Serving Those Who Serve: Outreach And Instruction For Student Cadets And Veterans, Nancy E. Fawley, Nikki Kyrsak

Library Faculty Research

Student cadets and veterans new to college have unique academic needs, and the abrupt switch from civilian to Corps life for new students at a military university can be challenging. Likewise, transitioning from military life to civilian life as a veteran student can be overwhelming. The libraries at Norwich University and The University of Alabama are supporting programs to assist new students in the transition from civilian to Corps life and from military to civilian life, respectively. While these students are at different stages of their military careers, cadets and veterans have common attributes that inform library support and instruction, …

Measuring (The Value Of) Space: A Case Study Of A Collaborative Assessment Of An Academic Library’S Physical Collections, Diana Reid, Margo Smith

The Southeastern Librarian

The Ekstrom Library at the University of Louisville decided it would be valuable to obtain a detailed picture of the space usage in the Library’s physical collections, in order to help resolve ongoing space problems, to create a working document for continued maintenance of the Library’s physical collections and to provide data for library administration to use in support of future space planning. To this end, the Physical Collections Task Force (Task Force) was formed. The Task Force’s charge was as follows: “To determine present and future space needs for the Ekstrom Library collections; produce a written statement describing the …

Starting From Scratch: Implementing A Successful, Multifaceted Information Literacy Program For The First-Year Course, Anthony Holderied

The Southeastern Librarian

This study describes a program created from scratch in which collaboration is initiated by librarians with teaching faculty in the first-year program to provide information literacy skills to incoming freshmen. The program is not only successful logistically, but is designed with assessment needs and evidence of student learning in mind. Additionally, the program design takes into account the needs of learners through utilization of a variety of learning activities and teaching tools that include group interaction, web-based tutorials, individual assignments, and peer-learning.

Maximizing One-Shot Impact: Using Pre-Test Responses In The Information Literacy Classroom, Andrea Brooks Apr 2013

Maximizing One-Shot Impact: Using Pre-Test Responses In The Information Literacy Classroom, Andrea Brooks

The Southeastern Librarian

New librarians accepting instructional roles in academic libraries inherit classrooms which have evolved beyond the traditional “sage on a stage” model of bibliographic instruction to more active, student-centered information literacy sessions. However, as in the past, these are still primarily one-shot sessions. Assessment is used to make the most of these fifty-minute meetings and might include pre-tests, post-tests, and various classroom assessment techniques (CATs). Assessment provides important benchmark data to measure student information literacy skills, and the results inform and guide instruction librarians. Each assessment method has unique advantages; however, this article will focus specifically on the pre-test and the …

Implementing Discovery At The University Of North Alabama, Amy Butler, Leigh Thompson Apr 2013

Implementing Discovery At The University Of North Alabama, Amy Butler, Leigh Thompson

The Southeastern Librarian

Collier Library, the main library at the University of North Alabama (UNA), provides the campus community with access to over 150 electronic resources. With so many available options, our students often overlook valuable databases. Analysis of usage statistics had shown that some of our most expensive databases had the highest cost per retrieval. Therefore, finding a product that would encourage users to utilize the full range of available databases became a top priority. In the summer of 2010, the Collier Library staff began to seriously investigate the discovery tool marketplace. We felt that the “single search box” concept of discovery …

Crafting Assessment Questions: Creating The Tools To Assess Information Literacy Objectives For Art And Design: A Workshop, Rebecca Feind, Kathy Clarke Apr 2013

Crafting Assessment Questions: Creating The Tools To Assess Information Literacy Objectives For Art And Design: A Workshop, Rebecca Feind, Kathy Clarke

Faculty and Staff Publications

Now that information literacy standards for higher education have been created and are commonly incorporated within university curricula, assessing student mastery of the objectives is the next step in creating a measurable information literacy program. In addition to responding to institutional needs for data on student learning, assessment data is a valuable resource for updating instruction programs based on student knowledge and performance. While many librarians have vast amounts of anecdotal knowledge about what students know, being able to gather hard data on what students learn from online and in-person instruction can quantify the strengths and needs of your instruction …

A History Of The Seventh-Day Adventist Periodical Index, Part 3: Still A Work In Progress, Daniel Drazen Apr 2013

A History Of The Seventh-Day Adventist Periodical Index, Part 3: Still A Work In Progress, Daniel Drazen

Faculty Publications

The first two parts of the history of the Seventh-day Adventist Periodical Index1 are what they claim to be. They’re histories, written with scholarship, objectivity and distance. I can claim none of this for my contribution to the history of the Index for one simple reason: I still work here. What this paper represents is a memoir rather than a history. It is about what I’ve been doing for a living for 20 years, longer than any of my predecessors. Whatever scholarship I practice will involve me racking my brain for memories as the primary source, rather than relying on …

Depictions Of Religion In Children’S Picture Books, Don A. Wicks, Darin Freeburg, Doug Goldsmith

Faculty Publications

How children are introduced to concepts of faith is a sensitive matter. One approach used by both religious and secular organizations is children’s literature, including children’s picture books. Picture books are books primarily for preschoolers. The books tell a story using illustrations and few words. This paper offers an exploratory study of how children are introduced to religion and spirituality through illustrative techniques and textual content in such literature. A content analysis of illustrations from 12 titles sampled from a larger collection of 21,000 picture books published in the past 40 or more years was conducted. The current sample comes …

A Bibliometric Analysis Of The Literature Of Ifla Journal During 2001-2010, Sarwesh Pareek

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Bibliometric is an emerging thrust area of research and has now become a well established part of information research and a quantitative approach to the description of documents. Bibliometric has grown out of the realization that literature is growing and changing out of a rate with which no librarian or information worker equipped with traditional bibliographic skills and methods could keep abreast. The present study shows that journals are most cited form of communication amongst the library and information scientists and the source journal is the most cited publication.

IFLA Journal is one of the premier official journals of the …

Hidden Surveillance On Consumer Health Information Websites, Jacquelyn A. Burkell, Alexandre Fortier Mar 2013

Hidden Surveillance On Consumer Health Information Websites, Jacquelyn A. Burkell, Alexandre Fortier

FIMS Publications

Behavioural tracking presents a significant privacy risk to Canadians, particularly when their online behaviours reveal sensitive information that could be used to discriminate against them. This concern is particularly relevant in the context of online health information seeking, since searches can reveal details about health conditions and concerns that the individual may wish to keep private. The privacy threats are exacerbated because behavioural tracking mechanisms are large invisible to users, and many are unaware of the strategies and mechanisms available to track online behaviour. In this project, we seek to document the behavioural tracking practices of consumer health websites, and …

Ex-post-facto design was used for the study and the instruments for data collection were two researcher-developed questionnaires, one for the librarians and the other for the students. Data obtained were analyzed using independent t-test statistics. Results indicated that all the universities investigated are gender sensitive in their employment; both sexes are almost equally represented. The librarians are well experienced staff since 92% of …
