Interviews With Lifelong Readers: Preliminary Findings From The Edits (Effects Of Digital Information Technology On Seniors) Project, Anabel Quan-Haase, Kathleen Schreurs, Kim Martin

This poster outlines the preliminarily findings of the EDITS study: an inquiry into the digital information habits of senior citizens. The research presented here will focus on the adoption of ereading technology by seniors in order to determine the habits and attitudes, motivations, and barriers experienced by this demographic. Employing semi-structured interviews and the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT), this study aims to investigate one element of the digital divide that sometimes goes unnoticed: age. Despite ingrained habits based on print, findings show motivations, such as convenience, contribute to the adoption of ereading by seniors.

Truth And Deception At The Rhetorical Structure Level, Victoria L. Rubin, Tatiana Lukoianova

This paper furthers the development of methods to dis- tinguish truth from deception in textual data. We use rhetorical structure theory (RST) as the analytic framework to identify systematic differences between deceptive and truthful stories in terms of their coher- ence and structure. A sample of 36 elicited personal stories, self-ranked as truthful or deceptive, is manu- ally analyzed by assigning RST discourse relations among each story’s constituent parts. A vector space model (VSM) assesses each story’s position in multi- dimensional RST space with respect to its distance from truthful and deceptive centers as measures of the story’s level of …

Changing Chance Encounters: Historians, Serendipity, And The Digital Text, Kim Martin, Anabel Quan-Haase

Twenty academic historians in Southern Ontario were interviewed about their use of e-books and the role of serendipity in their research. A central theme that surfaced from the grounded theory analysis was that their use of digital tools and texts is limiting their opportunity for a chance encounter with information.

Midwifery in Ontario, Canada exists at the intersection of mainstream healthcare ideology and an alternative, woman-centred ideology of care. As a result, midwifery interaction is characterized by discursive hybridity. We trace this hybridity in the conversational stories co-narrated by midwives and clients during clinic visits. We show how conversational storytelling performs a complex shifting and blending of rhetorical forms and functions integral to the clinical interaction. Conversational stories conform to the structural requirements of the clinic visit and unfold in different ways and perform different functions at different times. Introduction. This paper considers the practices of information creation in personal information management by studying the work of keeping track in everyday life, e.g., creating lists and calendars.
Method. We interviewed ten participants from two Canadian provinces about how they keep track and we observed and photographed the physical spaces and the documents they created and used. Our data set consists of fourteen hours of interviews, 330 photographs and 500 pages of interview transcripts.

Abstract:This paper reports the findings of an online survey designed to explore the reading practices, library habits, and book acquisition of adult members of an active poetry community (n= 32) in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Findings show the close relationship between poetry reading and poetry writing and the tight interweaving of poetry throughout the working and personal lives of respondents. Reading and finding out about poetry are also highly social in nature with a clear reliance on the poetry community rather than the public library. Academic Outreach librarians at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) offer a full range of instructional services to support upper-level and graduate students. Like most academic libraries, this includes workshops as well as course-integrated instruction and small group or individual consultations. While the latter have grown over the years, workshop attendance has dwindled. Offerings were cut until almost none were left, leaving a void but more importantly providing an opportunity to re-envision the role of workshops in outreach efforts.

To help manage these challenges, today’s cloud-based library management services are offering workflows that save library staff time and discovery solutions that meet users’ needs. Libraries using these services are seeing drastic reductions in the time it takes to perform routine tasks because of the integration between libraries, applications, partners, and data.

First discussed almost ten years ago, the processing philosophy known as “more product, less process” (MPLP) remains hotly contested among members of the archival community. Using the collection of Dr. J. Renwick Jackson as a case study, I highlight the importance of a theme heavily emphasized in Mark Greene’s and Dennis Meissner’s landmark article: flexibility. Selectively utilizing MPLP would prove useful when dealing with large quantities of semi-valuable material and metal fasteners—thereby allowing the project to be completed within 160 work hours. The Biggest Winner: Using Statistics To Assess The Effectiveness Of An E-Resources Promotional Campaign, Amy Fry

In the fall of 2011, librarians at Bowling Green State University were given the opportunity to compete for a $100 Amazon.com gift card by promoting an underused database. Usage statistics were tracked throughout the semester and compared to those for the same time period from the previous year. Eight of the twelve databases promoted rose in use. This article discusses the project methodology and uses its outcomes to assess the effectiveness of a range of marketing techniques for electronic resources, present hypotheses to account for some declines in usage, and demonstrate the value of distributed, personalized promotion for library resources.

Let’s Talk About It: Muslim Journeys brought together scholars, students and community members to gain new perspectives on Muslim culture. The project sought to familiarize public audiences with the people, places, history, faith and cultures of Muslims in the U.S. and around the world.

Programs included panel discussions, film screenings, research presentations and related lectures. In addition, several campus and community members participated in a five-part book discussion moderated by project scholars.

New to this chapter in the Eighth Edition are e-resources that can be offered as alternatives to print resources. While the e-resources may not be as comprehensive as the print resources, they can provide some good information in the event that access to print resources is not possible. All of the print resources listed are appropriate for a basic library reference collection or circulating collection and most are appropriate for home libraries. From cocktails to cockatiels, this chapter supports a wide variety of reader interests.

What do acquisitions policies and workflows look like in next-generation systems? How can institutions leverage automated processes to improve efficiency, and what happens when you also belong to a consortium that is looking to increase collaboration? The Orbis Cascade Alliance is a consortium of 37 public and private academic institutions in Oregon, Washington, and Idaho. In January 2012, the Alliance began a 2-year process of migrating all 37 institutions to a shared ILS. A committee comprised of seven Research and Instruction Librarians at Grand Valley State University met to analyze, evaluate, and recommend changes to a newly-implemented librarian instruction evaluation form. Prior to the creation of this form, instruction assessment forms were used on an individual, ad hoc basis for personal self-evaluation. In 2010, there was a grassroots effort to trial a standardized form, but it did not result in widespread adoption among teaching librarians beyond the duration of the project.

Targeting Point Of Need To Increase Traffic To Library Resources, James C. Miller

This paper examines the effect of creating LibGuides tailored to a student’s point of need and focuses on their potential to boost usage of library resources. In this study, LibGuides were designed for specific assignments and introduced to students during library instruction sessions. Pre‐ and Post‐LibGuide web traffic suggests that LibGuides increased web traffic to library resources. This article suggests that library resources should not only provide sources for assignments but also assist a student through the stages of completing an assignment. As a corollary benefit, creation of assignment‐specific LibGuides increased collaboration and discussion between faculty and librarians.
