The Northwest Archivists Mentoring Program: A Case Study, Donna E. Mccrea, Elizabeth A. Nielsen, Anne Foster

Mansfield Library Faculty Publications

The Northwest Archivists (NWA), a regional archival association in the Pacific Northwest, established a formal mentoring program in 2007. A pilot phase of the program ran for 2 years and included both formative and summative assessments from participants. This case study documents NWA’s experiences designing and managing a mentoring program within a volunteer-run professional association, reflects on the program’s successes and challenges, and recommends areas for future investigation.

Library Space Assessment: User Learning Behaviors In The Library, Susan Montgomery

Library space assessment in academic libraries is beginning to attract attention in the research literature. Libraries need to uncover how as an informal learning space, it contributes to student learning on campus. The Olin Library sought to learn the role of library space in our users’ learning. We surveyed users about their learning behaviors in a specific space prior to a scheduled renovation and then in the same space afterward. We wanted to determine how the renovation changed users’ perceptions of their learning behaviors in that space.

Objective: To support the assessment and improvement of research data management (RDM) practices to increase its reliability, this paper describes the development of a capability maturity model (CMM) for RDM. Improved RDM is now a critical need, but low awareness of – or lack of – data management is still common among research projects.

Methods: A CMM includes four key elements: key practices, key process areas, maturity levels, and generic processes. These elements were determined for RDM by a review and synthesis of the published literature on and best practices for RDM.

Breaking Records: The History Of Bibliographic Records And Their Influence In Conceptualizing Bibliographic Data, Rachel I. Clarke

A bibliographic record is a conceptual whole that includes all bibliographic information about a resource together in one place. With the Semantic Web, individual data statements are linked across the web. This position article argues that the traditional conceptualization of bibliographic records affects the affordances and limitations of that data. A historical analysis of the development of bibliographic records contrasted with the Semantic Web model reveals how the “record” model shaped library cataloging and the implications on library catalogs today. Reification of the record model for bibliographic data hampers possibilities for innovation in cataloging, inspiring a reconceptualization of bibliographic description.

Aaron Hillel Swartz (November 8, 1986 – January 11, 2013) was an American computer programmer, writer, political organizer and Internet Hacktivist.

Swartz was involved in the development of the web feed format RSS, the organization Creative Commons, the website framework web.py and the social news site, Reddit, in which he became a partner after its merger with his company, Infogami. Swartz's later work focused on sociology, civic awareness and activism.

He helped launch the Progressive Change Campaign Committee in 2009 to learn more about effective online activism. In 2010 he became a research fellow at Harvard University's Safra Research Lab …

Edward P. "Ned" Kirby, a native of Whitman, Massachusetts, was a longtime Republican politician in the state. After graduating from the College of the Holy Cross and Boston College Law School, he joined the Army during the Korean War and served as a Lieutenant in the Judge Advocate General’s Corps from 1952-1955. He was elected to the Massachusetts House of Representatives three consecutive terms from 1961-1966, representing the 5th Plymouth District. Kirby was the youngest Republican in the House when he was first elected. From 1968-1976 he served as Plymouth County Commissioner. In 1981 he was elected to the Massachusetts …

The poet, novelist and nonfiction writer May Sarton was born in Belgium in 1912, but relocated with her parents to Cambridge, MA at an early age. Her literary career began with the publication of a collection of poetry in 1937; The Single Hound, her first novel, appeared the following year. Sarton published nearly 20 collections of poetry, 20 novels, 13 works of nonfiction, and two children’s books during her career.

Sarton received awards and grants from the Poetry Society of America, the Guggenheim Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Unitarian Universalist Women's Federation. In addition, she …

At the 2013 CALI Conference on Law School Computing, Professor James Milles, professor and former library director of the SUNY Buffalo Law School, presented his draft paper positing that academic law libraries are doomed. The author presented his contrasting viewpoints in the same session. This paper is based on his presentation and has been updated to account for adoption of the revised law school accreditation standards approved by the ABA Council on Legal Education and Admissions to the Bar in 2014. Distance learners, and in particular distance graduate students, can be a neglected portion of the student body; however, the library needs for this growing student group are real and important. This paper explores an Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) Assessment in Action: Academic Library and Student Success project which examined two different instructional methods offered to students in an online graduate education programme. Specifically, the study assessed the effect of an online tutorial and individual contact with a librarian. The tutorial showed a statistical difference between pre-and post-test results. The Dimensions Of Library Service Quality: A Confirmatory Factor Analysis Of The Libqual+ Instrument, Jody Condit Fagan

The LibQUAL + instrument has been widely adopted by libraries to evaluate user perceptions of library service quality. Studies combining groups (e.g., Lane et al., 2012) have shown high correlations between two factors, suggesting the possibility that a two-factor model may fit as well as the three-factor model theorized by the developers. Also, previous studies have not closely examined residuals to analyze local misfit in the context of theory but instead have often correlated error terms to improve model fit.
