Prospects And Challenges Of Prison Libraries In Ghana: A Case Study Of The Nsawam Medium Security Prisons., Christopher Mfum
Prospects And Challenges Of Prison Libraries In Ghana: A Case Study Of The Nsawam Medium Security Prisons., Christopher Mfum
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
ABSTRACT
The study explored the provision of library services at the Nsawam Medium Security Prison in Ghana. Incarcerated people are confronted with isolation and are often faced with limitations of personal choices and quality decision making. Library services remain an important service in every society that values freedom. The prison library is one of the few places that offer solace and escape in the extremely regulated lives of prisoners. The report is the result of a study into the information needs of prisoners and the resources and services that are available for this special population. A total of 100 male …

How To Formulate A Clinical Question And Effectively Search For The Answer, Neha Shah, Susan Keller
E-Learning Modules
This small group, case-based exercise is geared towards medical students on their pediatric clerkship. The goal of this session is to teach students how to re-frame their clinical questions into a format that allows for more effective and efficient searching of the literature.
I provide this session once a month as a part of the Third-year medical student core lecture series during their inpatient pediatrics rotation. My co-facilitator is a medical librarian. We initially used a lecture format in which we reviewed use of advanced PubMed features with very little interaction from the learners. Based on feedback and evaluations, we …

Public health information service plays a crucial role in upgrading the health status of the population of any country by providing valuable information on issues like health, sanitation, nutrition and family planning.Bangladesh, with one of the highest concentrations of non government organizations in the world, has been grappling with many health related problems including weak and insufficient infrastructure, corruption, population explosion, lack of health professionals, lack of awareness, etc. Although the organizations working in the region are making considerable efforts for reaching out to the larger cross-sections of rural people, their efforts are hampered by various socio-economic problems and …

On March 31, 2010, Access Copyright applied to the Copyright Board to certify a tariff that would govern the relationship between the organization and the members of the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC) and the Association of Community Colleges of Canada (ACCC). Previously, the relationship had been governed by a series of license agreements between the organizations which had been periodically renewed. But Access Copyright chose not to seek renewal of the licenses, and applied to the Board to certify a general tariff that would cover all post-secondary institutions for the period of 2011 through 2013.

Blogging the Library
Well, here we are: my last day of summer internship. I am quite proud of what I accomplished this summer, although I had hoped to be just a little bit farther on the cataloging. Oh, well. It’s not like the books are going anywhere, right? And I’m not going anywhere, either, so hopefully I can finish the cataloging over the course of the fall semester, and continue to add to my LibGuide. [excerpt]

What Do We Do And Why Do We Do It?, Emily Ford
What Do We Do And Why Do We Do It?, Emily Ford
Library Faculty and Staff Publications and Presentations
The library community should develop a philosophy of librarianship. In order to do so the community should engage in a dialogue about what we do and why we do it. Our history with the idea of a philosophy of librarianship is long, yet the library community hasn’t resolved the problem of what that philosophy (or philosophies) should be. Engaging in a reflective and philosophically-based practice of librarianship (a praxis of librarianship), one that frames decision-making and library work with the question: “what we do and why we do it?” will enable the library community to have successful conversations with those …

Blogging the Library
My summer internship experience at the library is officially done. It’s odd to think about just how much I’ve accomplished this summer—I’ve researched Civil War genre painters, learned about nineteenth-century sheet music, installed frames, arranged Union soldiers’ swords—the list goes on. I truly am fortunate to have had such a unique and stimulating experience this summer. [excerpt]
