Radical Librarian-Technologists, John Schriner

Publications and Research

Librarians may be finding themselves in the role of the technologist that supports students and faculty in Internet security, censorship circumvention, and supports whistleblowers and journalists. This paper looks at three cases where librarians present and teach technologies with these aims: the Tor anonymity network, secure communication in the field of journalism, and the librarian’s place in the maker/hackerspace movement.

Well established “best practices” in digital preservation (DP) do little to address day-to-day realities in repositories that cannot dedicate funds or staff to DP workflows. What can a Lone Arranger do to ensure good stewardship for born digital and digitized institutional records before a complete preservation system is in place?

Becoming The Gothic Archive: From Digital Collection To Digital Humanities, Rose Fortier, Heather G. James

Library Faculty Research and Publications

The Gothic Archive is the flagship digital humanities project for the Marquette University library. The project was birthed from a simple digital collection, and through the partnership of faculty and librarians, was transformed into something more. The core tenets of digital collection creation were adhered to in order to create a solid foundation upon which to build the Archive. The expertise of both groups and communication were key in the evolution of the collection, and in discovering and highlighting the relationships between the objects. This case study reviews the steps Marquette took in creating the collection and taking it to …

Improving Our Reference Data, Or How We Killed The Hash Mark, Katrina B. Rouan, Graham S. Hukill May 2015

Improving Our Reference Data, Or How We Killed The Hash Mark, Katrina B. Rouan, Graham S. Hukill

Library Scholarly Publications

All responsible academic libraries record their reference transactions. It is good practice to know how many patrons have been helped at your service points. For years we have participated in this record keeping with hash marks on paper, painstaking tallying, and manual spreadsheet entry for the purpose of saying, “we helped X patrons during Y month”. But, like most things academic, reference runs on its own calendar and requires more sophisticated tools to truly investigate and evaluate.

To generate more useful reference statistics, we created a simple, online tool for recording reference interactions. The tool is accessible anywhere reference is …

Accommodating Individuals With Autism Spectrum Disorder In Museums, William S. Tyler

History Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to examine the question of how current museum access programs meet the needs of individuals with Autism Spectrum disorder (ASD). ASD is an umbrella classification that presents many challenges for individuals in terms of social development and academic growth. It is important that all individuals are given the opportunity to experience the museum setting to their full ability. With this population of individuals at the forefront, an analysis will be done to examine what needs are present and how museum programming serves them. There are a variety of strategies and accommodations that museums can …

Learning Style Dimensions And Professional Characteristics Of Academic Librarians, Amanda Rinehart, Jennifer Sharkey, Chad M. Kahl May 2015

Learning Style Dimensions And Professional Characteristics Of Academic Librarians, Amanda Rinehart, Jennifer Sharkey, Chad M. Kahl

Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library

Do librarians with different characteristics, such as type of work responsibilities or age, have different learning styles? The authors analyzed results from over 1,500 responses to a version of the Index of Learning Styles (ILS) questionnaire based on the Felder-Silverman Learning Styles model. This model consists of eight dimensions paired on four scales: Active / Reflective; Sensing / Intuitive; Visual / Verbal; and Sequential / Global. In addition to their scores on the ILS questionnaire, respondents were also asked about demographic and professional characteristics. Statistically significant differences in learning style scores were found to exist between librarians with different types …

A Survey On Potential Privacy Leaks Of Gps Information In Android Applications, Srinivas Kalyan Yellanki May 2015

A Survey On Potential Privacy Leaks Of Gps Information In Android Applications, Srinivas Kalyan Yellanki

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Android-based smart phones are extremely common today. However, it is believed that nearly half of the Android devices are vulnerable to an attack that alters the functionality of an app with malicious software. The malware can collect users’ sensitive data from the phone. In particular, there are hundreds of location-based applications available nowadays in the Google Play store or other app stores. The very famous services called “Location Based Services” are used by many apps on mobile phones to track the geographical coordinates of the device. Such location information can be leaked to an attacker via malware.

In this thesis, …

The Beginnings Of The Journal Of Food Law & Policy, Michael T. Roberts May 2015

The Beginnings Of The Journal Of Food Law & Policy, Michael T. Roberts

Journal of Food Law & Policy

In the first sentence of the introduction to the inaugural edition of the Journal for Food Law & Policy, Margie Alsbrook, the founding Editor-in-Chief, and I, the founding faculty advisor, stated: "It is with great pride and pleasure that we present the inaugural issue of the Journal for Food Law & Policy." In celebration of the Journal's tenth anniversary, I am inclined to echo the same sentiment, but with the added proviso: "surprised!" I confess being gravely concerned ten years ago over the Journal's survivability. Food law and policy was then barely in its formative stage. The nascent, social food …

We're All In This Together: Mentoring In Academic Libraries (Poster), Matt Ruen, Cara Cadena, Betsy Williams

Presentations

Navigating a new job can be difficult for both new and experienced librarians. How will you learn “the way we do things here”? Mentoring can play a key role in helping librarians find their way to becoming effective professionals. Grand Valley State University currently has several formal mentoring programs for new librarians, in addition to informal mentoring. Our poster will discuss GVSU’s mentoring programs and the purposes they serve—acclimating to university culture, developing position-specific skills, and successfully participating in the scholarly process. We will include our experiences and perspectives as recent participants in these programs. This discussion will include insights …

The Relationship Between Manuscript Title Structure And Success: Editorial Decisions And Citation Performance For An Ecological Journal, Charles W. Fox, C. Sean Burns May 2015

The Relationship Between Manuscript Title Structure And Success: Editorial Decisions And Citation Performance For An Ecological Journal, Charles W. Fox, C. Sean Burns

Entomology Faculty Publications

A poorly chosen article title may make a paper difficult to discover or discourage readership when discovered, reducing an article's impact. Yet, it is unclear how the structure of a manuscript's title influences readership and impact. We used manuscript tracking data for all manuscripts submitted to the journal Functional Ecology from 2004 to 2013 and citation data for papers published in this journal from 1987 to 2011 to examine how title features changed and whether a manuscript's title structure was predictive of success during the manuscript review process and/or impact (citation) after publication. Titles of manuscripts submitted to Functional Ecology …

The Flipped Classroom For Library Instruction: A Student Focused Assessment, Michael C. Goates

Faculty Publications

Librarians at Brigham Young University conducted an assessment to evaluate student performance in developing effective search strategies between flipped classroom and traditional library instruction models. In the flipped classroom model, students completed an interactive online tutorial prior to attending a face-to-face instruction session in the library. During the face-to-face session, students collaborated on projects designed to reinforce concepts explained in the online tutorial. In this presentation, participants will learn about the history of the flipped classroom teaching model for library instruction. Next, the presenter will explain the process of developing a flipped library instruction session for undergraduate students in the …

Power To The People: A Comprehensive Look At Crowdsourcing Initiatives In Cultural Institutions, Danielle Pace May 2015

Power To The People: A Comprehensive Look At Crowdsourcing Initiatives In Cultural Institutions, Danielle Pace

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Today, crowdsourcing has become an integrative approach to completing projects using the help of the general populous. These projects aid museum staff by processing large quantities of data, which otherwise could not be completed due to time and/or staff restraints. Through crowdsourcing, cultural institutions have the ability to outsource these tasks to volunteers, who can complete them at much faster rates. Although staff members are needed to validate and supervise these projects, crowdsourcing remains a useful tool in increasing public interactions and project efficiency.

This thesis presents a thorough outline of what crowdsourcing is, how it is being utilized, and …

Blogging the Library

I cannot believe that this is my last post. It seems like only yesterday that I was writing my first post about how my training for the reference desk was going. This semester has been truly wonderful and I have learned so much. Through the many projects that I have taken part in and my final project that I designed myself, it has been an amazing opportunity.
