Thinking About Technology - Steve Jobs Was Right About Html5, But Was He Right About Digital Publishing?, Darla Jackson

Steve Jobs predicted that HTML5 would replace Adobe Flash, and in November 2011, Adobe announced it would cease developing its Flash Player plug-in for mobile browsers and encourage developers to adopt the HTML5 standard. Ms. Jackson discusses some of the features of HTML5 and suggests that as search engine optimization and usability on mobile devices become increasingly important, law librarians should consider how HTML5 features may prove useful in achieving the goals of the law library. Further, she discusses how HTML5 may also influence the development of legal digital publishing initiatives

Licensed To Share: How Libraries Are Handling Electronic Journal Article Requests, Karen Okamoto

Publications and Research

This questionnaire-based study examines how libraries are now handling electronic journal (e-journal) article requests in both lending and borrowing. With an increasing number of publishers and e-journal content providers permitting interlibrary loan (ILL) sharing, and with the availability of new license management tools and services, many respondents stated that they share e-journal articles. However, problems persist. Respondents cited is- sues such as restrictive licenses, automatic deflection of e-journal article requests, and the lack of information from libraries about what e-journal titles they are licensed to ILL.

Southern Methodist University’s libraries and central IT staff have been working hand in hand for more than 30 years to provide high quality information technology tools in support of the University’s academic mission. The technology might change, the players might change, but the commitment of these two units goes above and beyond to serve University goals. Not intended to document every technological change on campus, this article focuses on the various stages in this fruitful relationship, and explores the organizational, cultural and environmental factors that have sustained this strategic alliance and fostered its growth over the years.

Seeing The Clouds: Teacher Librarian As Broker In Collaborative Planning With Teachers, Sue Kimmel

Teachers engaged in sustained collaboration with a teacher librarian were interviewed about the meaning of that collaboration. The findings suggest that the teachers recognized important contributions of the librarian to instructional planning and classroom instruction including knowledge, legwork, and support. In particular, they understood her role as a broker both to resources and to ideas for using those resources in instruction. While these resources were essential, they were not sufficient; they required a knowledgeable peer who also understood their application to the curriculum and what students were expected to learn. They required a librarian.

When librarians apply critical pedagogy in a classroom, they can both impart knowledge and ignite breakthrough thinking among students. By partnering with professors and decentralizing the power in the classroom, librarians can tap into knowledge that students already possess and encourage them to express their own ideas. This article describes the process in a 200-level literature interpretation course taught primarily to English majors at Arcadia University.

This case study describes an investigation into the data management and sharing practices within an interdisciplinary research lab. The Purdue Water Quality Field Station (WQFS) consists of researchers and graduate students generating data on a range of topics including: water quality, water flow, chemical composition of water, soil composition, soil moisture, and plant biomass. Many of these data are of interest beyond the lab, to other researchers, policy makers, and companies. The purpose of this paper was to identify existing criteria that may be considered in evaluating journals in the scholarship of teaching and learning in agriculture, natural resources, and the life sciences. This can assist faculty authors and evaluators of promotion and tenure cases to explain indicators of the quality of the publications. The commonly accepted criteria are: peer review; acceptance rate; longevity; open access availability; inclusion in indexing/abstracting services; citation analysis; and expert opinion.
