MSU Libraries Reports
This report on the Missouri State University Libraries was based upon surveys and focus sessions. The initial survey was conducted in fall, 2011 with focus sessions in spring, 2012 and a report in summer, 2012. The intended cycle was to conduct a survey every other year, and in the subsequent investigations focus on specific questions of interest to the Libraries. Subsequently in fall of 2013 the Survey Group (Cline, Herrick, Jones, Lambert, and Stout) conducted a second survey focusing on students and library spaces, and on faculty and perceptions about student use patterns and information literacy or readiness and about …

E-Content Statistics Schedule: Get It Together And Manage The Chaos Of Usage Statistics, Lanette Garza
Library Faculty Research
For years, the Coates Library at Trinity University has collected detailed usage statistics, but this valuable data was not reviewed on a consistent basis and most librarians did not know where to look for the data. In my first few months as the new E-Content Analysis and Assessment Librarian, I became overwhelmed by the amount of data I was pulling and distraught over how to organize the many reports I was to provide to the librarians and administrators. It quickly became apparent to me that I would need to get it together and timeline the reports. Not only would this …

How can an "old space" like Special Collections be repurposed to meet evolving information literacy learning goals? This presentation will address ways in which a traditional library space can be reimagined as a place to engage students in affective learning at the beginning of the research process. By crafting activities for students that emphasize exploration and open-ended discovery, librarians and faculty can help students slow down and approach research more creatively. In the session, we (two librarians and a teaching faculty member) will share specific outcomes, activities, and the results of our assessments.
Participants will:
- Understand the importance of affective …

Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.
The number of scholarly documents available on the web is estimated using capture/recapture methods by studying the coverage of two major academic search engines: Google Scholar and Microsoft Academic Search. Our estimates show that at least 114 million English-language scholarly documents are accessible on the web, of which Google Scholar has nearly 100 million. Of these, we estimate that at least 27 million (24%) are freely available since they do not require a subscription or payment of any kind. In addition, at a finer scale, we also estimate the number of scholarly documents on the web for fifteen fields: Agricultural …

Fun (And Added Value) Things To Do With Your Webpac, Leigh Ann Duncan
University Libraries' Staff Publications
For many libraries, the WebPAC is still the main and only public access catalog for the collection. The presentation will include some add-on items that libraries have incorporated into their WebPACs to make them more functional, accessible and valuable to their patrons. Items to be presented include QR codes, SMS text of data, virtual bookplates, pictures of toys or artwork, context-sensitive help, and data feeds from companies like LibraryThing for Libraries or Amazon. An integration of the library catalog with Facebook, LibraryElf, and a locally customized kids' catalog will also be shown.

Faculty Presentations
After adding the discovery layer 1Search at Hope College, we had to quickly adapt our cataloging workflows to reflect our library's holdings within this product. Quarterly loads of the institution's full catalog holdings are sent in MARC record format, as well as daily updates and deletes to keep the records in 1Search current. This poster aims to present workflows for sending discovery layer updates and deletes, as well as considerations for technical services departments when deciding on discovery layer services. Academic libraries which currently have a discovery layer or are considering one will find this poster most helpful.

Preparing Librarians To Be Campus Leaders Through Mapping And Integrating Information Literacy Into Curriculum, Sharon A. Weiner, Li Wang
Libraries Faculty and Staff Presentations
Curriculum mapping is a process by which curricula are methodically examined to determine where information literacy (IL) capabilities are, or should be taught during formal coursework. Curriculum integration is the process of intentionally integrating IL capability at the points in coursework when students need to master those capabilities and competencies. During this session, librarians will develop an understanding of curriculum mapping and how to integrate IL in curricula. This knowledge prepares librarians for campus leadership, since the curriculum is the primary focus of teaching and learning and affects the entire campus.
The curriculum in higher education can be viewed as: …

Wikipedia will be 13 years old in 2014. It is ranked the 6thmost visited site on the World Wide Web. Many librarians and information specialists have a love hate relationship with this open access, free internet encyclopedia. Searching for agricultural information sometimes exposes a lack of information or existence of entries on specific topics, inaccurate information, or results in the frustration of a research dead end from unreferenced articles. Wikipedia is, of course, a collaboratively edited resource. A Wikipedia WikiProjectis a group of contributors working together to improve the Wikipedia information and the pages on a particular topic or subject …
