Identifying The Effect Of Open Access On Citations Using A Panel Of Science Journals, Mark J. Mccabe, Christopher M. Snyder
Dartmouth Scholarship
An open‐access journal allows free online access to its articles, obtaining revenue from fees charged to submitting authors or from institutional support. Using panel data on science journals, we are able to circumvent problems plaguing previous studies of the impact of open access on citations. In contrast to the huge effects found in these previous studies, we find a more modest effect: moving from paid to open access increases cites by 8% on average in our sample. The benefit is concentrated among top‐ranked journals. In fact, open access causes a statistically significant reduction in cites to the bottom‐ranked journals in …

Alexander Street Press (ASP) has become a leader in providing libraries and institutions access to streaming video and multimedia content. Since 2006, their offerings of online and streaming video databases have grown quickly. Recently, they released Silent Film Online (SFO), a collection of silent films, clips, trailers, and documentaries about filmmaking during the silent film era. ASP pricing is average for this content, and flexible, based on type of institution, budget, and FTE. Annual subscription or one time purchase of perpetual rights are options. Like other ASP online video databases, functionality is high. ASP is currently in beta with a …

The Anchor, Volume 127.17: February 19, 2014, Hope College
The Anchor: 2014
The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Beyond Search: Information Literacy, Special Collections, And The First Year, Stefanie R. Bluemle, Sarah M. Horowitz
Library and Information Science: Faculty Scholarship & Creative Works
Recent research in information literacy (IL) suggests librarians should shift the emphasis of IL instruction toward higher-level concepts rather than search mechanics. This session describes how the Augustana library drew upon the results of local assessments and national research to re-imagine its first-year learning outcomes so as to focus on higher-level skills and recognize the importance of special collections in teaching IL in the college’s required first-year sequence. We address transforming IL pedagogy throughout the library as well as designing special collections as a hands-on learning laboratory.

A Survey Of Student Use Of Sherrill Library, Marilyn Geller, Library Assessment Workgroup
Library Reports
In the summer of 2013, the Sherrill Library Assessment Work Group began work on a project to identify areas where the current physical library facility excels and where it warrants improvement, and to understand how and why students are using physical libraries in general and the Sherrill Library facility specifically. We chose to use an online survey that was distributed to all current EDS students and to all LU students enrolled in at least one class on campus during the fall 2013 semester. The combined population size for both schools totaled 3,675 students. To achieve a margin of error of …
