Academic Librarian Research: A Survey Of Attitudes, Involvement, And Perceived Capabilities, Marie R. Kennedy, Kristine R. Brancolini

Librarian Publications & Presentations

This article reports on the development and results of a recent survey of academic librarians about their attitudes, involvement, and perceived capabilities using and engaging in primary research. The purpose of the survey was to inform the development of a continuing education program in research design. It updates earlier studies of academic librarian research; with the introduction of a confidence scale, it also contributes new insights regarding how prepared librarians believe themselves to be with regard to conducting research. The authors found that confidence in one’s ability to perform the discrete steps in the research process is a statistically significant …

Appreciative Inquiry: A Transformative Approach For Initiating Shared Leadership And Organizational Learning, Mary M. Somerville, Marical Farner

University Libraries Librarian and Staff Articles and Papers

Auraria Library leaders at the University of Colorado Denver, USA employed Appreciative Inquiry (AI) principles, processes, and practices to inclusively redesign organizational structure, social relationships, knowledge systems, and workplace aspirations. Throughout the four year period, from 2008 through 2012,intervention activities employed life generating properties which were appreciative, applicable, provocative, and collaborative. Iterative application of the 4- Cycle intervention model (discovery, dream, design, and destiny) and associated AI principles advanced shared leadership and organizational learning capacities within a revitalized workplace culture. Iterative processes of reflection, reframing, and reinterpretation now sustain ongoing and inclusive inquiry that is appreciative, applicable, provocative, and collaborative.

The Development Of The Web And Its Impact On Libraries And Scholarly Communications, Michael B. Binder Dean Emeritus, University Libraries

DLPS Faculty Publications

In 2011 when I was given the opportunity of taking a research leave to explore a topic of my choice, I immediately thought of the changes in which we find information today both in our work and home lives. This was a natural reaction for me because ever since I had initiated my studies of librarianship and information science, I had been most interested in technology and its impact on libraries. This started with Professor Susan Artandi at Rutgers when I first learned of systems analysis and library automation and reached greater fruition under Professor Leon Montgomery's instruction on programming …

Citation Patterns In Educational Science Theses At The University Of Córdoba, Alexander Maz-Machado, Manuel Torralbo-Rodríguez, Mª Pilar Gutiérrez-Arenas, Francisca Morales Sillero

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

This paper analyses citation patterns in 30 doctoral theses in the field of Education Sciences, submitted at the University of Córdoba (Spain) between 1997 and 2010. A preference was found for citing books as opposed to articles. The most widely-cited journal was a Spanish education-specific publication, Enseñanza de las ciencias. Only a small number of journals from the stock of periodical publications held and managed by the Faculty of Education Sciences Library were cited.

There is significant value in this methodology in regards to adult learning characteristics such as active learning and incorporation of the student's life experience in problem-solving and scenario analysis. The core competencies expected of librarians, as referenced in the statements of various professional associations such as the ALA and SLA, can be …
