Review Of How To Manage Processing In Archives And Special Collections, Jillian Cuellar
Review Of How To Manage Processing In Archives And Special Collections, Jillian Cuellar
Journal of Western Archives
Learning to process archival collections as an intern or student processor constitutes many archivists’ first practical understanding of the archival enterprise. Though this experience is an excellent hands-on opportunity for many nascent archivists to sharpen their project management skills, it does not fully prepare them to manage an archival processing program. Few students in archival graduate programs receive in-depth management training, leaving many to learn effective management techniques without formal guidance. With How to Manage Processing in Archives and Special Collections, Pam Hackbart-Dean and Elizabeth Slomba set out to offer archivists a comprehensive, practical toolbox for managing a processing …
Pronoun Production Order In A Gender-Neutral Language: A Single Case Study Of A Typically Developing Indonesian Child, Bernard A.J Jap
Pronoun Production Order In A Gender-Neutral Language: A Single Case Study Of A Typically Developing Indonesian Child, Bernard A.J Jap
Paradigma: Jurnal Kajian Budaya
Research in children with normal language development has shown that there is a certain order in the production and learning of pronominal forms. To one’s knowledge, there has yet to be a study on the pronoun development of Indonesian speaking children whose native language do not distinguish between the nominative-accusative form (e.g. in English, I/me – Indonesian, saya/saya) and at the same time being gender neutral (e.g. in English, he/she – Indonesian, dia/dia). The present study follows the personal pronoun development of a (Jakarta) Indonesian-speaking child from 24 months to 46 months of age.
Code-Mixing Among Students Of English Literature 2009 In Universitas Indonesia, Andari Ditya
Code-Mixing Among Students Of English Literature 2009 In Universitas Indonesia, Andari Ditya
Paradigma: Jurnal Kajian Budaya
People today are more globalized than before, and most of them are now able to speak more than one language. It also happens among the English Literature students 2009 in Universitas Indonesia who are able to speak English in their daily conversation. This may lead to the phenomenon called code- mixing. However, this code-mixing focuses more on written communication in their social media’s status. There are two major points that this paper attempts to make. First, the description of code- mixing itself according to the theory given by Wardhaugh (1986) and Hoffman (1991) and how it can be reflected into …

Fulla’S And Barbie’S Images In Relation To Women’S Beauty And Cultural Difference, Juwita Anindya
Paradigma: Jurnal Kajian Budaya
Most people know Barbie, a doll that conveys some values about culture and about the concept of women’s beauty. However, Barbie only represents one specific culture, which is Western culture. Different with Western culture, Eastern culture needs a doll who can represent their values. Then, Fulla appears as the representative of Eastern beauty. Fulla conveys some values about Eastern culture and about the new concept of women’s beauty which are different from Barbie. Fulla’s appearance here is thought can emphasize the cultural differences among the society, but it can give another choice to shape people’s new thought about the beauty …

What Should Science Reference Librarians Do With Books Classified As Science That Aren't Science: Revisiting The Well-Known Worlds In Collision By Immanuel Velikovsky As A Case Study., Philip Barnett Ph.D.
What Should Science Reference Librarians Do With Books Classified As Science That Aren't Science: Revisiting The Well-Known Worlds In Collision By Immanuel Velikovsky As A Case Study., Philip Barnett Ph.D.
Publications and Research
Students browsing the science sections in their library may naturally assume that all of the books are scientifically valid and accurate. Science collections may also contain books that may not now be accurate, either because they are out-of-date, or never belonged there. While out-of-date knowledge can sometimes be beneficial, invalid books can only mislead. The well-known book Worlds in Collision by Immanuel Velikovsky is a case study on how librarians can handle such books. For these books, an explanatory note can be placed on the book's online catalog entry or even in the book. The book can also be weeded …

Incorporating Online Instruction In Academic Libraries: Getting Ahead Of The Curve, Pauline Dewan, Michael Steeleworthy
Incorporating Online Instruction In Academic Libraries: Getting Ahead Of The Curve, Pauline Dewan, Michael Steeleworthy
Library Publications
A sea change in higher education is shaping the way many libraries deliver instruction to their students and faculty. Years of technological innovation and changes in the way that people discover and use information has made online instruction an essential part of a library's teaching and learning program. In order to evaluate our library's online instruction program and to determine its future goals, we analyzed the technology, pedagogical models, organizational structures, administrative supports, and partnerships we would need in order to succeed. Our findings may be useful for libraries reassessing their own online instruction programs.

Current Practices In Distance Learning Library Services At Urban And Metropolitan Universities, J B. Hill, Hongyu Li, Carol Macheak
Faculty Scholarship
Urban and metropolitan universities serve a diverse population of learners, including nontraditional and part-time students, many taking courses on-campus, off-campus at remote locations and/or online. Libraries at these institutions are committed to providing collections and services to support students and faculty engaged in both traditional and online environments. This article reports on a survey of libraries at the member institutions of the Coalition of Urban and Metropolitan Universities (CUMU) that identifies the services, activities and policies that urban and metropolitan libraries have developed to provide library resources to their distance learners.
(E-Book) Patron Driven Acquisitions (Pda): An Annotated Bibliography, Thomas Kaczorowski
(E-Book) Patron Driven Acquisitions (Pda): An Annotated Bibliography, Thomas Kaczorowski
Staff Publications
Patron Driven Acquisitions (PDA), also known as Demand Driven Acquisitions (DDA) and Purchase on Demand (POD), has been used by libraries since the early 1990’s. PDA allows libraries to acquire items based on the immediate needs of their patrons, often without library intervention. With the arrival of e-books in the late 1990’s, libraries soon began including them in their PDA workflows. PDA is controversial for several reasons, and PDA of E-books adds further issues to the debate. This bibliography covers PDA and the issues academic libraries face when devising a PDA program. Articles outline the benefits and problems of print …
Reenvisioning Access Services: A Survey Of Access Services Departments In Arl Libraries, Duane E Wilson
Reenvisioning Access Services: A Survey Of Access Services Departments In Arl Libraries, Duane E Wilson
Faculty Publications
In spring 2012 a study was undertaken to investigate the current structure of Access Services in ARL Libraries and to understand current and future trends in departmental organization and cross-training. The survey determined that Access Services Departments in ARL Libraries typically contain a core set of services, though their structure is based on local needs. Most ARL Libraries have not experimented with combining reference and circulation functions and have only begun to consolidate traditional Access Services areas at single service points. The author recommends that Access Services be organized around a public services point instead of organizing the department around …

Measuring And Applying Data About Users In The Seton Hall Library, Rachel E. Volentine, Lisa M. Rose-Wiles, Carol Tenopir
Charleston Library Conference
We present data on how faculty and students at Seton Hall University use scholarly articles and books, how the library can present its findings to stakeholders, and how librarians can learn from these findings to better meet user needs. The data were gathered using questionnaire surveys of university faculty, graduate students, and undergraduate students as part of the IMLS Lib-Value project and based on Tenopir and King Studies conducted since 1977. Many questions used the critical incident of the last article and book reading to enable analysis of the characteristics of readings, in addition to characteristics of readers. Seton Hall’s …

The panelists addressed several important aspects of launching a discovery system in an academic library, such as Implementation; Information Literacy; and Assessment, Usability and Customization. The implementation component included technical aspects, business requirements, enhancing the operability of link resolvers, launch preparation, and implementation success. The information literacy portion addressed how academic reference services and library instruction have been transformed because of EDS. Assessment, Usability and Customization focused on customizing the search …

Positive Feedback: Using Interlibrary Loan Transaction Log Data To Inform Collection Development, Teresa Negrucci, Forrest Link
Charleston Library Conference
The Associate Librarian for Access Services and Collection Management at Brown University Library requested an analysis of user and bibliographic data for faculty requests in the BorrowDirect and ILLiad systems to provide some insight on possible gaps in the library’s monographic collection from the faculty perspective. They processed and analyzed the data from both of these systems to determine these gaps and find a way to fix them. This paper explains their steps and provides a brief look at the positive feedback on their approach, all of which helped them to achieve a more successful process of collection development and …

Positively Perplexing E-Books: Digital Natives’ Perceptions Of Electronic Information Resources, Tara T. Cataldo, Amy G. Buhler
Charleston Library Conference
Anecdotal evidence from user surveys and the experiences of information professionals portray a picture that today’s students (i.e., “digital natives”) do not differentiate between the variety of information resources online. The issue of container only becomes problematic to these students when they have to produce a scholarly work and cite their information sources. Then the question becomes, “What is it?” This paper will present preliminary data from a survey of university students on how they recognize and label electronic information resources. The authors will explore such questions as: Do users recognize an e-book as a book? If not, how do …

Everything That’S Wrong With E-Book Statistics: A Comparison Of E-Book Packages, Karin Byström
Charleston Library Conference
This poster presentation highlights the problems that exist in defining “a download” for e-books. Even though there is a COUNTER code of practice, a download can still be defined as either a page, chapter or title use. Many e-book publishers don’t follow COUNTER at all, and then the differences are even bigger. Libraries face many problems because of this, and this poster aims to raise awareness on the problems concerning analyzing e-book usage statistics.

Striving For Uniqueness: Data-Driven Database Deselection, Jeremy M. Brown, Geoffrey P. Timms
Charleston Library Conference
As libraries endure an ongoing crisis of available funds to meet inflating electronic content costs, the idea to dispatch the perceived least important e-resources to help balance the budget is a tempting solution. Mercer University Libraries recognizes the challenge of finding areas in which to cut back on its resources. They closely examine their subscriptions to prioritize their patrons’ needs, maintain budgetary equilibrium, and remain true to their goals. The Library Systems Department has worked to develop their own tool to assist decision makers with pertinent information about the uniqueness of both their full text and index databases and packages, …
