With library users finding their information from other non-library sources, the Harold B. Lee Library at Brigham Young University has great need of a recommender system. The library already has years of checkout data that can be used to jump-start the recommender system's recommendations. Unfortunately, that data is difficult to format in a way that a recommender system can use. With some effort, it can be stored in a graph database and used to generate recommendations for users based on their preferences. Calculating recommendations before they are required and storing them for future use can speed up the amount of …

Consider Anti-Immigration in the United States: A Historical Encyclopedia a newer, narrower, more explicitly academic take on a well-covered topic among reference resources. Since James Ciment’s seminal, four-volume Encyclopedia of American Immigration published in 2001, there has been a variety of encyclopedias published focusing on the United States and immigration. Most recently, 2010 brought another Encyclopedia of American Immigration (unrelated to the previously mentioned work of the same name) edited by Carl L. Bankston and intended for use by the general public and high school/college undergraduates.

With 850 new or significantly revised terms in addition to previously published content, the second edition of the Greenwood Dictionary of Education brings the 2003 version up to date. New content includes selected coverage of terminology from the fields of neuroscience, educational assessment, and technology, as well as updated entries on evolving educational practices and theories. Unfortunately it’s difficult to determine the scope of the additions: as a traditionally-organized alphabetical work without an index, this work—as with most dictionaries—is most useful for known- item searches. In recent years, an emphasis on scientific argumentation in classrooms has brought into focus collaborative consensus-building as an instructional strategy. In these situations, students with differing and competing arguments are asked to work with one another in order to establish a shared perspective. However, the literature suggests that consensus-building can be challenging for students because their interpretations of the argumentative task and context may not enable their productive engagement with counter-arguments and evidence. Few studies have focused on how youth develop agency to organize and participate in online unstructured creative collaborations. This paper describes and analyzes how youth programmers organized collaborative groups in response to a programming “Collab Challenge” in the Scratch Online Community and in an accompanying workshop with high school students. The analyses focused on modalities of online collaborations, determined the breadth of online participation, and examined local teens’ awareness of the online community. “Turn Your Cell Phones On” Mobile Phone Polling As A Tool For Teaching Information Literacy, Andy Burkhardt, Sarah Faye Cohen

While mobile technologies are ubiquitous among students and increasingly used in many aspects of libraries, they have yet to gain traction in information literacy instruction. Librarians at Champlain College piloted mobile phone polling in a first-year classroom as a less expensive and more versatile alternative to clickers. By utilizing a technology that virtually all students have in their pockets, librarians found that it increased engagement from previous iterations of the session. In addition, by asking poll questions about students’ experiences, librarians were able to facilitate in-depth inquiry into information literacy topics. This book begins with the premise that copyright exists to promote the dissemination of information, and while creators have certain rights, so do users. This new edition updates every chapter and adds a new chapter on the library as a publisher. Also included is information on recent developments such as Creative Common licenses and the use of digital video (e.g. YouTube) in the classroom.

In this article the author discusses the role of digital technologies in libraries in the U.S. She emphasizes the role of libraries as a resource for digital creation technologies, as many users do not have access to such technologies in their homes. Several libraries are highlighted, including the Fayetteville, New York Free Library, the Chicago, Illinois Public Library, and the Skokie, Illinois Public Library. Topics include digital media labs, 3-D printers, and software.

Bibliography of contemporary German literature volumes added the previous year to Washington University Libraries' Contemporary German Literature Collection. These acquisitions generally include novels, poetry, short story collections, essays, autobiographical works, and literary and cultural periodicals from publishers in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. This Collection serves as the research arm for the Department of Germanic Languages and Literature's Max Kade Center for Contemporary German Literature. This bibliography is compiled by Washington University's Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures in cooperation with the University Libraries. Making Online Instruction Count: Statistical Reporting Of Web-Based Library Instruction Activities, Tim Bottorff, Andrew Todd

Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Statistical reporting of library instruction (LI) activities has historically focused on measures relevant to face-to-face (F2F) settings. However, newer forms of LI conducted in the online realm may be difficult to count in traditional ways, leading to inaccurate reporting to both internal and external stakeholders. A thorough literature review is combined with the results of an investigative survey to reveal the current status of reporting such activities. The results reveal considerable confusion about the reporting of Web-based LI activities, even though a number of librarians are devoting significant amounts of time to this important and growing area of librarianship.

EScience is a research methodology combining data collection, storage and networking on a massive scale. By its very nature, eScience presents new and diverse opportunities in librarianship. While various academic institutions such as Cornell, Georgia Tech, and the University of Massachusetts are already engaged in well-established projects at their libraries, eScience is still relatively new to many others. Web discovery tools can change not only the way users search and retrieve information, but also, how libraries and librarians work with information. When the University of North Florida implemented web scale discovery tools, we discovered that the technical implementation was challenging, but the most difficult changes were related to the library culture. Our students were “early adopters” moving from over 26 different entry points to finding most library materials in one search. But our staff and faculty were more resistant to the change.

The need for curriculum materials collections/centers is evident with the study of the development of education practices in the United States. "Keeping-school" was viewed with such disdain that anyone without training was believed to be able to teach - "Any farmer can teach" (Bowen, 1887, p. 14). As education became more important to the growth of the nation and its citizens, teacher preparation changed from mimicking how one was taught to being viewed as a science and requiring its own laboratories similar to science and medical laboratories.

Objective: The research identified the skills, if any, that health preprofessional students wished to develop after receiving feedback on skill gaps as well as any strategies they intended to use to address these gaps.

Methods: A qualitative approach was used to elicit students’ reflections on building health information literacy skills. First, the students took the Research Readiness Self-Assessment instrument, which measured their health information literacy, and then they received individually tailored feedback about their scores and skill gaps. Second, students completed a post-assessment survey asking how they intended to close identified gaps in their skills on these. Three trained coders …

The Authors explore a new service that a handful of public libraries are offering their patrons -- multipurpose workshops for designing and creating objects. At the heart of these “makerspaces,” “fab labs,” or “hackerspaces” is a 3-D printer that creates an object based on a digital design by melting the plastic and extruding it to form the shape of the object it is printing. The Authors interviewed two library directors, Jeff Krull and Sue Considine, on their different approaches to implementing this innovative service.

Library Commons Project

The Study Group was constituted in March 2012 and charged with examining both library public services and library public spaces with the goals of developing a new service model and adapting existing library space to better serve library clientele’s needs. To those ends, the group has reviewed library use statistics, surveyed articles from the professional literature that review the experiences of other libraries, and made site visits to Florida State University and the University of Central Florida, both of which have recently developed knowledge or learning commons and reexamined their own service models.
