When Active Learning Goes Flat, Lindsey Mclean, Elisa Acosta
When Active Learning Goes Flat, Lindsey Mclean, Elisa Acosta
Librarian Publications & Presentations
What happens when an active learning activity goes flat? You rapidly transform your lackluster exercise into an engaging activity midway through the semester! In this presentation we will discuss our instructional design efforts for a required in-person library instruction session for 73 Rhetorical Arts classes (1,273 freshmen). We used elements from both the hybrid approach and gamification techniques. Hybrid, or blended learning is a method of instruction in which students learn through a combination of face-to-face instruction and computer-mediated activities. The paper-based, active learning exercise the students completed in class was “gamified” and transformed into a digital learning object to …

The Future Perfect Repository: An Unsuccessful Proposal, Paul Royster
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Presentations
Some day, in 5 or 25 years, someone probably attending the Open Repositories 2015 meeting will have participated in developing the future perfect or near-perfect repository. Spoiler alert: It will not be me. I am far too technically challenged, having last studied computer science in 1970, when we programmed on punch cards in the newest language—Fortran IV. Still, I believe I can comment productively on what the future perfect repository will look like and how it will behave. I have managed a successful institutional repository for more than 10 years, and I have visited, browsed, searched, downloaded from, and crash-landed …

Theft And Vandalism Of Books, Manuscripts, And Related Materials In Public And Academic Libraries, Archives, And Special Collections, Silke P. Higgins
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
While book theft and vandalism in public and academic libraries, as well as archives and special collections, are not considered a modern problem, they have, in recent years, become a matter of increasing concern to these institutions. Easy access to materials housed in multi-story libraries difficult to effectively supervise; the online presence of archives and special collections detailing the contents of their collections to attract researchers and visitors; and a seemingly growing number of persons willing to express their personal convictions and beliefs by removing or destroying items from public and private collections, are among the primary reasons for the …

Interference Archive: A Free Space For Social Movement Culture, Alycia Sellie, Jesse Goldstein, Molly Fair, Jennifer Hoyer
Interference Archive: A Free Space For Social Movement Culture, Alycia Sellie, Jesse Goldstein, Molly Fair, Jennifer Hoyer
Publications and Research
This paper discusses activist archives within the context of community archives and the practices of archiving activism. Interference Archive (IA), a volunteer-run independent archive in Brooklyn, New York, is presented as one example of an activist archive. We explain the manner in which IA functions as a transmovement and prefigurative “free space” under Francis Poletta’s typology of movement spaces. Through this explanation, we illustrate how the structures of free spaces can help us understand the way activist archives forge connections between communities and the ways that they create new networks of solidarity through the archival process.

Embracing Change: Adapting And Evolving Your Distance Learning Library Services To Embrace The New Acrl Distance Learning Library Services Standards, Heather K. Beirne, Sarah Richardson, Brad Marcum, Karen Gilbert
EKU Faculty and Staff Scholarship
Distance learning continues to grow by leaps and bounds and almost all academic libraries are struggling to evolve and adapt to offer quality equivalent services and resources to their distance students. This interactive presentation will offer participants an in-depth analysis of the new ACRL Distance Learning Library Services Standards, offer forecasts regarding the future of distance learning, and will draw distinctions between the previous 2008 Standards for Distance Learning Library Services and the new standards. Practical advice on how to update distance learning library services to meet the new standards will be offered, and participants are encouraged to bring their …

Leveraging Expertise To Meet Research Data Management Needs, Allegra Swift
Library Staff Publications and Research
Scholarly communication expertise and responsibility is often located in only a few members of an academic community. Librarians increasingly need to be knowledgeable and articulate about scholarly communication issues, including research data management. How to best leverage librarian expertise and build knowledge in these areas is an ongoing challenge. Stakeholders from two institutions will speak about their efforts to build capacity for data-related support and services in an expedient and economical way. At Claremont Colleges Library, the scholarly communication librarian and a social science librarian are creating infrastructure that will allow the Library to expand its data services while also …

The Career Path, Education, And Activities Of Academic Law Library Directors Revisited Twenty-Five Years Later, Michael J. Slinger, Sarah C. Slinger
Scholarly Works
In conducting this new study, our goal is to provide useful information to the profession and guidance to future law library directors. We also think that by examining the director position we can provide a window into how the profession of academic law librarianship is evolving. Some of the changes we uncovered we see as positive. However, other changes are of concern, including an emerging trend at some institutions to remove full faculty status from the director. This is alarming to those of us who think retaining full partnership with the law faculty is crucial for the future effectiveness of …
Helping The Adult Learner Succeed: How Community College Libraries In Massachusetts Are Serving This Growing Population, Katherine A. Turcotte
Helping The Adult Learner Succeed: How Community College Libraries In Massachusetts Are Serving This Growing Population, Katherine A. Turcotte
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Education is something that is valued more each and every day. A growing number of people in today’s society realize the importance of education and the increasing need to return to school. As the number of adult learners continues to rise, so too does the need to reach out to this population to make sure they are being presented with the appropriate tools and resources needed to succeed. Because it is theorized that adults (those age 25+) who return to school are likely to enroll in a community college, rather than a four year university, this study looks specifically at …

Panel title: Staffing a Library Publishing Program: The Whos, Hows, and Whens
Panel abstract: This session aims to address one of the most frequently raised concerns about library-led publishing: how to plan for staffing this new endeavor? The panel will discuss two inflection points in staff planning for library publishing: what it takes to get started (for a library that is just beginning to think about publishing), and what it takes to grow (for a library that has a few years of experience and wants to do more). It will also shed light on one of the least understood, and …
