A Game Of Spot The Difference: Librarians, Repository Managers, And Publishers, David Scherer
A Game Of Spot The Difference: Librarians, Repository Managers, And Publishers, David Scherer
Libraries Faculty and Staff Presentations
Many library publishing programs emerged from institutional repositories. This close relationship has led to the emergence of content platforms that are designed to operate under either use case, however, the missions and requirements of the two types of program differ. A repository for example, may be primarily concerned with the curation, preservation, and accessibility of their institution’s academic output whilst publishers must also concern themselves with external discoverability, search engine optimization, getting indexed in abstract databases and marketing their journals. In this session, you will hear from three successful library publishers who have embraced this external facing aspect of publishing. …

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Presentations
Repositories play 2 critical roles: collection and dissemination. How Nebraska's repository has progressed despite not taking common expert advice. Remarks on the current state of publishing. Opportunities for library publishing and disruptive innovation. A call for scholarship to "come out of Babylon"--the commercial marketplace that inhibits the free creation and sharing of knowledge. A call for librarians to take leadership in the evolution of new roles and relationships with our faculty colleagues. Sturm und Drang, hyperbole, irony, and passion.

Developing A Journal Editor Workshop, Allegra Swift, Isaac Gilman
Library Staff Publications and Research
One of the common misconceptions around open access journals is that they lack quality and impact. For a library publishing program, it is important for the program’s journals to contradict this misconception in order to retain institutional support and gain quality submissions, peer reviewers, and substantive editorial boards. A workshop to educate and provide improvement support for journal editors was born out of a conversation between two librarians responsible for library publishing efforts at their respective institutions. A need for editor support was recognized as being transferable across institutions and the two decided to build a model workshop. The workshop …

This paper was presented on March, 28, 2015, at the Association for College and Research Libraries Conference in Portland, Oregon. Full Conference proceedings are available here.
Post-graduate internships, residencies, and fellowships have existed in research libraries since the 1930s, and have increasingly become a diversity recruitment and retention method of college and university libraries since the 1980s. These programs recruit recent graduates from Library and Information Science programs for training and specialization in some aspect of academic and research librarianship, usually under a term-limited contract of one to three years, often with a stated goal of contributing to the …

Faculty & Staff Research & Creative Activity
More than halfway into the second decade of the 21st century, academic libraries are becoming more integrated in the scholarly life of their faculties than ever before. Important trends in scholarly communication, such as transitioning from subscription journals to open access journals, increasing amounts of “born digital” data and creative works, the growing importance of protecting one’s intellectual property rights, and keeping digital scholarship organized, managed, and preserved, are all areas where academic scholars and researchers require support services and assistance. Librarians are natural partners to provide these services.

Recent ARL and Ithaka reports assert that changes in higher education demand we transform our thinking about liaison services. Liaison work is no longer a job for Lone Heroes. Meeting the changing expectations of students, researchers and faculty requires a Superteam of individuals equipped with an arsenal of expertise. This session features replicable strategies that demonstrate how to expand service through internal collaborative partnerships, empower liaisons through skill development, and leverage technology to sustain effort.

The revised information literacy standards emphasize students as creators, and not just consumers, of information. Yet, so accustomed to supporting their classroom work, academic libraries have done little to help students develop an instinct for encountering information through self-directed curiosity. In this panel, learn how librarians are helping students develop this instinct through recreational reading promotion. Use and adapt these program and outreach ideas in order to better meet your academic library’s information literacy mission.

Digital Humanities In Ten Pages Or Less! Engaging Students With Digital Texts Through Sustainable Collaboration, Julie Thompson Klein, Judith Arnold, Graham S. Hukill
Library Scholarly Publications
Digital Humanities projects are somewhat new to many librarians, particularly those who are liaisons to faculty who are venturing into this area. Because of this “newness,” many librarians are unsure of their role in engaging with faculty or other librarian colleagues who are working with digital collections and editions, text mining, or other applications of technology to humanities scholarship. A digital humanities project need not be intimidating. Opportunities are nascent in everyday projects and technologies. Through the example of a digital humanities project integrated into a senior-level writing intensive course for English majors, this session will offer attendees a working …

This paper presents the results of a comparative analysis done on the features, usability and accessibility of academic ebook platforms such as ebrary, EBL, Safari, Springer, and Wiley. This research was done across platforms (iOS, Windows, Android) and included testing with a variety of the most prominent accessible technologies.

Research, Publications, and Presentations
Citations from journal articles and dissertations from the Department of Polymer Science (DPS) at the University of Akron from 2006–2011 were examined and journals ranked in order of usage frequency. Journal usage of dissertations and articles was also ranked within research groups. 85 dissertations and 464 faculty publications that included 378 publications from 16 dissertation advisors were examined. Citations to 1422 journals were counted and recorded. Findings demonstrate that individual groups vary wildly in journal usage representing microclimates for collection development purposes.

Avoiding the one-shot instruction standard was the goal when targeting adult learners in our university’s evening degree program. We crafted a semester-long course to help returning adult learners navigate academic research. Attendees learned how we designed our course based in adult learning theory. We also discussed our strategy for persuading reluctant administrators on the importance of information literacy courses. This presentation also included feedback from students regarding their newly gained skills.

Many academic libraries have found opportunities to showcase unique content through conference-hosting services, such as website-hosting and conference proceeding publishing. This poster describes two libraries’ successful efforts to archive conference materials from an undergraduate research conference and a professional conference for scholars.
Through the lens of these two case studies, the repository coordinators will discuss engaging with presenters on topics of author rights, ethical use of others’ work in their presentations, creating a sustainable infrastructure for continued growth of the conference, and collaborating with faculty.
