There are many reasons to compile a faculty bibliography: recording faculty accomplishments, preserving information for future generations, and supporting your institution’s external affairs office, to name a few. Also, it is a potential publication for librarians at a tenure-granting institution. So, why did we decide to create a faculty bibliography? It was a combination of past inquiries from our patrons and the need to publish. Prior to this bibliography, no such compilation of our faculty’s work existed. Assuming that students no longer read printed handouts, many librarians have stopped producing printed handouts after observing the piles of paper that remain after library sessions. Libraries have transitioned comfortably to providing online access to handout information via subject and course guides, and now need to make a more complete transition to making them mobile. Although only four in ten college students own a tablet, 75% own a smart phone, and over a third of students intend to purchase either a tablet or a smart phone in the next six months. Public, Private, Popular: Pop Performers, Liberalism And The Limits Of Rights, Matt Stahl

FIMS Publications

American popular music discourse and pop performers' political practice frequently give prominence to questions of rights, particularly in relation to musical property and labour. This article examines these two rights issues as they appear in popular media and in lawmaking. The article invokes the liberal division of life into "public" and "private" realms in order to explicate the mechanics of rights claims in media and legislative forums, and to explore their relationship with aspects of liberal common sense. It draws on a political-theoretical framework to problematize liberalism's basic division of life into "public" and "private" realms, and suggests that pop …

Xquery For Archivists: Understanding Ead Finding Aids As Data, Gregory Wiedeman

XML has long been an important tool for archivists. The addition of XQuery provides a simple and easy-to-learn tool to extract, transform, and manipulate the large amounts of XML data that archival repositories have committed resources to develop and maintain – particularly EAD finding aids. XQuery allows archivists to make use of that data. Furthermore, using XQuery to query EAD finding aids, rather than merely reformat them with XSLT, forces archivists to look at finding aids as data. This will provide better knowledge of how EAD may be used and further understanding of how finding aids may be better encoded. …

Creating Digital Comics In Response To Literature: Aesthetics, Aesthetic Transactions, And Meaning Making, Kelly Wissman, Sean Costello

Literacy Teaching & Learning Faculty Scholarship

This article explores how eighth-grade students in a reading support class responded to the novel The Outsiders with the software program Comic Life. Rather than viewing this work from a new technologies or digital literacies perspective, we argue that unique insights can be gained by analyzing students’ digital compositions with lenses attuned to the arts, the aesthetic transaction, and student perspectives. In our presentation of four case studies, we are informed by two conceptualizations of aesthetics. This article illustrates how archival finding aids or other documents in any common word processing file format can be mass converted to web friendly PDF and HTML formats with free software so they can be made available on the web. Files are initially uploaded to Google Drive, then converted and downloaded in either PDF or HTML format. For HTML files code is then edited in Notepad++ if necessary. The intended audience for this article is smaller institutions with fewer technological resources to devote to creating full EAD finding aids or exporting information to a database, but who nevertheless would like …

Embedded librarianship provides information literacy instruction right where students prefer to do course related research: online. The learning management system (LMS) provides an effective arena for librarians to collaborate with professors and reach students with library services alongside course content. How scalable, though, is this service so that it can meet the needs of all students? Graphic Novels and Introduction to Library Research is an innovative project created by Associate Librarians Rob Weiner and Carrye Syma. For a one hour credit Library course on research, a graphic novel was created with the assistance of a member of the Libraries’ Communications and Marketing Department. This graphic novel is a complement to the power points previously created for instruction in the course. The novel presents information for various modules in the class, allowing students to experience learning in a fun and exciting manner.

Historically, information literacy has depended on collaborations between librarians and resident faculty in specific disciplines, but new models are needed to accommodate multidisciplinary research and multi-institutional degree programs. This session describes how one model evolved to support the research needs of graduate students enrolled in the International Programme in Addiction Studies offered simultaneously by three universities on three continents: the University of Adelaide, Virginia Commonwealth University, and Kings College, London. The presenters will discuss opportunities and challenges posed by collaborating across campuses, disciplines, institutions, and time zones, and conclude by considering the potential of this model for future collaborations.

The use of a discovery layer transforms the process of identifying and accessing library resources, including archival, published, and virtual historical primary sources. The content of a discovery layer database is not identical with the sum of the online catalog plus the various databases to which the library subscribes. Some kinds of historical primary sources, or their finding aids, may not be included. Even when virtual resources are included in the discovery layer database, reliable access to full text may not be easily available. The presentation illustrates the partnership between an education librarian, a School of Education faculty member, and a graduate student in the School of Library and Information Science, and their use of multiple media platforms for teaching a web-enhanced Grand Challenge course about social justice issues in education.

Globally, institutions are increasingly using Institutional Repositories (IR) to manage their digital resources more effectively. An IR collects, showcases, archives, and preserves the intellectual and scholarly output of an institution. There are many available platforms including Open Source, Proprietary and Custom-built platforms (Sharif 2013; Jain et al. n.d). The focus of this paper is the implementation of Institutional Repository (Digital Commons), a proprietary hosted institutional repository platform by Bepress. Digital Commons is a suite of tools and services that enable institutions to manage, display, and publish on the web in a highly visible online showcase. It has professional-grade publishing tools …
