Non-Affiliated Users' Access In Tennessee Academic Libraries, Michael Busbee, Heidi Busch, Jim Nance
The Southeastern Librarian
This survey was designed to ascertain how Tennessee public four-year academic libraries were addressing unaffiliated user access to services and resources and related security issues. At one point in time, resources and services were basically limited to the material on the shelf and the personnel employed by the library. Security issues were concerned with student pranks and vandalism and, depending upon location, the issue of vagrants and/or latchkey kids. Access to the building usually meant people had access to all of the material the library had on the shelf and the only question was whether an unaffiliated user could borrow …

The Daniel Library at The Citadel hosts library events throughout the year with the expectations that engaging with students will reduce library anxiety and will create a connection between the student and the library. This article seeks to examine whether or not these purposeful efforts to interact with college students in the library are successful. A survey was administered in order to measure the impact these events have on the students’ perception of the library and the librarians.

Predicated on research demonstrating books requested through interlibrary loan that are purchased for the collection usually circulate more, cost less, and add value to the collection, Lupton Library’s Dean proposed this patron driven acquisition model. A Buy, not Borrow (BNB) pilot project was implemented at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga’s Lupton Library in January 2010.

Panel: The Architectural Touch: Gestural Approaches To Library Search, Andreas Kratky, Virginia Kuhn, Susan Luftschein, Michaela Ullmann
Digital Initiatives Symposium
This panel centers on the LibViz project—a touch and gesture-based interface that allows users to navigate through library collections using visual queries—and the issues surrounding such efforts. The LibViz project, for which we have done initial research and constructed a prototype, aims to increase the discoverability of library materials, particularly those of non-textual objects, which are difficult to access via traditional search and which do not circulate. Many collections are currently preparing large scale digitizing of threedimensional objects and it is imperative to develop appropriate methods to work with this new kind of data. The established methods only do a …

Xsd: The Path From Excel To Xml: The Basics: Mapping Elements And Attributes, Amelia Mowry
Library Scholarly Publications
Working with metadata often means moving it between various formats. One problematic move to make is from a spreadsheet to an XML file. This paper will describe the basics of using an XSD to map a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet to XML.
Moving metadata can be a messy process, especially when the data is older. Data often comes out of legacy systems as csv files, tab-delimited files, or Excel files. Moving data from these formats into XML can prove to be a challenge. I have also found it beneficial to do some initial data cleaning in spreadsheet form. This allows for …

Between Subject And Tech Expertise: Collaborating With Faculty For Digital Humanities Projects [Presentation], Rose Fortier, Heather G. James, Wendy Fall
Library Faculty Research and Publications
Libraries are well-positioned for partnership with digital humanities efforts in several ways. The management of digital items and the description of information resources for future researchers make libraries natural partners in digital humanities projects. Often Humanities scholars will reach out to the library for support or even guidance in these projects.
At Marquette University, the Gothic Archive exemplifies the development of this collaboration. Though the Archive started as a humble collection of digitized and transcribed gothic chapbooks, it is being developed into an interwoven collection of digitized materials and contextual objects and promises to become a full-fledged digital humanities tool. …

Introducing Undergraduates To Open Access And The Power Of Collaboration Between Scholarly Communications And Instruction Librarians, Kristin Laughtin-Dunker, Annie Knight
Library Presentations, Posters, and Audiovisual Materials
Undergraduates are often left out of conversations surrounding open access. While they may not share the same concerns about publishing and prestige as faculty and graduate students, they do consume vast amounts of information, and thus can benefit just as much as those farther in their academic careers by knowing how to find, evaluate, and use open access resources. This presentation highlights a successful collaboration between the presenters in their respective roles as scholarly communications librarian and course developer to create and implement curriculum for a 3-unit information literacy course to teach undergraduate students about open access principles. Once the …

WashU Libraries Presentations
The James Merrill Digital Archive (JMDA) is comprised of digitized Ouija board session transcripts, poem drafts, and other materials toward Merrill’s epic narrative poem, “The Book of Ephraim,” part of the Pulitzer Prize-winning book, Divine Comedies. The JMDA is the result of expertise and input of many collaborators across the Washington University campus. Shannon Davis and Joel Minor will speak on various aspects of the ongoing project, including successful cross-campus collaboration, employing student workers to perform high-level encoding and exhibit curation, and how Omeka was used to develop the digital archive.

Selecting An Electronic Records Repository Platform At The South Carolina Department Of Archives And History, Brian Thomas
Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies
In the 2014–2015 fiscal year the South Carolina Department of Archives and History decided to embark on the journey to creating a repository that would house and preserve incoming state agency electronic records. This case study discusses the journey of the newly hired electronic records archivist in researching, evaluating, and recommending a digital repository platform. It also provides a set of take-away lessons learned through the process in the hope that it will help other archivists investigating repository platforms.

I can’t believe that this upcoming week will be my last as a Fortenbaugh intern! While I am sad that this semester is coming to a close, I am also very aware of all I have left to complete. Abby and I have made great progress with our display. The creative process has been really rewarding for both of us, and I know that I personally have really enjoyed doing this as a partner project. We worked together to decide which fabric backdrop to use and we’re having a lot of fun moving the objects around to see where they …

Special Collections Finding Aids
This collection contains a variety of materials relating to the Community Concert Association and its activities including various programs, PR information, photos, correspondence, worker record sheets, and membership lists of the organization over the years. The collection dates from about 1944 to 1985. However, the only years that contain explicit detail about the organization are between the years of 1976 and 1985. There is not a great deal of historical information about how the Community Concert Association began. The collection ends at 1985.

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Abstract.
This paper presents findings for a research study which investigated the information behaviour of final students of Mzuzu University in Malawi. Even after being imparted with necessary skills in how to search and locate relevant information, the author observed that students still find difficulties to find information that they require.
A paper based questionnaire was designed and administered to two hundred and fifty four (254) final year students belonging to the five faculties of the University of which two hundred and forty three (243) responded to the questionnaire A mixed method questionnaire survey was used. Stratified sampling in which …
