The renowned Irish poet Seamus Heaney won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1995. Heaney’s first major work of poetry was Death of a Naturalist, published in 1966. The first poem in this publication, Digging, would be among Heaney’s most famous, and helped establish his reputation as a poetic voice of Ireland. Heaney would continue to achieve acclaim though the publication of numerous poetry collections. In the mid-1970s Heaney began giving poetry readings in the United States and in 1981 became a visiting professor at Harvard University. Notation is a fundamental component of a classification scheme, especially library and bibliographic classification. However, notation is often considered an afterthought or auxiliary to classification itself. With the advances in technology, classification systems, including their notation, must evolve. What, if any, possibilities lie beyond alphanumeric characters and symbols? The author explores the possible use of color as classificatory notation by looking at the traditional qualities of notation and the classificatory needs it must accommodate, various theories and standards of color, and their possible applications to classification notation. In this Introduction to Data Science eBook, a series of data problems of increasing complexity is used to illustrate the skills and capabilities needed by data scientists. The open source data analysis program known as "R" and its graphical user interface companion "R-Studio" are used to work with real data examples to illustrate both the challenges of data science and some of the techniques used to address those challenges. To the greatest extent possible, real datasets reflecting important contemporary issues are used as the basis of the discussions.

This paper discusses the needs and importance of research data management and introduces the concept of research data management as an infrastructure service. Although many resources have been made available for research data management, most of them are developed as “islands” and lack linking mechanisms. The lack of integrated and interconnected resources has contributed to high cost and duplicated efforts in data management operations. The vision of research data management as an infrastructure service is not only to improve the efficiency of research data management but also the productivity of the research enterprise. Brief Biographical Note:

Conrad Potter Aiken (1889-1973) was born in Savannah, Georgia on August 5, 1889. After the tragic death of his parents, Aiken moved to Massachusetts, where he would eventually attend Harvard University and distinguish himself as President of the Harvard Advocate and co-editor with T.S. Eliot. Aiken was a successful poet and novelist, receiving the Pulitzer Prize in 1930 or his Selected Poems. Other awards included the Shelley Memorial Award (the award’s first recipient), National Medal for Literature, the Gold Medal for Poetry from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the Bollingen Prize, and the National …

The Massachusetts Readers Association, or the MRA, is a professional non-profit organization of individuals whose primary purpose is to improve the quality and level of literacy in the state of Massachusetts. Though the wealth of opportunities mobile technologies provide to libraries is widely acknowledged, some libraries continue to experience challenges when incorporating these technologies. These challenges include technological illiteracy, prohibitive cost, and the effect of these technologies on the traditional library environment. An examination of a variety of current literature and studies related to the incorporation of mobile technologies is necessary to determine how best to tackle these challenges, and suggests several methods of incorporating mobile technologies into academic libraries. However, there is another group of individuals who are often left out of the record, although their contributions are just as critical in the formation of scholarly journals. When an education professor and a reference librarian sought to improve the quality of undergraduate student research, their partnership led to a new focus on assessing the research process in addition to the product. In this study, we reflect on our collaborative experience introducing information literacy as the foundation for undergraduate teacher education research. We examine the outcomes of this collaboration, focusing on the assessment of the process. Using a mixed methods approach, we found that direct instruction supporting effective research strategies positively impacted student projects. Our data also suggest that undergraduate students benefit from not only sound research strategies, …

This article explores how Methodist clergy in Virginia tended to the spiritual needs of their congregations in the context of war. It also discusses the way that clergy worked to make their ideas on the war and its progression known through newspapers, sermons, addresses, and government-recognized days of fasting and prayer. As the largest religious denomination in the South during the war the Methodist Church was in a position to not only offer support , but to shape the opinions of the Confederate people.

Beginning in 2004, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) requires institutions seeking accreditation to develop a Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) to improve student learning. QEP topics may be focused on a single educational initiative or may combine several efforts in order to enhance and assess student learning. While some plans have focused on information literacy specifically, a fair number of the QEP proposals submitted to SACS between 2007-2011 have integrated information literacy learning outcomes as part of another topic. The author of this paper contends that the revision of the ACRL’s Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education must be accompanied by a critical, conscious, and conscientious reception by librarians and information literacy advocates.

When Data Curation Isn’T: A Redefinition For Liberal Arts Universities, Megan Toups, Michael J. Hughes

Data curation is one way that libraries are extending traditional services to meet the changing needs of patrons. Requirements from research funders have placed increased pressure on grant recipients to create Data Management Plans and to securely store raw data. Research universities have stepped up to provide comprehensive data support services. Despite discrepancies in funding and staff, smaller institutions can similarly provide robust services by focusing on their strengths, such as interdepartmental collaboration, flexibility, and rapid turnaround time. This article details how librarians at Trinity University adapted the larger practice of curation to meet local data management needs.

Librarians and researchers have long used citation management systems as research tools to help scholars organize their work, improve workflows, and ultimately save time. For many years, RefWorks has been the dominant citation management tool in many parts of Canada: the maturity of the product and its integration with many scholarly databases reassures users that it works well with these resources. However, a number of competitors now offer citation management systems that are as strong as RefWorks but offer different features to the user, therefore warranting a comparison with this leading tool. Dr. Annabelle M. Melville was a Commonwealth Professor Emerita of History at Bridgewater State University and a leading American Catholic Historian. She was the author of definitive biographies of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton, the first native-born citizen of the United States to be canonized by the Roman Catholic Church; Archbishop John Carroll, the first bishop of the American hierarchy; Cardinal John Lefebvre de Cheverus, the first bishop of Boston; and Archbishop Louis William DuBourg, SS, a nineteenth century bishop of New Orleans.
