The LibGuides Subcommittee conducted a qualitative user study of the DePaul University Library’s Research Guides during the Fall 2013 quarter. This exempt study received approval from the Institutional Review Board and included 15 participants from different age ranges and student roles within the university. This user study investigated how users actually perceive, navigate through, and use these guides. The results of the user study will help us determine better ways to meet student needs through further development of the research guides.

Independent learning activities, when coupled with reflection, are effective in providing an orientation to the library in particular and “academic life” in general. After participating in a self-guided library activity and reflecting on the process, students in DePaul’s First Year Experience program are able to articulate how the library can contribute to their success as academic learners.

As the recent celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington demonstrated, numerous digital projects and numerous scholarly and popular print publications have made the grander stories and lessons of the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s widely available. But what about the lesser known heroes and the local and regional episodes that have not received the same level of interest? This presentation was given to subject specialist librarians at Purdue University to engage the topic of research data in the context of collection development. The Purdue University Research Repository (PURR, http://purr.purdue.edu) creates opportunities for librarians to interact with researchers, including email notifications when a project is created, when a grant is awarded, and when a dataset is submitted for publication. Next, three subject specialist librarians from Agriculture, Engineering, and Mathematics each shared recent examples of their experiences in working with researchers to acquire new data collections for PURR.
