Reinvigorating The Library Tour: Enhancing Student Engagement Through Library Collections, Amy Thornley

By design, the library tour is a typically passive exercise, but what if the tour could become an exercise to engage students in the physical library collections? This presentation describes how Miami University introduced a series of activities designed to encourage student interaction with library materials as a part of the typical library tour. Introducing a tactile element to the tours increased both library circulation and student recall of the collection, and anecdotal evidence suggests that students are undertaking more individual exploration. Examples and tips for implementation will be provided.

When your instruction sessions seem to be on autopilot and your students' eyes begin to glaze over, telling a story can be an excellent way to reclaim their attention and capture that sought after, elusive goal: student buy-in.

More often than not, our instruction sessions are focused on a particular project or a discrete set of skills, and we fail to impart to students the BIG PICTURE of what we do. Stories can bridge the gap between the practical skills we teach and our larger goal -helping students become informed information seekers and users- by offering students context.

The presenter will give examples of how instructors use Clickers at Hunter College. She will also demonstrate how she successfully used Clickers in her Library 100 one-credit course. She will present research detailing how other colleges have used Clickers in the classroom and the effectiveness of active learning techniques. Despite the ever-growing range of media types, formats, and information-access options, students are often instructed to only use specific sources in their research. They are sometimes even given strict guidelines, prescribing how many of each they need to, or may, cite. It is important not to lead students to believe there is a formula for the ideal works cited for all research topics. The authors of this paper provide an overview of the activities of the Irish Working Group on Information Literacy (WGIL) and its role in advancing a national policy for information literacy in the Republic of Ireland. During a two year period commencing from June 2010 until the present, a suite of online reusable learning objects (RLOs) have been created at ITT Dublin library covering a range of information literacy competencies.

This poster will outline the development of RLOs at ITT Dublin and how these resources have been shared, reused and repurposed to enhance information literacy progression. The article will focus on best practices and lessons learned during the design, development, and implementation process including the pedagogical approach, application of the software and the collaborative working arrangements that the digital learning resources have helped to foster.

Archives and special collections experience pressure to digitize and make more of their holdings available online. Creating online digital collections is time consuming. Not only do the individual analog items need to be scanned, but descriptive metadata must be created for web searches and for historical context. According to the 2004 Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) survey, archives cite lack of staff time as one of the top two hindrances for undertaking digitization projects.1 Often, archives and special collections cannot hire additional professional staff to carry out digital projects. Materials with archival value are now predominantly "born digital." Archivists have unprecedented opportunities to acquire and preserve traces of human and associated machine activity. Seizing these opportunities will require archivists to extract digital materials from their storage or transfer media in ways that reflect the metadata and ensure the integrity of the materials. They must also support and mediate appropriate access: allowing users to make sense of materials and their context, while also preventing inadvertent disclosure of sensitive data.

Budgets are tight, yet it remains important for library staff members to keep current with evolving technologies and improve their skills in providing services to library users. Staff development programs can spark creativity, increase motivation, and augment productivity. In these lean times, Marcia Trotta provides guidance on how to maintain library staff development opportunities. Trotta is a consultant and adult program coordinator of the Connecticut Humanities Council. She is a retired public library director and has written a number of books on library management-related issues.

Thinking About Technology - Steve Jobs Was Right About Html5, But Was He Right About Digital Publishing?, Darla Jackson

Steve Jobs predicted that HTML5 would replace Adobe Flash, and in November 2011, Adobe announced it would cease developing its Flash Player plug-in for mobile browsers and encourage developers to adopt the HTML5 standard. Ms. Jackson discusses some of the features of HTML5 and suggests that as search engine optimization and usability on mobile devices become increasingly important, law librarians should consider how HTML5 features may prove useful in achieving the goals of the law library. Further, she discusses how HTML5 may also influence the development of legal digital publishing initiatives

This research examined the functions and roles of public library systems in New York State and the services they provide for individual libraries and the public. The dissertation further studied the service decision-making processes at three selected New York State cooperative public library systems. Public library systems have played an important role in enhancing and expanding library services in the United States since the 1940s, but few existing studies on public library systems focus on their organizational processes.

This paper reviews the literature of collection development and management from 2009 and 2010. Themes and trends reflect the profound effect of environmental forces on libraries, including the economic recession, changes in scholarly communication, and an increasingly networked environment. Libraries reduced print collections and moved them to storage or shared repositories and assessed collections to find efficiencies and demonstrate value. Research libraries moved away from collecting everything to mission-focused collecting, with an emphasis on unique collections. Collaboration across libraries, within institutions, and with non-library partners continued as a key management strategy. Nascent plans emerged to develop a national strategy for …

The Free Online Encyclopedia, as Wikipedia called, is a radical departure from traditional encyclopedias and traditional methods of knowledge creation. This chapter explores how a community of amateurs on Wikipedia has challenged our notions of expertise in the 21st century. It does so by first looking at the roots of Wikipedia in a phenomenon known as the “wisdom of the crowds” and in the open source software movement. The reliability of Wikipedia is examined as are the claims of major critics of the project. Throughout, epistemological questions raised by Wikipedia are addressed.

Health Numeracy Confidence Among Racial/ Ethnic Minorities In Hints 2007: Sociodemographic, Attitudinal, And Knowledge Correlates, Hong Huang, Yiu Ming Chan, Dong Feng

Health numeracy skills help people interpret health risks, and make effective medical decisions. Lower health numeracy confidence was observed for blacks and Hispanic groups than whites. Little is known about the important factors that explain racial differences in health numeracy confidence. For this study, we used a nationally representative, cross-sectional data sample of 4,610 U.S. adults from the National Cancer Institute’s 2007 Health Information National Trends Survey. Bivariate (Chi-squares) and multiple logistic regression analyses were conducted to identify the contribution factors that predict health numeracy confidence. The article focuses on how school librarians could lead change in their schools. It states that some people do not want change because it is considered as a threat to familiar behavior. It says that in introducing change there should be a sense of urgency, a group that has the power to lead the change, communicate the vision of change. It adds that school librarians must consider all aspects including the involvement of principals, school staff, and the community.
