Student Embargoes Within Institutional Repositories: Faculty Early Transparency Concerns, David Stern Apr 2014

Student Embargoes Within Institutional Repositories: Faculty Early Transparency Concerns, David Stern

Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library

Libraries encourage students to utilize Institutional Repositories (IRs) to house e-portfolios that demonstrate their skills and experiences. This is especially important for students when applying for jobs and admission into graduate schools. However, within the academic sphere there are legitimate reasons why some faculty-student collaboration efforts should not be documented and openly shared in institutional repositories. The need for the protection of ideas and processes prior to faculty publication can be in direct conflict with the intention for institutional repositories to promote the excellent efforts of students. This is certainly true in laboratory situations where details of experiments and research …

Culture-Based Interpretation Of Projected Destination Images: A Semantic Network Analysis, Menglu Gao Apr 2014

Culture-Based Interpretation Of Projected Destination Images: A Semantic Network Analysis, Menglu Gao

Open Access Theses

This study attempts to explore destination image interpretation in the context of two cultural groups (US and China) and two information sources (Blog and Destination Management Organization website). Semantic Network Analysis was employed to obtain a visual representation and comparison of perceived destination image categories of Marrakesh across groups. Computer-Aided Textual Analysis software, AutoMap3.0 Program and ROST Content Mining System, were used initially for data preparation and keywords analysis, and UCINET 6 was then applied to conduct semantic network analysis such as centrality analysis and network structure measurements. The results indicated that the perceived image of Marrakesh varies by the …

Learning Leadership, Susan David Demaine Apr 2014

Learning Leadership, Susan David Demaine

Articles by Maurer Faculty

It is hard to talk about leadership without sounding clichéd, but it truly was “a dark and stormy night” that began my recent tr ip to the American Association of Law Libraries’ 2014 Leadership Academy. Fortunately, although the rainy drive to Chicago seemed an ill omen, the Leadership Academy turned out to be engaging, instructive, and replete with networking opportunities.

Engaging With Research And Resources In Music History Courses, Jennifer Oates Apr 2014

Engaging With Research And Resources In Music History Courses, Jennifer Oates

Publications and Research

With the ever-expanding sea of resources available to students today, it is now more important than ever to teach students how to navigate, assess, and interpret resources. Given the ease of access to information, students tend to seek out the path of least resistance, most often a Google search and/or Wikipedia. Their unfamiliarity with print resources, such as thematic catalogues, means they are missing out on significant music scholarship that is not available online or through Google. Today’s students have grown up searching the internet. The single-search approach of a web search leaves many students confused by terms like …
