Hip To Be Prepared: Tips For Managing Multiple Conferences In Your Repository, Ashley D. Lowery

University Libraries: Faculty Presentations

Digital Commons@Georgia Southern accumulated almost twenty conferences since its launch in Fall 2013. In addition to conferences, the repository also hosts journals, SelectedWorks author profiles, student research, and other collections. Currently, Digital Commons@Georgia Southern only has a few library employees (including students) working on the repository. In order to sustain and increase the conferences in the repository, the Digital Collections Specialist streamlined processes and discovered the best ways to collaborate with their repository’s clients. In this presentation, find out tips on meeting and training clients, separating the libraries’ from the clients’ responsibilities, creating support materials, etc. Throughout the presentation, examples …

Using A Library Impact Map To Assist Strategic Planning In Libraries, Holt E Zaugg Jun 2015

Using A Library Impact Map To Assist Strategic Planning In Libraries, Holt E Zaugg

Faculty Publications

Strategic planning in academic libraries enables librarians to plan for the delivery of services that meet university foci and patron needs. In creating a strategic plan, it is helpful to have an overall view of the strategic plan and a view that allows planners to focus on more narrow aspects. A library impact map is designed to provide these perspectives. This article describes how a library impact map can be created and may be used in the strategic planning process.

Enhancing Discoverability: How To Describe Digitalcommons Content For Harvest Into Cultural Heritage Institutions, Andrew Wesolek, Joshua Morgan Jun 2015

Enhancing Discoverability: How To Describe Digitalcommons Content For Harvest Into Cultural Heritage Institutions, Andrew Wesolek, Joshua Morgan

Presentations

Both institutional repositories and cultural heritage institutions have broadly defined collection development policies. As such, many collections could appropriately reside in both. However, at many institutions digital libraries that support cultural heritage collections are often supported by CONTENTdm, while institutional repository initiatives are supported by another platform--in Clemson's case, DigitalCommons. Librarians at Clemson University identified several key collections that fit both the scope of its institutional repository and digital library. In order to leverage the "google-ability" of the institutional repository with the discoverability that comes with inclusion in the DPLA, we embarked on a process to describe our collection and …

Librarian Actions To Develop And Sustain Human Research Subject Protection: A Pilot Global Study, Charles J. Greenberg, Sangeeta Narang Jun 2015

Librarian Actions To Develop And Sustain Human Research Subject Protection: A Pilot Global Study, Charles J. Greenberg, Sangeeta Narang

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The Institutional Review Board (IRB), also known as an Independent Ethics Committee (IEC), is the most widely adopted process to insure human participant protection. The IRB system is overburdened as human research studies and human participation has dramatically increased without a corresponding increase in reviewing clinicians or ethics staff. Librarian involvement in the IRB process is evident but uneven and unstudied on an international scale. A literature review and international survey attempted to provide professional practice context and librarian reflection on the extent of their involvement, roles, and responsibilities in the IRB or IEC institutional process. Survey results reveal that …

Library Resource Usage And Student Success At Eastern Kentucky University, Kelly Smith, Jens Arneson, Matthew Irvin, Kwan Yi Jun 2015

Library Resource Usage And Student Success At Eastern Kentucky University, Kelly Smith, Jens Arneson, Matthew Irvin, Kwan Yi

EKU Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Library impact studies at many universities have indicated a correlation between library resource usage and student success; for example, the University of Wollongong, the University of Minnesota, Murray State University, the University of Huddersfield, and York University have all found that increased library usage correlates with student success, and that students who do not use the library at all have significantly lower outcomes. To add to this growing body of evidence, Eastern Kentucky University Libraries analyzed undergraduate usage of online library resources and found a similar effect: on average, EKU students who logged in to access the Libraries’ online resources …

Patient Access To Electronic Health Records: Strengths, Weaknesses And What’S Needed To Move Forward, Alicia V. Zuniga May 2015

Patient Access To Electronic Health Records: Strengths, Weaknesses And What’S Needed To Move Forward, Alicia V. Zuniga

School of Information Student Research Journal

Electronic health records (EHRs) are desired by both physicians and patients, but the transition to and acceptance of sensitive health information online has been slow. This paper reviews the current literature on EHR adoption and outlines barriers, advantages and explicit steps for moving toward the EHR ubiquity. Potential benefits of EHRs to patients and physicians include reduced costs for patients, hospitals and insurance providers, patient empowerment, less errors in records and better health outcomes, but security and privacy concerns, cost of implementation and poor electronic records management system design have proved barriers to adoption.

A Model For Reflective Practice In Libraries, Tobeylynn Birch May 2015

A Model For Reflective Practice In Libraries, Tobeylynn Birch

Librarian Publications & Presentations

As librarians increasingly engage in quantitative and qualitative methods to assess and improve services and operations, reflective practice provides a means to ensure that results are relevant to the new challenges that libraries face. Although reflective practice, introduced by Donald Schön in 1983, has been widely adopted in education and other professions, there is little evidence of reflective practice in libraries, other than the facilitation of reflection in students.

The library profession would benefit from reflective practice. Libraries now operate in rapidly changing environments, where long-standing practices may no longer achieve desired results. Reflective practice encourages professionals to take a …
