In this research paper, I examine three digital archives of women writers--University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Willa Cather Archive, Northeastern University’s Women Writers Online, and University of Alberta’s Orlando Project--for evidence of encoding practices and computational text analysis experimentation that supports feminist scholarship. I provide a brief overview of text encoding practices and controversies in digital literary studies, emphasizing research that suggests heavily detailed and interpretative markup results in more meaningful text analysis outcomes. I situate feminist text encoding and analysis practices and technologies within a larger argument for the use of detailed, interpretative and critical markup. I begin my research on …

Developing The Writing-Information Literacy Nexus: Results Of A Three-Year Illinois Wesleyan Mellon Grant, Chris Sweet, Joel Haefner

This presentation summarizes some of the successes and challenges of a 3-year Mellon Grant that targeted both Writing and Information Literacy in the disciplines. Grant activities included collaborative assignment design, pedagogical workshops, enhanced writing tutor training, and additional professional development opportunities.

Taking Care Of Digital Efforts: A Multiplanar View Of Project Afterlives, Robin Camille Davis

Publications and Research

In this presentation, given at the 2015 MLA Convention, I examine the status of online digital humanities projects 10 years after they were presented.

Just over half of the 60 projects presented at DH2005 are still online. Of all the projects, about one-third are ongoing; one-third have been clearly completed; and one-third have unknown statuses. Of the 23 projects that were considered to be complete, three-quarters are still online; one quarter is no longer accessible.

Training And Development Issues: Evidence From Polytechnic Libraries In Ghana, Edward Asante, Anaba Alemna

This study sought to assess training and development issues in Polytechnic Libraries in Ghana. The mixed method approach was used as the research design for the survey. Questionnaire and interview schedules were used for data collection. Out of one hundred and forty-four copies of questionnaire distributed to the Librarians/Directors and Library Staff, one hundred and ten were retrieved, representing 76.4%. All the Librarians /Directors of the Polytechnic Libraries were also interviewed. The study revealed that all the Polytechnic libraries did not have their own training and development policies. Images Of The Surreal: Contrived Photographs Of Native American Indians In Archives And Suggested Best Practices, Zachary R. Jones

This essay explores the complex history of contrived photographs of Native American Indians created by non-Native photographers around the turn of the twentieth century. Based on research and surveys this essay overviews issues associated with contrived photographs, colonial narratives of history, and offers perspectives and survey feedback on practices that could improve archival description of controversial historical photographs of American Indians found in archives around the world.

Developing And Organizing An Archival Education Training Opportunity For Oregon’S Tribal Communities: The Oregon Tribal Archives Institute, Natalia M. Fernandez, David G. Lewis

In 2012 Oregon State University hosted the Oregon Tribal Archives Institute (OTAI), a week long archival education training opportunity specifically designed for Oregon’s nine federally recognized tribes. This article describes the OTAI project development, organization, and implementation. The authors offer various lessons learned that can be applied by others who wish to offer a similar archival education institute.

Natives In The Nation's Archives: The Southwest Oregon Research Project, David G. Lewis

Journal of Western Archives

The Southwest Oregon Research Project, initiated by members of the Coquille Indian tribe broke ground in Oregon for archival collections. Tribal scholars, working to restore and support their tribal nations collected documents and learned skills of archival research and organization. The last phase of the project returned collections to regional tribes in a community process of potlatch. The project theory reversed the trend of the late 19th and early 20th centuries of collecting information from tribes with little or no reciprocity. Tribes today are using the information to write histories, restore cultural identities and support tribal sovereignty.

In this article I examine the landscape of tribal or Indigenous archival management as it relates to digital assets and, more specifically, how these might help us reimagine the intellectual property needs of local, traditional, and indigenous communities, libraries, archives, and museums as they seek to manage, preserve, and reuse their digital cultural heritage. The colonial collecting project was a destructive mechanism by which Native materials were unhinged from their local places and knowledge and at the same time used as markers of Native erasure. ESIP has been collecting and hosting Earth and Environmental ontologies in the ESIP Ontology Portal. But these ontologies have very different degrees of quality and curation. One way to ascertain this degree of quality is to locate terms with similar semantics between two ontologies and upload these mappings into the Portal. This work describes how we provide backend mappings between classes in ontologies using Agreement Maker Light, a winning algorithm from the Ontology Alignment Evaluation Initiative. Freedom of Information (FoI) refers to the right which citizens in a society are expected to have to access information held by government institutions and officials. This paper reviews the Nigeria Freedom of Information Act, 2011 and discusses the progress that has been made so far with the enactment of the law. Towards News Verification: Deception Detection Methods For News Discourse, Yimin Chen, Victoria L. Rubin, Niall Conroy

FIMS Presentations

News verification is a process of determining whether a particular news report is truthful or deceptive. Deliberately deceptive (fabricated) news creates false conclusions in the readers’ minds. Truthful (authentic) news matches the writer’s knowledge. How do you tell the difference between the two in an automated way? To investigate this question, we analyzed rhetorical structures, discourse constituent parts and their coherence relations in deceptive and truthful news sample from NPR’s “Bluff the Listener”. Subsequently, we applied a vector space model to cluster the news by discourse feature similarity, achieving 63% accuracy. Our predictive model is not significantly better than chance …
