like a potential solution to this problem. With this goal in mind, SHSU researchers selected ten social media sites to test the assumption that posting information about finding aids to social media would be an effective marketing strategy. Following three months of posting information about finding aids while tracking user traffic to finding aids from social media sites, the research findings indicate that a …

The academic library has taken on the new role of institutional publishing house, using institutional repository (IR) services to enable journal publishing and manage conference planning. Librarians taking on this new role as publisher must know the journal publishing work flow, including online article submission, peer review, publishing, marketing, and assessment. They must understand international identifiers such as the electronic International Standard Serial Number (eISSN) and Digital Object Identifier (DOI).
